On Mothers Day in 1909, Sonora Dodd went to church. The nation had just observed its first
Mothers Day and the minister spoke at length about mothers and their virtues, but said not a word
about Dads. Mrs. Dodd, who was raised by her father after her moms death, was inspired to create
a day similar to Mothers Day for all fathers. She reflected on her fathers sacrifices in raising six
children alone, then wrote a letter to the Ministerial Association in her city of Spokane, WA,
proposing a day to honor all Dads. She suggested a day in June because her dads birthday was in
that month. The Association liked the idea and scheduled the celebration for the third Sunday of
June in 1910. The idea gathered fire and by 1916, Pres. Wilson proclaimed the day nationally! Mrs.
Dodd died in 1978 at age 96. Shes THE ONE who somehow caused thousands of dads to attend
church on that day, which probably led to many of them becoming regular Christians. Children
watch what parents DO, not so much of what they SAY. A Christ-centered dad will usually have
children who will follow him to church without urging. Observe what ONE PERSON did, in this
case, Mrs. Sonora Dodd. Happy Fathers Day!

Sometime during this week, Father Floyd McKinney will arrive at St. Michaels rectory at Girard
with all that he owns and establish himself as the new pastor there. Later, he will come to St.
Josephs at Arma and look over the Church and rectory as he assumes responsibility for his mission
Church. He has been serving as parochial administrator at Sacred Heart Church, Pratt, and
sacramental minister at St. John Church at St. John, Ks. From the map, it appears that Pratt is
about halfway between Wichita and Dodge City with a population similar to Fort Scott, while St.
John, KS is approximately 25 miles directly north of Pratt, a town similar in size to Arma . Our two
parishes have been without a priest since Fr. Max Biltz left for health reasons in mid-February.
Weve not had weekday masses or adoration during this time, only our regular weekend Masses
handled by visiting area priests such as Fathers McElwee, Yoakam, Lanzrath, Malone, and others.
Those who were able to attend the Thursday morning Rosary Group, initiated by Judy Smerchek,
appreciated the opportunity to pray together during this time.
Both parishes seemed elated to learn that Bishop Kemme had appointed Fr.McKinney to begin
around June 21. He was ordained a priest in 1980, so it is safe to say that he knows his way
around. In fact, I became acquainted with him in the nineties when I was at St.Marys-Colgan
High School and he was an assistant pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes. He was a missionary priest in
Venezuela during most of the eighties, so he brings a wealth of experience to us from both foreign
and domestic service. He will also devote time to the Hispanic Ministry in Pittsburg. As to Fr. Max,
I received a letter last week from Fr. John Lanzrath, who is the Vicar for Priests of our diocese, and
he said that hes been in touch with our former priest by phone each week, but recently, he visited
with him in person and asked me to tell parishioners to please persist in your prayers for him as he
continues in his healing journey. Lets remember to pray for Fr. Max to return to good health.
At any rate, Fr. McKinney, were very pleased to have a priest once again and we welcome you to
St. Michaels and St. Josephs.
