Monday we celebrate Labor Day...It honors the American labor

movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength,
prosperity, and well-being of the country. In 'our neck of the woods' we also
celebrate Little Balkans Days this weekend. As I went thru the little museum
south of Arma this week I learned a little more about the people who came to
work in the coal mines. A lot of them were from the Balkan countries,
therefore the name. My connection to the front of this bulletin is the fact that
these people, not just the men, had faith that there was something here to
improve their lives.
One part of faith is trusting in something outside of ourselves or trusting
that we can do what we have not done before. Faith is believing in what we can
not see. The people who came here from the Balkan countries were looking for
something that they did not have in their own home. It was not easy to leave
all they knew and come to a place they had never seen before. With a strong
will and determination they made a new life here in this part of the world.
Making a trip across the ocean was easier said than done.
Something similar can be said about our faith. It is easy to speak about
what we believe, but when it comes to living those beliefs we have to act upon
what we say. An example from the disciples of Jesus is when they see him feed
the multitude. First Jesus starts preaching and then asks the disciples to feed
the crowd. They respond by asking where they might find food for all the
people. They had faith in Jesus or they would not have been following him;
then when he asks them to show their faith, they seem to falter. We may not
have the faith to leave the comforts of home to move thousands of miles across
an ocean. We do have faith that Jesus is present in the Eucharist; because of
that faith we are called to do many things for the good of those around us,
making our faith visible to others.
