Sulphuric Acid
Sulphuric acid, H2SO4, is uses to make fertilizer, the electrolyte in car batteries, paint and
detergent. Sulphuric acid, H2SO4, is made in industry through the Contact process. The
burning of fossil fuels such as petrol and products made from sulphuric acid, H 2SO4, will
sulphur dioxide, SO2, which pollutes the environment. The sulphur dioxide gas, SO2 released
from industrial activities can cause acid rain. Acid rain cause environment pollution.
Alloys
An alloy is a compound formed by mixing metals with other elements. The process of mixing
atoms of pure metals and atoms of impurities such as metals or non-metals by melting is
called alloying. Alloying aim to:
The orderly arrangement of atoms of the same size in metals makes metals malleable and
ductile. An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements in which the major component is a
metal. Alloys are stronger, harder, do not corrode easily and more luster than pure metals.
Synthetic Polymers
A polymer is a long-chained molecule made from the combination of many small molecules
(monomers). Polymerisation is the process of combining monomers to form a long chained
polymer. A natural polymer is a polymer that occurs naturally, such as starch and cellulose.
A synthetic (artificial) polymer that is a man-made polymer that is formed from chemical
compounds through polymerisation. . Plastic, synthetic fibers and synthetic rubber are
examples of synthetic polymers.
Glass and Ceramics
The main component of glass is silica or silicone dioxide, SiO2. Glass is brittle, hard,
transparent and chemically inert. Types of glass include fused silica glass, borosilicate glass
and lead crystal glass. Ceramics are items made from clay that have been heated at high
temperature. The main properties of ceramics include being brittle, a good insulator of heat
and electricity, very hard, having a very high melting point and being heat resistance.
Composite Materials
Composite materials are compounds that are formed from combinations of two or more
different compound. Examples of composite materials are reinforced concrete, composite
plastics, fiber optics and photo chromic glass.
