Narrative
Basic Plot
A man is going about his everyday life. He
sees a girl who he falls in love with and goes
on a mission to marry her. He is faced by
many complications along the way, including
an angry policeman, but in the end he gets
the girl and lives happily ever after.

Third person narrative

We watch the narrative as an outsider rather

than through the characters eyes. This allows
the audience to be omniscient as we are able
to see other things which the characters are
unaware of.

Todorov

Todorov came up with the theory that all

media texts have a specific structure made
up of Equilibrium, Disruption and Re-
equilibrium.

Equilibrium  Man going about his everyday

life.
Disruption  Falls in love with a girl.
Re-equilibrium  Marries girl, lives happily
ever after.

Propp
Hero – The man with the moustache  – His
mission is to marry the girl.
Villain – The policeman- tries to stop the man
achieving his mission to get the girl.
Princess – The girl – she is the hero’s reward
for completing the mission.

Levi strauss – binary

Opposites

Throughout the video there are many

conflicts such as:-
Good vs. Evil
Love vs. poverty
Policeman vs. moustache man

Barthes

Throughout the video enigmas are raised

such as:-
Will he get the girl?
Will the policeman catch him?
This keeps the audience involved and
interested as they want to know what
happens in the end.

Narrative devices

Throughout the video, narrative devices are

used to help convey the storyline to an
audience.
We are shown:-

A flash forward – of him marrying the girl to

tell the audience he has fallen in love with
her, giving the audience greater knowledge
of the character.

Captions – such as where the piano player is

fired. This is done to represent speech so
that the audience understands the previous
scene and is done in homage to the old silent
movies, which had music throughout, but no
dialogue and used captions instead to
represent someone speaking.
