FLUID FLYWHEEL
 THE CLUTCH USED IN AUTOMOTIVE POWER TRAINS WITH
MANUALLY SHIFTED TRANSMISSION IS A MECHANICAL
COUPLING.

 WHEN ENGAGED, IT COUPLES THE ENGINE TO THE


TRANSMISSION. THE FLUID COUPLING IS A HYDRAULIC
COUPLING IT ALWAYS “ENGAGED”, BUT SINCE THE COUPLING
IS PRODUCED BY A FLUID, THE DRIVEN MEMBER CAN SLIP OR
TURN SLOWER THAN, THE DRIVING MEMBER.

 THE FIRST FULLY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM TO


INCORPORATE A FLUID COUPLING WAS THE AMERICAN GEN
MOTORS HYDROMANTIC G/BOX , WHICH WAS INTRODUCED IN
THEIR 1939 OLDSMOBILE CAR.

OPERATION OF FLUID FLYWHEEL


 IT IS SEEN THAT FOR ENGINE SPEEDS BELOW ABOUT
500 RPM (FIXED BY THE DESIGNER) , PERCENTAGE SLIP
IS 100 WHICH MEANS CLUTCH IS FULLY DISENGAGED.
 AS THE ENGINE SPEED INCREASES FURTHER TO
ABOUT 1000 RPM, THE PERCENTAGE SLIP FALLS
RAPIDLY TO ABOUT 10, BEYOND WHICH THE SLIP
DECREASED GRADUALLY TO A SMALL VALVE ABOUT 2
PERCENT AT ABOUT 3000 RPM.

 . AS PERCENTAGE SLIP REPRESENTS DEFINITE LOSS


OF ENERGY AND CONSEQUENTLY INCREASED FUEL
CONSUMPTION, THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE
ALLOWED TO RUN AT A SPEED BETWEEN APPROX 500
AND 1000 RPM.

 THIS CONDITION IS SIMILAR TO A SLIPPING CLUTCH IN


CASE OF ORDINARY FRICTION CLUTCHES.

 THE SIMPLE FLUID COUPLING JUST DESCRIBED WOULD


NOT BE VERY EFFICIENT UNDER MANY CONDITIONS
BECAUSE OF THE TURBULENCE THAT WOULD SET UP
IN THE OIL.

 . WHEN THERE IS CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE IN
SPEED BETWEEN THE DRIVING AND DRIVEN MEMBERS,
THE OIL WOULD BE STRIKING THE VANES OF DRIVEN
MEMBERS WITH GREAT FORCE.

 DUE TO THIS THE OIL SWIRL ABOUT IN ALL


DIRECTIONS.

 TO REDUCE THIS TURBULENCE AND THERE BY MAKE


THE COUPLING MORE EFFICIENT , FLUID COUPLINGS
USE A SPLIT GUIDE RING CANTERED IN THE MEMBERS.
