2011 Dollars for Scholars Program


$4,000 Scholarship will be Awarded
West Virginia Federal Credit Union is offering a scholarship to help prepare students
for future challenges. A $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior
seeking a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. The
student may be eligible to receive funding of $1,000 per year for a maximum of four
years as long as the student meets the minimum renewal eligibility requirements.
Please read carefully.

Eligibility

1.  The $4,000 scholarship is open to any high school student classified as a senior, with a projected graduation
date of 2011, and who plans to attend an accredited undergraduate college seeking a baccalaureate degree as a
full time student. The student must complete and earn at least 30 credit hours per academic year (two semesters:
Septempber - May), not to include summer classes.

2.  A student must graduate from high school with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (grade point average) or
whatever is locally considered a “B” average (weighted grades may be used). Verification required. Please
provide copy of transcript.

3. A student must attain an ACT composite score of 21 with a minimum sub-score of 20 in each of the four
subject areas (Math, Science, English and Reading); or a combined SAT score of 980 with at least a minimum
sub-score of 490 in the critical reading section and 480 in the math section. Scores cannot be combined from
multiple test administrations. The highest scores will be accepted from one single test date. Verification
required. Please provide copy of official document.
4.  Entrants must have an account established in their own name (primary member) and be a member in good
standing at West Virginia Federal Credit Union. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, attends school
or worships in Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Putnam, or Wayne counties. This account must be established
before the scholarship deadline on Friday, April 1, 2011.

5.  West Virginia Federal Credit Union staff and directors and their immediate relatives are not eligible.

6. No repeat winners.

Entry Requirements

Please read carefully. The scholarship requires the completion of an essay, resume and entry form as outlined
below. All entries are reviewed prior to judging, and those that do not adhere to the rules are not judged.

  Essay

1. Entrants will be required to write one essay composed of 1,200 - 1,500 words on the following topic:
  What in your academic career has engaged your imagination the most?
2. The essay must be computer generated, double-spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 inch document and follow the general
APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines. The essay must be the original work of the entrant. The
essay must be drafted as a Microsoft Word Document and submitted on-line via our www.wvfcu.org web site or
saved to CD for submission. Please be sure to include your name on your essay.

  Resume

1.  Entrants are also required to submit a business-style resume, computer generated as a 8 1/2 x 11 inch
document. The resume must be the original work of the entrant. The resume must be submitted as a Microsoft
Word Document and submitted on-line via our www.wvfcu.org web site or saved to CD for submission. The
resume should not exceed two pages in length, and at a minimum should contain the following information in
chronological order:
•  Entrant’s full name
•  Address
•  Phone Number
•  High School Address & Phone Number
•  Educational Information
•  High School subjects emphasized
•  Cumulative GPA (verification required)
•  ACT/SAT scores (verification required)
•  Honors & Awards
•  School Involvement (with emphasis on leadership roles and years of participation)
•  Community Involvement (with emphasis on leadership roles and years of participation)
•  Work Experience
•  Future Educational Plans

  Entry Form

Entrants must complete and sign an official entry form. You may access this entry form at www.wvfcu.org.
Type your name and date after reading the agreement and “click” Submit. Along with submitting the entry form
please attach your resume and essay as a Microsoft Word document in an email to anna.campbell@wvfcu.org
or mail CD to: WVFCU, attention: Anna Campbell, 318 Fifth Avenue, South Charleston, WV 25303. Please be
sure to include your name on your essay. All entries must be received or postmarked by Friday, April 1, 2011.

Judging

1. Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges selected by WVFCU Board of Directors.

2. Each judge will award a maximum of 65 points to the essay and a maximum of 35 points to the resume.
Judges will base their scores for the essay on originality, clarity, meaningful content, an accurate presentation
of facts, spelling, neatness, and grammar/punctuation. The resume will be judged on presentation, school and/
or community involvement, academic merits, leadership roles and potential of the student to be successful in
college. Entries will also be judged on adherence to contest rules.

3. All entries must be received or postmarked by Friday, April 1, 2011.

4. Results will be tabulated by our panel of judges. All decisions are final. Winners will be announced in May
2011.

5. All scholarship entries become the exclusive property of WVFCU and will not be returned.
Administrative / Award Procedures

1. The scholarship recipient is expected to enroll as a full-time student (15 credit hours) in a college or
university the semester following high school graduation or forfeit the scholarship award in the absence of
extenuating circumstances.

2. The 4-Year college or university must be approved for the guaranteed student loan program.

3.  The first $1,000 distribution of scholarship funds will be forwarded when written verification is received
from the college registrar that the student is enrolled as a full time student by mid-term of first semester. At that
time, a check will be made payable to both the winner and the college or university and mailed to the winner.
In the future, distributions in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded prior to the beginning of the next three
consecutive academic years. Thus, the cumulative scholarship will amount to $4,000.

4. Funds are to be used only for tuition, fees, textbooks, computer needs, and educational supply expenses.

Renewal Requirements

  Academic Requirements:

WVFCU scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA throughout their collegiate
career. However, first year students can retain the scholarship if they receive a cumulative 2.75 their first
semester, but every semester thereafter students must meet the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA requirement.
The student must complete and earn at least 30 credit hours per academic year (two semesters: September -
May), not to include summer classes.

  Scholarship Disbursement

Each student is responsible for keeping track of his/her academic progress and eligibility status. It is the
responsibility of the student to provide evidence of enrollment status and fulfillment of credit hour requirements
along with copies of official transcripts each semester. These items should be presented to Anna Campbell at
West Virginia Federal Credit Union prior to the beginning of the academic year. Contact information is as

Leaves of Absence or Deferrals

Requests for leaves of absence or deferrals must be addressed in writing to the contact and address mentioned
above. The Dollars for Scholars committee will take the following under consideration: medical leave, family
medical or bereavement leave, military leave, or other unforeseen circumstances. It is the sole discretion of the
Dollars for Scholars committee to determine if the leave of absence or deferral will be granted.
Authority of West Virginia Federal Credit Union

WVFCU has the ultimate authority to amend any of the above rules to ensure fairness in the award of the
scholarships. Any questions regarding the scholarship should be addressed in writing to the address mentioned
above.
