Non Isothermal Reactor Design by Matlab Assignment

The document provides instructions for a Matlab simulation assignment on non-isothermal reactor design. Students are asked to: 1) Identify and fix errors in provided Matlab code files for a water-gas shift reaction simulation. 2) Answer questions about the simulation and how it models reaction equilibrium, heat effects, pressure drop, and more. 3) Investigate the impacts of design parameters like temperature, pressure, concentration and catalyst properties on CO conversion, comparing results to theory and other software.

Non-Isothermal Reactor Design by Matlab

Using the Matlab files provided (wgs1main.m, wgs1func.m, wgsplot.m):

1) To test your understanding on how the governing equations are formulated in Matlab, the source codes
purposely contain several errors that must be fixed before the codes can produce correct results. Please
identify these errors and fix them.

2) Please answer the following questions:

a. How do we check whether the reaction has reached equilibrium?

b. Is the heat of reaction assumed to be independent of the temperature?
c. How does the pressure drop affect the reaction conversion?
d. If instead of specifying the wall temperature for heat transfer, the heat duty is to be specified, how
do we make this modification in the program?
e. How should the differential equations be modified if the conversion as a function of the reactor
length, instead of catalyst weight, is needed?
f. How should the program be modified if cold/hot shots are to be simulated? Please provide a sample
run with either hot/cold shots

3) Please investigate the impacts of the following design parameters on the CO conversion and CO
reactor outlet concentration. Briefly discuss the discrepancy, if any, between the simulation results
from (1) Matlab and (2) theoretical predictions, as well as from (3) HYSYS.

a. Inlet and wall temperatures

b. Inlet pressure
c. Concentration (i.e. excess reactant, inert addition)
d. Catalyst particle density, size, and bed voidage
