The OptiX PTN 3900 and PTN 1900 are a new generation metropolitan optical transport equipment, which is developed
by Huawei for packet transport.
z As emerging data services are widely applied, operators require increasing bandwidth of the transport network and
demand more flexibility of scheduling bandwidth. As a circuit-switching network, the traditional SDH-based
multiservice transport network is inapplicable to the data services that feature burst and flexibility. In addition, the
traditional connectionless-oriented IP network should not be used as a telecommunication carrier network because it
cannot strictly ensure the quality and performance of important services.
z With the pseudo wire emulation edge-to-edge (PWE3) technology, the multi-protocol label switch (MPLS) technology,
as well as ideal operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) and protection switching mechanism, the OptiX
PTN 3900 and PTN 1900 are able to provide services of carrier-class quality in a packet transport network.

z The OptiX PTN 3900 and PTN1900 is applied at the convergence layer and the backbone layer of a metropolitan
transport network.
z The OptiX PTN 3900 is mainly used in a metropolitan packet convergence network. It transports packet services in
the network, and converges the services to an IP/MPLS backbone network.
z The OptiX PTN 1900 is mainly used in a metropolitan packet access network. It accesses L2VPN, CES, and ATM
services from the client side to a packet transport network.

z The OptiX PTN 912 is directly placed on the wireless base station side. It converts services output from the base
station and then sends the services to the convergence node. The Figure shows typical networking of the OptiX PTN
912. The OptiX PTN 912 accesses services from the base station side through TDM E1, IMA E1 or FE interfaces.
The OptiX PTN equipment adopts ML-PPP E1 or FE interfaces for networking.

z The OptiX PTN3900 and PTN 1900 supports various networking modes to apply to different scenarios. These figures
show the typical backhaul networking modes of the PTN equipment for mobile communication.
The OptiX PTN 3900 & PTN 1900 supports the following interfaces for networking.
z GE
z POS STM-4
z POS STM-1
z ML-PPP
NOTE:
z It is recommended that the ML-PPP should be used to form the chain network.
z The FE interface can be used as networking interface, but the FE interface is not recommended to be used as
networking interface.

The figure shows a typical scenario where the offload solution is applied. Node B connects to the OptiX PTN 1900
through the ATM IMA interface. The IMA E1 module of the OptiX PTN 1900 accesses the services and distinguishes
various service flows according to the VPI/VCI values carried by the packets.
z In the case of the HSDPA service flow, the OptiX PTN 1900 emulates the ATM PWE3 for the service flow on the
access side and then encapsulates the emulated service into the tunnel as required by the WMS network. Finally, the
OptiX PTN 1900 transports the service to the ADSL modem through the FE interface. When the encapsulated
service enters the ADSL network, the service is transported to the OptiX PTN 3900. Then, the OptiX PTN 3900
decapsulates the service and transports the service to the radio network controller (RNC).
z The OptiX PTN 1900 at the access station transports the signaling flow and R99 service flow in the form of IMA E1 to
the OptiX PTN 3900 at the convergence station.

z PTN912 supports the offload solution to divide and carry the flow of base station services such as the high speed
downlink packet access (HSDPA) services and R99 services, and uses the xDSL board to transmit the HSDPA
services through an interconnected leased network, to reduce the transmission cost.
z When the Offload solution is adopted, the OptiX PTN 912 is connected to the x digital subscriber line (xDSL) network
through the xDSL interfaces to transmit the HSDPA services to the convergence nodes over the xDSL network. The
OptiX PTN 3900/1900 on the base station controller (BSC) or radio network controller (RNC) side converges the
services and then sends the services to the BSC or RNC.

Circuit emulation service (CES) is realized by encapsulating the TDM service data based on special circuit emulation
packet headers. In this way, a special packet header carries the frame format, alarm, signaling, synchronization, and
timing information of a TDM service flow. The encapsulated packet is called PW packet. The MPLS protocol carries
PW packets, which travel through the corresponding packet transport network (PTN) and then are decapsulated
when arriving at the PW egress. Finally, a TDM circuit switching service flow is re-created.
Application Mode
The CES service allows a metropolitan Ethernet network (MEN) carrier to provide TDM services to customers that have
only the TDM equipment. This enlarges the service range and the number of users of the MEN carriers, and provides
a way to transform the traditional circuit network to the wideband data network.
The CES service mainly applies to the wireless service and the enterprise private line service. The application scenarios
include UNI-NNI and UNI-UNI, as shown in this figure.
z UNI-NNI CES service: The PTN equipment accesses the TDM services of customers by using the TDM or channel
STM interface. The CES PW can be created between the PTN equipment to emulate the end-to-end TDM service.
To customers, the CES services are similar to actual TDM services.
z UNI-UNI CES service: The PTN equipment accesses the TDM services by using a single point.
NOTE:
z Only the point-to-point service is supported. That is, the service of one E1 interface mapping to one PW is supported.
But converged services of several TDM interfaces mapping to one PW are not supported.
ATM Service

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is a technology used to transport packets in cells with ensured QoS. ATM meets the
requirements of real-time services and non-real-time services. The PTN equipment supports using the PWE3
technology to emulate ATM services. That is, the PTN equipment accesses the ATM services on the source node,
encapsulates ATM cells in PW to transmit them to the sink node, and then decapsulates the ATM cells. In this way,
the ATM services are emulated.
ATM emulation services mainly apply to wireless services. The application scenarios include UNIs-NNI and UNI-UNI, as
shown in the figure.
z UNIs-NNI ATM service: The PTN equipment accesses the ATM services of customers by using the IMA link or STM
link respectively. You can create the ATM PW between the PTN equipment to emulate end-to-end ATM services. At
the source end, the ATM cells are encapsulated in the PW. Then, data packets are transparently transmitted in the
MPLS network. At the sink end, the ATM services are decapsulated and forwarded to the connected customer
network. To customers, the UNIs-NNI ATM services are similar to actual ATM services.
z UNI-UNI ATM services: The PTN equipment switches and transmits the ATM services at a single point.

The ATM UNIs-NNI emulation service supports the convergence of multiple ATM
connections into a PW for transmission. As shown in the figure three ATM
connections are encapsulated into a PW.
