What is Ukay-Ukay?
•“Ukay-ukay” is a Visayan term that translates to “sift
through” or “dig up.”

•Ukay-ukay is most commonly used to refer to the


industry that caters to the sale of secondhand imported
garments.

•It originated in Baguio City, where it has been


typically called wagwagan, and was later adapted in
other places. The industry first began with stalls at the
sidewalks.

•Ukay-ukay may be considered a "special" type of good available in
the market.

•Wagwag or Ukay-Ukay items usually originate from Hong Kong,


United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Northwestern Europe.

•Ukay-ukay clothing is packed in box sizes similar to those standard


pasalubong boxes. Box sizes, though, differ by size and clothing
quality.

•The regular box has a cubic dimension of one meter on each side,
while the jumbo box is about 0.25 meters to 0.5 meters bigger than the
regular-size box.

Pricing
• “New arrival” or new arrival garments are definitely more
expensive than the old ones.
• Branded items are more expensive than other items but
relatively 60%-80% cheaper than new branded items sold
at malls.
• As weeks go by, the unsold items get discounted at 20-
50%.
• As time passes and as new arrival garments are delivered,
the price of the garments will fall and becomes 3 for 100
and become cheaper during “sale” (end of season sale,
Christmas season sale, etc.)

• Arrivals of ukay-ukay garments usually have an
interval of 2-3months.
