When 'he maximum ambient :'?:nper,,!ure ex~eeds these limit~, forced vantilatlon should be used.
The liIament of the iT-17 should be operated on alernatinq current at the rated value 01 2.5 volts. The sod.at should make good contact to the tube pinll and adequate current-<:arrying capacity I.."ds to the secondary windinq of the power translonIler should be used. Opera· tion of the filament a\ less t""o the rated voltage msy re~ult In a hiqh tnternel voltage drol=' with subsequent loss 01 emissicn. A lila:nent voltmeter should be conne<:.1ed permanently across the fil4mant circuit al the socket terminals In order that the illaJ!1ent voltage can be maintained at 2.5 volta.
Because the mercury ruilY ~ splashed on the tube elements due to shipment or handlinq, the filament of the IT·17 should be operated. at rated volt(l.ge for approximately 3 minutes without plate vo!Lsqa In order to distribute the mercury ~roperly when the lUbe 13 first placed In service. The above procedure need not be l"9I'Hted unlees the tu~ is removed from the soc:ket and during hsndJinq the mercury becomes spluhed on the tube elements.
The condensed marcur y temperature should bo at least Z5° C btefom the pl .. te voltage is ilI'pli"d. This may be crdlnerily eecomplished by introducing a time laq of at least 30 seconds between the apl='licsliOll of lhr filamEnt and the plate voltages. In event that arcbad: should occur when the plate voltage Is applied, the pre-heaUnq time of the filament should be increased,
When the TT·17 is subiec-ed during operation 10 external hiqh volt",ga or high frequency field". shielding and R·F IUter circuits should be prO¥ided.

The slnqle-phese half-wave circuit of Fiqure l :5 ~,G~ v et ; popular due 10 the fac\ Ihat ~he ripple is of gr~"I"r mecru:ude and beir<q of Icwer frsquency than ather systems IS more difficult to filler. With c:hake input, the DC voltage will be approximately .45 Ih~,t of Ihe r.m.s. 'ia::~ge E. figure 2 illustrates the full-wave single·phase crrcu.: whicn every am"teur is familiar wilh. Figure 3 is kienucal in nature with Figure 2, except '.hat four tubes (mere If desired) are used to obtain higher current output, Tho? r~sistcrs shown in Ihe plate circu.is or these tubes are very 9ssen:la;. otherwise one tube Will generally fake most at the load
· ..... ;:h the natural result 'ho'- tho? tube :ife is gred!ly :ie:::"~sed; ~ drop of about six volts across these resisters will insure stability. Figure 4 shows a bridge circuit wHh feur tubes,
its advantage is that high DC voltages can be secured
without expensive (high peak inverse vol:gge) tuoes and with low voltage transformers. For full-wave rectification l::e DC v~l:age can be increas"d by using the entire secondary OL:.·~'~t of the plate .rensiormer, in Iact, the volteqe will be exactly io:.r;::I.ed; or course, this halves the current output due to the transtcrmor current carrying limitations. figures 5 and 6 are similar to that of figure 2, except tha t they apply to three- phase circuits. In the circuit of FI<JUre 5. each tube carries current for one-third cycle. The circuit 01 Figure 6 is very commonly employed in high power transmitters wl,ere three-phase power is a.vllilable due to the high DC output volt4ge attained. This circuit has the added advantage that the ripple frequency is high. being six times the supply frequency, allowing simple filtering.

A heevy-duty resistor should be connected across rhs output of a fil'e~ in crder !~ draw scme lead current at ali ~(mes. Tbs resistor avoids soaring at no load when swingic:g cb.~k2 input is used and also provides a means for discharging Ir.a h::er condensers when no external vacuum-tube circuit load is connected to the filler. This bleooer resister should normally crew approximately 10 per cent of the full load current. The above table gives suitable values of bleeder resistors for power supply cysterns with from sao to 3000 volts output.

GENERAL PlJRPOSE TRIODE 40 WATTS PLATE DISSIPATION The Wonder Tubes
$3.50
260 WATTS Safety Factor
In six yeaH over 200,000 T·40's and 1'2-40's were put into operauon in Amllteur lind Commercial Transmitters in nearly everl country in the world. They are widely "sed by to"!e British qovfll1lment These Wonder Tubes are the mcst popular medium power Transmitting T-ubes ever devel-
oped and they unquestionably set 4 new lind higher standard of "WlltllI per Dollar" in this field. Prior to the advent of the 7·40 and TZ-40, the only comparative tube sold for $10,00, which is further proof thll! Taylor Tubes Is solely responsible for tcdav's outstanding values in Trensmitttnq Tubes.
T-40's and 1'240'8 offer you Processed Carbon Anodes 'egelner with =omplete Y.Jlycder:uID gnds, maktnq possible the Salest Tube In their class in their ability to withstand serious temporary cverloeds, The Scientifically designed Thoriated Tungsten filaments insure longUfe and maximum emi&eion.
TECHNICAL DATA
While the rated plate dissipation 01 the 1·40 and TZ-40 is 40 watts no COlOf shows on the plate until the disstpetron amounts to appro:ti· mdtely 60 WllttS and it takes about 90 wlltlS to cause a red spo! tn the center 01 the plate. In this CdtaiOg it will be noticed that the 1'2-40 MS been recommended as lin R.F. AmpJifier. The reason 15 th~t due ot the Zero Bias charectertstics the plate current will drop to 4 low value when e~citalion ceases such 49 tn keying of a precedIng stage. This elimindtes the necessity of 4 fixed source of bias as would be required by d T·40 under similar ccndlticns. Comparing the T·40 and TZ-40 we note !hllt the T'40 Is euler to drl'Ve !han the TZ--tO. However, in most cases the small addillonal dri'Vinq power requu-ed by !he TZ-40 is less objectionable than the fi~ed source of bias !hat must be ueed with the T-40.

$13.50
TAYLOR T·124
identical specifications and characteristics as the T·125 except the amp. factor is 48.
The Tl25 Is the tube amateurs demanded to fill the gap between the 155 and T200. It's a mansized tube at low cost end it t..tun •• lUI ... TATtOR ln1'enllon (paieDI IIppUed for) making possible high efUcien<=}' at low plate vol1ages and with low inter-electrode capacities. Rated conservetively, one tube will handle a full 500 watts Input at the
maximum ratings of 2000 volts, 250MA. The Intere:ectrode
capacities are lew. making possible efficient operation on
even the highest amateur frequencies-but the use of IIceel.
arabI) BDs Increases the Inherent efficien<=y of the tube, .1dnQ tt far more efficient than others with comparative Interelectrode capacities. These fins projecting Inward toward Ibe grid and filament effectively produce the very desirable characteristics of higher C tubes without greatly increasing the capacilles. Thus ibis tube is truly unique In that it possesses the IId1'Gl&qH of • low C tube Iogathar with the ad1'Gtil"'. of II hi9har C lube--wlthout the disadvantages of either. It Is truly II remarkable tube and Is a revolutionary step forward In tube design.
At the rated plate dissipation of 125 walts the carbon plate shows no color but the accelerating fins operate at a bright orar.ge color. rf the type of operation or Input are Dot such as to result In excessive disslpeticn. color showing on the plate may be tai::en as a definite indication that the circuit is lees elflclent than 1t should be.
For some time there has been a need (or a high frequency lube to replace tubes of the 203A type wlth the absolute minimum of changes In the transmitter. The Tl25 fills the needs In a mas I satisfactory manner. Because of the exclusive TAYLOR Accelerating Fins construC1icn, efliclencies on the order of those obtained wilh 03A's are possible at the same plate voltages and with the same low grid drive require' merits, In addition the plate dissipaHon Is greater than thai of an 03A and the plate current rating greater mal::.lng It possible 10 Increase the power at the same Plate voltage as well as gaining the advantages of low C tube operation at the higher frequencies. In order 10 replace an 03A type of tube with the Tl25 it will be necessary only to change the grid and plate connections and to re-neutrellze. If the minimum capacity of the neutralizing condenser is too high, plates may be reo moved. No circuit or bias changes are necessary because the Mu of thll T125 Is the same as thaI of an 03A.

TRIODE
521.50
57.5 WATT FILAMENT
The T·200 has often been 1211ed 'The AllUIteur's Power House Tube." A pair of these tubes push-pull will loaf along at I kw input on any frequency from 30 to 1.7MC. This tube '~ses the efficient flat form of construction and the Interelectrode capeclties represent the best possible combination of inter-electrode capacities and other characteristics for besl efficiency at moderate plate voltages with minimum gTid drive requirements. The inter·electrode capacities are low enough for ease of neutralization yet are not so low that the characteristics of the tube are advenely affected. Many
amateurs prefer a tube thai will delIver good efficiency at
Il.Igh current and relatively low plate voltage and the T·200
Is the answer. A plate modulated Input of 450 walts with only 18 watts drive at 1500 volts Is just what many have been thinking about and we recommend the r·200 hlghly under these conditions. A large percentage of high-powered transmitters on 75 and 160 meters use r·200's with qreal IUcceSS.
The 1200 Is widely used in Diathermy equipment. This type of service Is particularly hard on Tubes and the general acoeptance of the T200 by many 19l1ding manufacturers of Diathermy equipment is convincing proof of the 1'200's rugged construction and conservative rating. Do not confuse the T200 wuh smaller tubes bearing the same type number.
T·200 POPULARITY
Some of the leading Diathermy and Induction Heating apparalus· manufacturers use the Taylor T-200. Long, trouble-free operation is the [actor that makes tbe Taylor T-200 the standard of comparison in its class,

The B05 is e. high mu zero bias tube 01 popular type lDcorpc:lrating the use of the famous heat Iated, Speer processed carbon anodes together with the Taylor Floe.tlnq anode type of construction, The plate lead is broughl out the top qreatly minimizing the chanees of voltaqe break· downs.
The no·slgnal or static plate current Is about 55MA per tube al 1250 volts (zero bias) and about 30MA per tube al 1500 voIla when 15 bias valls are lidded. Because the B05 111 a zero bias tube. or practically so. grid current flows during nearly all of the input cycle. Due 10 this. the input transformer de~ requirements are Ie.. in· volved and excellent frequency response with minimum distortion .. eallily realized. The maximum average grid driving power is· appro:d· Inately a walla. Low impedance triodes such as 2A3's or 6A3's should be used In the driver stage.

IMPORTANT INFORMAnON
TEStlKG 1'UIEII As many of Ibe tubes returned 10 us as defective test oul OJ:: her. we want 10 make some II19Qelliona thaI will enable every user to qive doubtful lubes a partial elllission test in his own transmitter. Most users have or can easily obtain a 6.3 volt or 10 volt transformer. In lb. cue of testinQ II lUbe which !wi II 7.5 WIlt fIlamenl. replace !he 7.5 'fOIl tranafanner with a 6.3 volt transformer. Then, without making any olbm chanqes. note Ibe readinqa of the mete ... in lb. qrid and plate circuits of the tube being lested. There should be only a aUght drop In the plale Cl.lJ'NnI while th. grid cumlnt may drop 10 J,o!z its former VIIlue and the tube would still be satisfactory condition. Should the grid current drop in exceSl! of J,o!z the orlqinal value the ruament elllisaion can be considered as below normal and the tube should be returned to us for inspection.
In Ibe case of 10 volt lubes when the filament voltage Is dropped to 7.5 volta by substituting transformer. the grid curren! can be expected 10 drop 10 "'pproxim"'tely lh the nollll4l value. Should Ibe qrld current drop in e:tcess of Vt the oriqinai reading the lube can be considered as h",vtng low filament emIssion.
The ",bove information Is based on tubes being operated as class C amplifiers with the normal r",ted plale curren! flowing. Should a tube become defective for reasons other than filament emission such as cless failure or element lead wires damage the cause should be determined before replecinq with a new tube. Glass failure In the case of tube with both grid and filament leads brought out through one press is usually caused by; excessive grid voltage. excessive R.F. grid current or approaching the upper frequency limit of practical operation without reducinq the power Input. In the case of plate leads the glass mllY be cracked from excessive R.F. current. The RF. current in the plaIa lea.d Incre",SBs directly with frequency and In particularly destructive In casem where V-H.F. parasitic oscillation are presen!.
Experience has proven to us that tra1um;tting tubes can not be shipped via Parcel Post with safety. When tubes are returned JOT inspection pack the tubes vet'y carefully and ship via Express.

ClRCUlTtNFORMATION
A circuli em~loying the 8 i 3 in plate-modulated telephony service is S:-aC· ....... n GO this p(!.ge. In this circuit it will be noted that the plata-circui: by-pass condenser C. is connected 10 ground in series with screen by-pass C,. This arranqement minimizes the by.passmg eHect 01 Co at high audio Irequencies and greatly improves the modulation of the screen voltage. Because the screen Impecidnce of the 813 is about 20000 ohms and the series screen resistor required is 60o(l0 ohms, the capacitance ratio of C, to C. should be about 3 to 1. as indicated m the legend. For operation al 3.5 Mc and lower frequencies. it may be dessrable to increase the values of C. and Co. keeplnq their ratio the same.
In Class C telegraph service, where the qrid excitation or the cathode circuit of the 813 is 10 be keyed. it is Important that the screen voltaqe be obtained from a separate, low-vcltaqe source, or from a tap on a bleeder circuit across the plate supply. It should not be obtained through
a senes reSistor as shown in the plete-moduleted-telephony circuit With the aeries-reslstcr method, the D. C. screen voltage will rise ;0 Ihe plate potential when the space current is reduced to Zero. This voltage, ot course, greatly exceeds the maximum scraen-voltaqa rating. When the D. C. screen voltage is limited 10 approximately 400 volts under key·up conditions, a fixed grid bias of --45 or -50 volts is adequate to reduce the plate current to a safe value; pertial fixed hla8, therefore, is recommended in C. W. transmitters where the oscillator slage is to be keyed for breek-in operation. The reo mainder of the required grid bias can be convenlently obtained from a grid leak.

T-20
GENERAL PURPOSE TRIODE
20 WATTS PLATE DISSIPATION
$2.25
The T20 is recommended as an extremely fine amplifier tube on all frequencies up to 60 MC. Nearly 30,000 T20's and TZ20's combined have been bought by Amateurs throughout the world and dally we receive enthusiastic reports of long We and highly efficient performance. 1'20's end 1'220'8 requlre a m1nimum amount of exdtation and their ratings are conservative. While the rated plate dissipation Is 20 watts, no color shows on the plate until the dissipation amounts to approximately 32 watts and it takes about 45 watts to cause a cherry red spot in the center of the plete,
CAUTION: Taylor T20'8 and TZ20'8 have nickel plat .. and due to the much lower temperature at which this material will melt, 1hey do not have the same high standard of SAFETY F AGrOR that is a feature ot Taylor Tubes using carbon anodes. The Safely Fal:tof of T20's and TZ20's is approximately 80 watts. This does not mean that they will be any less efficient but It does mean they will not stand as much abuse. The plate voltage should be reduced while making adjustments to prevent excessive heating. Properly handled, the efficiency of these tubes will .e as qreat as though they had carbon anodes and their life will be equally as long.
