AMMONIA CRACKER

 Pressure Regulator – it is meant for giving constant Ammonia pressure to the

Cracker. Gas pressure can be adjusted by rotating the nut provided at the top.
Normally it is set at 0.5 bar pressure.

 Micro valve – it is set at 6.6 Bar, in case of Pressure regulator goes out of order
it will start venting Ammonia to atmosphere that is safety against over
Pressurization.

 Safety Valve - It is set at 7 bar. In case if pressure regulator goes out of order, it
will start venting Ammonia to atmosphere at 7 bar pressure.

 Shut off valve – To Cut off the Supply of Ammonia from Cylinders in case of
emergency like law temperature of furnace etc

 Retort - Nickel Chromium alloy. It is suitable for maximum 1000 C. The retort
is filled with Nickel Catalyst.

 Ammonia cracking reaction is endothermic so it requires heat from outside.

 Furnace – Ceramic fiber Insulation, Normal Operating temperature = 875 C, Max

operating Temperature = 1000 C. The heating elements of heater are of
Nichrome wire and have around 1.0 watts/cm2

 Heat Interchanger – Cracked Gas cooled from 875 C to 300 C, to increase

efficiency of Ammonia Cracker.

 Finned Air Cooler – Cracked Gas is Cooled from 300 C to 150 C

 Water Cooler - To Ambient Temperature (if water of 150 C pass through tubes
of Cooler,then Scaling occurs. )

 Retort – Nickel Chromium Alloy ,,, withstand 1000 C

 Moister Seperator – It is Hollow cylindrical Vessel where condensed moisture

from cracked gas is removed out. The inside the moisture separator rises with
very low velocity so no water droplets. Moisture forms only when fresh catalyst is
used.

 Pressure Drop in Ammonia Cracker = .4 bar

 Scaling – Deposition of different salts present in the water on the pipe surface
 Purifier – To remove the moisture and traces of uncracked Ammonia, Molecular
sieve purifier is provided

 1 bar = 10,000 mm of WC
