Tutorial Sheet 7

Topics Covered: Efficiency of Transformers.

Problem 1: In a 25 KVA, 2000/200 V power transformer the Iron and full load copper losses are 350 W and 400 W respectively. Calculate the Efficiency at unity power factor at i) Full Load ii) Half Load
(Solution: = 97.087 % & 96.525 % resp.)

Problem 2: A 220/400 V,10 KVA, 50Hz single phase Transformer has at full load, a copper loss of 120 W. If it has an efficiency of 98% at full load, unity power factor, determine the iron losses. What would be the efficiency of the transformer at half load at 0.8 p.f. lagging.
(Solution: Pi=84.08 W & = 97.23%)

Problem 3: The efficiency of a 400 KVA, single phase transformer is 98.77 % when delivering full load at 0.8 power factor and 99.13% at half load and unity power factor. Calculate i) The Iron losses ii) The full load Copper losses
(Solution: Pi = 1.012 W & Pc = 2.973 W)

Problem 4: A 50 kVA transformer has on full load a copper loss of 600 watts and iron loss of 500 watts, calculates the maximum efficiency and the load at which it occurs. (P.F.=1 for Max Eff.)
(Solution: Load=45.64 kVA & m= 97.85%)

Problem 5: A 600 kVA, single phase transformer has an efficiency of 92% both at full load and half load at unity power factor. Determine its efficiency at 60% of full load at 0.8 power factor lagging. Calculate the efficiency on a) Full Load b) Half Load
(Solution: = 90.59 %)

Problem 6: The Primary and secondary windings of a 500 kVA transformer has resistance of 0.42 and 0.0019 respectively. The primary voltage and secondary voltages are 11000 V and 400 V resp. Core loss is 2.9 kW, Assuming power factor of load to be 0.8, Calculate the efficiency at i) Full Load ii) Half Load
(Solution: = 98.3% and 98.1% resp.)

Problem7: The efficiency of a 1000 kVA , 110/220 V, 50 hz single phase transformer is 98.5% at half load and 0.8 p.f. leading and 98.8% at full load at unity power factor. Find Iron Loss and Full Load Copper Loss.
(Solution:Pi=4.073 kW, PC=8.073 kW)
