Assignment EE 1000 - Single Phase Transformer and DC machine

Due Date: 19 Apr, 2023, 5:30 pm

Question 1. For a 5 KVA, 250 V/500 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer we get following
test data.
O.C. Test: 250 V, 1 A, 125 W.
S.C. Test: 20 V, 10 A, 80 W.
(i) Determine the parameters of the equivalent circuit referred to HV side and LV side. (ii)
Calculate the secondary voltage on full load at 0.8 p.f. lag.
Question 2. A 10 KVA, 200 V/50 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has iron loss (core
loss) of 100 W. For the HV side current of 50 A, the copper loss is 200 W. Determine (i)
LV side current at maximum efficiency. (ii) maximum efficiency at lagging power factor
angle of 36.87o .
Question 3. The maximum efficiency of a 50 KVA single phase transformer occurs at 3/5
th of the full load, where full load efficiency is 97% at 0.85 p.f. lag load. Determine (i) core
loss and full load copper loss of the transformer. (ii) The efficiency at 3/4 th of full load
and 0.7 p.f. lead.
Question 4. Maximum efficiency of a 50 KVA, 3300 V/230 V, 50 Hz single phase trans-
former is 96% and the maximum efficiency occurs at 75% of full load at unity power
factor. Find
(i) full load copper loss,
(ii) equivalent leakage resistance referred to secondary (re2 ),

(iii) voltage regulation with 0.8 p.f. lagging load if per unit leakage reactance, =

10%,
(iv) find voltage regulation at same condition with 0.8 p.f. leading load.
Question 5. A 6 pole DC machine has 300 conductors in the armature and each conductor
is capable of carrying 80A at rated condition. The flux per pole is 0.015 Wb and the ma-
chine is driven at rated speed of 1800 RPM. Compute the induced emf, total current, rated
electromagnetic power, and rated electromagnetic torque if the armature conductors are:
(a) wave connected, (b) lap connected.
Question 6. A 10 KW, 400 V DC shunt motor has rated speed of 900 RPM, armature circuit
resistance (including brushes) of 1Ω and shunt field resistance of 400Ω. If efficiency at
rated load is 85%, then find,
(a) no load armature current,
(b) speed when motor draws 20A from mains,
(c) armature current when eletromagnetic torque developed is 98.5 N-m.
Question 7. A 250 V, 15 KW DC shunt motor has a maximum efficiency of 88% and a
speed of 700 RPM when delivering 80% of its rated output. The resistance of its shunt
field is 100Ω. Determine efficiency and speed when motor draws a current of 78A from
mains.
