Term End Examination Model Question Paper

Course: MEE 309- Elective-Internal Combustion Engines Time : 3 Hrs Answer Any FIVE Questions 1. a) b) Enlist the factors which affect the process of carburetion. A four cylinder four stroke engine having diameter and length of strokes as 100mm and 120mm respectively is running at 1800 rpm. Its carburettor venturi has a 28mm throat. Assuming coefficient of air flow 0.8, density of air 1.2 kg/m3 and volumetric efficiency of the engine as 75 %, determine the suction at the throat. c) Explain with figures different types of combustion chambers used in SI engines. [8] [10] [8] [2] Max Marks : 100

2. a) Explain the various stages of combustion in CI engine with neat sketch.

b) How are CI engine combustion chambers classified? What type of swirl is used in these chambers? c) How are injection system classified? 3. a) Explain the formation of NOx in detail. b) Write short notes on EGR. c) Identify the effect of Catalytic converter on emissions. 4. a) Can alcohol be used for CI engine? If so explain in detail. b) Compare the qualities of LPG with CNG 5. a) List the advantages of hybrid vehicles. Discuss about various types of hybrid vehicle with neat sketch. b) What is HCCI? What are the advantages of HCCI? [12] [8] [10] [2] [10] [8] [2] [10] [10]

6.a)

A six-cylinder, four stroke oil engine develops 200kW at 1200 rpm and consumes 0.3kg/kWh. Determine the diameter of a single orifice injector if the injection pressure is 200bar and combustion chamber pressure is 40 bar.. The injection is carried out for 300 rotation of a crank. Each nozzle on a cylinder is provided with single orifice. [10]

b) Derive the expression for the air-fuel ratio prepared by a simple carburettor and identify its major drawback. 7. a) Discuss about engine modifications required to control engine emissions. b) Mention the merits and demerits of lean burn engines. [10] [10] [10]
