WALKING JOYFULLY IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Welcome back and Happy New Year to everyone! Our new year is off to a wonderful start at St. Josephs. Everyone should be very proud of the wonderful Christmas concert that was held in December to celebrate our Catholic faith and the coming of Jesus. I enjoyed the opportunity to watch the afternoon performance and I could tell that the staff and students worked very hard to put on a fantastic show! Although I was not able to attend the Christmas dinner I look forward to being able to share in this wonderful school tradition next year. We will be celebrating Literacy Day on Jan. 27th. Parents are encouraged to recognize Family Literacy Day on the 27th at home with their children. The theme this year is Journey to Learning! Please see the last page of the newsletter for some at-home activities and ideas. I would like to thank the staff, students and parents who have helped to make my transition this week a smooth and rewarding one. I look forward to getting to know you all better and working together to ensure that St. Joes continues to be an inclusive, safe and engaging school community. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming SAC meeting on Monday, Jan. 16th at 6:30 pm.

Faith in Action - School Mass Our next school mass will be held on Tuesday January 24th at 10:30 am. Our grade 6/7 class will be our hosts.

ST. JOES ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DINNER

St. Josephs students, staff and parent volunteers enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner on the last day of school. We thank everyone involved for making it a huge success . Special thanks to Mrs. Niki Saunders and her husband Scott for coordinating this event.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY FEBRUARY 1, 2012 PERMISSION FORMS

From time to time student permission forms are misplaced or forgotten at school. Rather than send another permission form or have a student miss an outing, we have placed a blank copy of a generic permission form on our school website. Parents may download this at home, print the form and complete it and return it to school at the designated time. Please note this form has been placed under LINKS>PARENT>FORMS as Field Trip App C Form.

Inclement Weather Update

It is inevitable that we will get our share of snowy/inclement weather at St. Josephs. Please ensure you stay informed of the latest news regarding bus delays and cancellations. In the event of bus delays and/or bus and school cancellations/closures, parents can receive information from two main sources: 1. The most reliable method for receiving information on bus delays, cancellations and school closure is the Huron -Perth Transportation Services website which can be found at: http://www.ourschoolbuses.ca You can link to this page from the school and board websites by clicking on the bus logo. 2. Announcements can also be heard on the radio by listening to CFPL 980AM, CKNX 101.7 FM101.7 and MYFM 90.5 FM. It is important to note that when buses are cancelled, the school will be closed to students.

GRADE 2 NEWS
Just before Christmas, 'Oma' Jean Van Rooy, the 'Slipper Elf' struck again. The twenty-three Grade Two students at St. Joe's School all received a pair of hand-knit, personally-initialled slippers as a Christmas gift. When the students tried on their new slippers they leaped and slid around the classroom like little lambs! There really is no better feeling than receiving a gift made with love, personally for you!! God Bless Us Everyone!

If it becomes stormy while we are at school In the rare event that students are transported home before the regular time, due to developing severe weather, parents/ guardians will be contacted through the Emergency Phone List (if you requested a phone call via the Emergency Dismissal Form that parents completed in the fall). Also, we ask that you check radio stations, the Boards cancellation icon which is linked to our school website and also check your email as a family email will be sent. Help us keep our phone lines open! We ask that you refrain from calling the school during these times so that we can make the emergency phone calls. If you plan to pick up your children on stormy days before regular dismissal time, simply come to the school, let the office know that you are taking your children and record your childrens names in the sign-out book (to avoid confusion at bussing time). Please know that we take our responsibility for your childrens safety very seriously, and appreciate your support and understanding. During the school year, if phone numbers, addresses or other emergency information changes, it is the responsibility of parents to inform the school.

From the Desk of Allyson Austin; School Based Social Worker:

Welcome to 2012! Looking for an achievable New Years Resolution? Why not focus on what you can choose to do, not on what you wish you could do. Life is all about choices! You can choose to smile every day, to say I love you to your family every day. Choose to go outside and play in the snow instead of complaining about it. You can choose to use that that good china tonight! Dont leave it for a special occasion, today IS a special occasion! Wishing you and yours a very safe and happy New Year.

EXTRA PAIR OF PANTS, UNDERWEAR,SOCKS AT SCHOOL

We seem to have several students in need of dry clothing from time to time. Please consider sending your children with extra clothing to keep in their back packs so they may be comfortable while at school. This would also eliminate the need to disrupt parents time during the school day.

CHRISTMAS ADVENT CONCERT 2012

January 27, 2011 will mark the twelfth year of Family Literacy Day. ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation created this national day with support from founding sponsor Honda Canada to promote the importance of families playing together as a means to help develop literacy and numeracy skills. Family Literacy Day is one of many days when families can take the time to explore, share ideas and encourage each others hobbies and interests, says Margaret Eaton, president of ABC CANADA. Below are popular activities suggested by families who organize Family Literacy Day events. For more info on Family Literacy Day http://www.abc-canada.org/en/family_literacy_day

Activities for families and small groups:

Surfing Safari: Use an atlas to find a country you would like to visit, then surf the Internet to find some interesting things about that place -- customs, food, weather, anything at all. Write a story and draw pictures based on what you have learned. You could even post a map of the world on a wall and use push pins to identify the places you have been. Daffy Dictionary: Choose a word from the dictionary and write it on a piece of paper with one correct definition, then make up two more definitions that are incorrect but 'sound' like they might be accurate. See who can guess the correct definition. Teams can play this game, with members coming up with the daffy definitions together and also guessing the other team's correct definition. Community book club: Challenge your neighbours to read the same book during the holiday season and through January and then meet at a convenient location (at someone's house for a pot-luck supper, for example) on Family Literacy Day, January 27, to discuss the book. It may be so much fun you'll want to hold two or three throughout the year. Have a Book-nic: Organize an indoor picnic featuring books and delicious treats. Choose a theme around family food and reading preferences; for example, enjoy honey-flavoured cereal while reading Winnie the Pooh stories. Watch a book: Set up a book-and-movie group where a book will be read and discussed, and then the film version will be watched. There are many good titles, both for adults and young people that have been made into films. Youve Got Mail: With adult supervision, have children go online and find a suitable electronic postcard to customize and send to a loved one. Author, Author!: Create a family journal by interviewing family members and writing down favourite jokes and stories from your kid brother, father, mother and Great Aunt Edna. Game On: Set up a family board game night where a different game is played each week. Have each member of the family involved in reading instructions and game cards and keeping score. Sous Chef: Following recipes is a great way to improve both reading and math skills. Ask your children to read the instructions out loud and to help measure the ingredients when making a treat for the family. Map out your trip: Have your kids create the map for your next road trip then they can navigate by reading signs and billboards. Create a trip journal. Surf the Internet together to find great sites that support your hobbies. Write daily entries in a journal.

Create a family book club: Read and discuss together. Post your familys top 10 books list and book reviews online. Write your own adventure: Write a short story as a family with alternative endings written by each family member. Read a classic adventure together: If your children like Survivor, they will love Treasure Island. Climb the Beanstalk: Cut out a beanstalk shape from pieces of construction paper and post it on a wall in your childs room. For every book your child reads, a leaf, with the title of the book and authors name, can be added. Research & write your familys history: Use the Internet, family letters and documents as resources, and interview your relatives. Get the news! Read news articles and magazines and then discuss current affairs together. Travel the World: Take your children to the library and use your library card as a passport. Check out books on different countries 6 to learn about their geography and traditions.
