Helensburgh Hig
Celebrating 125 Years

PRINCIPAL REPORT

PRESENTATION 2012
This Tuesday, 11 December 2012, our school will meet to
celebrate the achievements of our students and the
successes of our educational programs, sporting teams and
community involvement. This year we have combined the
Special Assembly with Presentation to give the day a whole
school focus. The program will begin at 9:15 am with
special guests including Sharon Bird MP our federal
Member, Lee Evans MP our local State member, Cr Gordon
Bradbury Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong, Local
Councillors and school patrons.

STUDENT REPORTS
This week students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will
receive their end of year reports. These reports contain
valuable information concerning your child's progress of
the last semester of 2012. Comments contained in the
reports are based on the performance of your child as
measured against subject indicators. These indicator
statements are measured against subject outcomes for
each stage of school. When reading reports parents are
asked to refer to the cover for detailed descriptions of each
level of attainment and effort. !f after reading your child's
report you want further explanation I encourage you to
make an appointment to speak to your child's teacher.

OVAL OPENED
Following months of redevelopment our school oval was
opened last Wednesday for the first time. Throughout the
week students from all grades have had the opportunity to
play on the new synthetic surface and to freely run and
play ball games. I would like to acknowledge that the oval
redevelopment would not have been possible without the
generosity of Peabody Coal and a 50/50 Capital grant from
the NSW State Government. Our Parent and Citizens
Association have also donated generously to this project so
that our students and future students may have first class
sporting facilities.

WORKING BEE
On Saturday 8 December a team of hardworking parents
and teachers met to refresh the old vegetable garden area
of the school. I want to express my appreciation to all
those in attendance for their dedication and commitment to
our school. We are hoping this kind of dedication will
translate to success as we approach the judging of the
Wollongong City Rise and Shine Awards this coming
Thursday night.

PLAYGROUND UPGRADES
Over the weekend markings have been added to the hard
surface areas of our school with new handball courts, wall
targets and a fitness track added for students to enjoy. I
would like to thank Nrs Jeffree, Nr Campbell and the Life
Life Well" team for their direction of this project.

The inaugural Helensburgh Christmas Reverse Christmas
Tree will be held in our school hall on Monday 17
th

December, 2012. All students will attend to sing carols to
celebrate the end of year and Christmas.
This is also the time when we can donate a gift, food or
money to the Anglicare Toys `N Tucker Appeal for 2012. All
donations will help those less fortunate at Christmas.
Anglicare have sent information that toy suggestions
include: Fisher Price type toys for under 3 year olds, toiletry
packs, retail gift cards or watches for teen boys. Please do
not wrap your gift donation. Foods they require are spreads:
jam, vegemite, nutella, long-life custard, Christmas
puddings, cakes, shortbreads or small sweet biscuits.
You may bring in your donation now; the S.R.C. will be
collecting all donations brought in before the assembly.
Money donations can be placed in an envelope available in
the office, so that you can apply for a tax donation
exemption. Otherwise, we will be setting up a Christmas

placed underneath. Thank you in anticipation of your
generosity.

Environmental News

Many thanks to Mrs Hanley, Colin, Dave,
Bridgit, fabulous students Slade and Chase, and
our offsiders Jasmin, Keiran and Abigail for
Saturday's working bee. 75 pioneer rainforest
species were planted below the newly turfed
bottom oval. Pictures of the morning, including
the little green tree frog, can be seen on our
school blog. An extra big thank you for the
lovely neighbour, Mark, for helping out with
water.
Raffle Tickets
For your chance to cook with the great tasting
vegies and herbs from the school's garden, buy
a raffle ticket to win a box of fresh produce on
Presentation Day, Tuesday, December 11th.
CANTEEN N EWS
Christmas Cheer Weeks 10 and 11. Special Xmas
treats will be available as we head into the festive
break.

Presentation Day - We will be serving morning tea
and special treats for parents on Tuesday.

Revised Canteen Menu - A new menu will be
available from the start of next year. We will add a
few new lunch items that will enhance our healthy
eating options. Certain items are included on a daily
basis because as a canteen we have to be available
for students every day and most children do not order
every day so this way they still have a range of
options. We follow the Healthy Canteen guidelines
and it is our aim to cater for all students and staff
within the school.

Forgotten lunches - if your child does not have
lunch for some reason, the teachers will send them to
the canteen. We are very accommodating and will
provide the child with lunch items, but we also need
the parents cooperation in sending in the money. An
account is issued to the child with the lunch and we
ask that this be paid immediately. There are several
children who have outstanding amounts, these will be
issued with a reminder note this week - please
finalise before the end of term. Thank you.

Canteen Helpers - Thank you to everyone who has
volunteered to help out in the canteen next year. A
roster for Term 1 has been finalised and will be
distributed this week.

Uniform News
Please note that the canteen provides an order
service for all Heathcote High Uniform items. Our
prices are the same or less than Claudine's at
Caringbah.
Thank you for you continued support.
