Helensburgh Hig Celebrating 125 Years
PUBLIC SPEAKING The Stage 3 representatives for the Seacliff Community of Schools Public Speaking competition will be decided this week. Each student has a prepared speech followed by an impromptu talk on a topic they have not seen until the day. Internally competition has been strong across the school and I have been really impressed with the standard. The Stage 2 representatives were chosen last week. Congratulations to Kye and reserve Matthew.

'LG<RX.QRZ In the early years of Helensburgh, the town was divided into `name sections': `Pompeii' (pronounced Pompy eye) - below the railway station, `Struggle Town' - from the railway station to the school, `Helensburgh' - from the current school to Walker Street, `Lilyvale' - east of Walker St and south of Witty Bridge, `Blue Gum' - along Princes Highway to what is now known as Lawrence Hargrave Drive and `Darkes Forest' - unchanged, still Darkes Forest
There were many forms of transport used for children to attend school including horse and cart, bicycle, horse back, and of course, walking!
By 1915 the school had its first infants mistress", Clara Morgan, who was replaced by Minnie Cusack in 1916.
The Headmaster was Mr Denning with a staff of 10 teachers and an enrolment of 560! Enrolments had increased significantly as a result of the extensive railway deviation works. This included the construction of a new railway station and the cutting out of 2 railway tunnels. The new Helensburgh Railway Station was officially opened on 30th May 1915.
PRINCIPAL REPORT
EDUCATION WEEK 2012 Education Week was a great success at Helensburgh Public School with a number of opportunities for parents and community members to visit our school and to participate in a variety of activities. During this special week students from our school competed in both Infants and Primary Athletics carnivals and invited parents to visit their classrooms during Open Day. Our Primary Choir performed at the 2012 Illawarra Choral Festival on Wednesday 1 August. This prestigious event is held annually at the Wollongong Town Hall. I would like to thank Mrs Murray for her leadership of the school choir this year and the dedication of our choir members who give up their lunch hours to rehearse and refine their singing skills.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The school was blessed with a magnificent day with fine weather and comfortable temperatures. I was impressed with how smoothly the day ran given the postponement of last week. I would like to offer the sincere thanks of the organisers and teaching staff for the excellent parent support we received on the day. It was a real Helensburgh team effort and our students benefited from our efforts. Congratulations to Beau W and Krystal who broke records on the day. I look forward to the final House points score and the formation of our strong representative team to compete at the District carnival.
QUALITY TEACHING Our school is committed to quality teaching for quality learning; to this end teachers of Kindergarten to Year 2 have been receiving intensive training in Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) to enhance the teaching of numeracy in the early years of schooling, a target clearly listed in our 2012 to 2014 School Plan. Parents may also be aware, our Year 5 and 6 teachers are already implementing the Counting On program which aims at improving student performance in number. If you add these initiatives to the work being done to lift student spelling performance through our involvement in the Spelling Review, you can be assured your child's school is committed to ongoing school improvement through research based teaching and learning programs.

Netball Semi-Final Last Friday our Junior B Netball Team played an amazing game against Menai Public School. Helensburgh won 11 - 2. It was a fast paced game with every one giving their best. Congratulations, girls - now onto the finals!
Wollongong Schools Choral Festival Congratulations to our choir! Last Wednesday we attended a full day rehearsal and then our evening performance at the Wollongong Town Hall. The children looked so neat and wonderful and sang beautifully. I would like to congratulate them most on their behaviour. After teaching them what ! call Performance Behaviour" they did Helensburgh proud. They sat perfectly still on stage, never fidgeted, never talked and looked to their conductor at all times. They were praised on five separate occasions by other teachers and the stage managers. Well done choir!
FATHERS DAY STALL The stall will be held Wednesday 29th August and we ask that ALL money for presents be sent in to the class teacher by Friday 24 th August. Any money not receipted before the day of the stall, (i.e. brought in on the day) may result in the child having to purchase a gift at the end of the stall as we will be monitoring the ratio of $10 to $5 gifts. Please fill in the form below, nominating how many presents of each price range are required. Please send money and note in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name, class and the amount enclosed. Any cheques should be made out to Helensburgh Public School P&C and please do not include with any other school expenses. Most presents will not be wrapped, because they have come to us in protective wrapping or boxes and we thought it better to send the gifts home the same way. Your child will have chosen the item with love from our display table and we ask that you remember this when they present you with it. PLEASE SUPPORT THE STALL - your children's education will benefit. _____________________________________________________________________________________

This caring and clever logo will be printed on t-shirts to identify Enviro Team members. So far this term, Stage 3 students have; performed a school-wide electrical energy audit, moved a mountain of mulch to the `quiet area', and continued their quest to eradicate weeds-as well as collecting compost and recycling from classrooms. Sunday saw volunteers Mr La Flamme, Mrs Hanley, and Neil and Jasmin Clarkson planting a further 86 natives in the quiet area. 15 kilos of spent batteries have been collected by the Helensburgh. P.S community via the office - Thank you families! Great news for our rainwater collection system...a 9000 litre tank has been donated by http://www.happyearth.com.au of Wollongong.

125 Celebrations continue with our Anniversary Fete! Don't forget to order your all-day ride pass soon, as the 125 Anniversary Fete is only weeks away! Our class stalls are coming together nicely but we still have classes with no parent helpers for the day - please send back your volunteer form so your class parent can organise their roster (and breathe again). Thanks to those parents who have returned your forms - you're in the draw to win a family dinner at Raya Thai.
Over the next few weeks we'll be asking for donations of small items needed by various class stalls. If you can help by donating any of these, please bring them to school on Friday afternoons, or send them to the office if this is more convenient. 1/2K needs patty cake cases, sprinkles, 100's & 1000's, cachous, mini M&M, jelly beans, marshmallows, skewers, plastic plates and spoons, gloves, chocolate, dried apricots, coconut or flaked chocolate - obviously they are working on something totally delicious! K/1 require small items suitable for lucky dips; 2H needs can of coloured hair spray and headbands; 4/5B would like empty, clean, clear 750ml plastic bottles and 5T would love some terra cotta pots, small to medium size or glass tumblers to use for a terrarium and pantyhose to make grass heads. Thanks to the award-winning About Faces Photography studio, families will have the opportunity for some great savings when you pre-book a Fairy Dell or Fantasy sitting. The fee is normally $150, but families who make an advance booking will pay only $40, and $10 of this will be donated to the school! Children can be photographed as elves, fairies or dragon riders. Older children can be photographed against a Hogwarts or other fantasy background. Costumes are supplied or children may wish to wear their own. To pre-book and take advantage of this great opportunity, contact Janet on 4283 8480 or at info@aboutfaces.com.au . We are still in need of donations of books, DVDs, craft items, White Elephant goods and Chocolate Wheel. Any items you are able to donate can be left at the school on Friday afternoons, and thanks! Remember to make your 125 memories jolly ones by ordering your 125 merchandise and classic red wine! Follow Up to the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey Of School Children All students in years 2-6 at Helensburgh PS will be invited to participate in an anonymous survey about eating patterns, nutrition knowledge, sport, social networks and physical activity. The survey has been conducted at HPS in 2000 and 2006 and we are now repeating the study in 2012 at the same schools from every state and territory of Australia to compare the results and see if anything has changed over 12 years.
All students in years 2-6 will be invited to complete a survey about food, nutrition, physical activity, sport , social networks and health and we will measure and record his/ her height and weight in private. The survey and the height/weight measurement is optional. This survey is not compulsory.
Special Reading Program Urgently Needs Tutors At HPS we run a special reading program called `Hubbard St". volunteer tutors work with our senior students. Unfortunately this year some tutors have left so we are in need of some more tutors. If you can spare as little as half an hour once a week please see Mrs McPherson or leave your name and contact number at the office. Mrs McPherson runs a short training session for tutors. No experience needed! The students will greatly appreciate the help.
