PUPILS SELECTED TO REPRESENT UK

Congratulations to Year 11 pupils Michael Savery, Alex
Selway and Luned Stevens who have been selected to
represent the UK at the World Scout Jamboree in Japan
in 2015. Over 150 young people, who are members of
the Scout Association in the County of Avon, applied for
the once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the UK
contingent. Michael, Alex and Luned were chosen to
represent Cabot District as part of the County of Avon
contingent. This is a fantastic personal achievement for
our three pupils. We wish them well as they now fund
raise in preparation for the trip.
DRAUGHTS COMPETITION
The annual library
draughts competition
was decided yesterday
after six weeks of fierce
competition. The
participants had to
challenge others who
were above them on the leaderboard and if successful
they would progress to the top. Congratulations to our
winners Joseph Alexander, Tobias Olds and Renji Babu
who were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
Well done to everyone who participated. I hope
everyone who played, above all, had fun and enjoyed
competing. Tobias Olds, Year 10

DUKE OF EDINBURGH
Ms Hughes was delighted yesterday to award certificates
to Ben Pembery, Helena Pickup and Michael Savery
who have successfully completed the Bronze Duke of
Edinburgh Award. St Bedes has been running the Duke
of Edinburgh Award scheme since last year. It offers
fantastic character building opportunities. A number of
pupils are currently doing their Bronze this year and we
hope to see even more pupils participate next year.

POETRY LIVE!
On Friday 7th February, 15 Year 11 pupils attended the
annual Poetry Live event in Bath. With almost one
thousand students from across the West Country packed
into The Forum, the atmosphere was fantastic and
expectation high. Some of the biggest names connected
with contemporary poetry were in attendance, all of
whom have been staples in the GCSE Anthology for
several years.
The day started with two of the Grand Dames of British
poetry. Carol Ann Duffy, the current Poet Laureate, and
Gillian Clarke, the National Poet of Wales, illustrated
their own poems with stories of how they were written.
They also let the students know some insider
knowledge that will help them with their forthcoming
exams. This was further emphasised by a chief
examiner from AQA who offered some valuable tips.
The undoubted highlights of the day were Simon
Armitage and John Agard. Both spoke with passion and
insight with Armitages Out of the Blue extract, in
particular, bringing a total hush to the hall. John Agard
is always a favourite and he made sure that everybody in
the venue left with a smile on their face and, hopefully,
an interest in live poetry.

SAFER INTERNET DAY

Safer Internet Day was
celebrated across the globe
on 11th February 2014.
This years theme was: Lets
create a better Internet
together! Here at St
Bedes all staff got involved
in activities and discussions with pupils to help
encourage the safe, responsible and positive use of
technology.
Following this event, it is now a great time for parents to
talk to children about staying safe online. Here are some
discussion topics:

Ask your children to tell you what they like most

about the internet and why e.g. sites they visit, ways to
communicate, games they play etc.

Ask your children what they would like others to

do, to improve or change the internet and make it a
better place.

Ask them to tell you how they stay safe online.

What tips do they have for you, to deal with online
issues, and where did they learn them?

Ask your children if they know where to go for

help, where to find the safety advice, privacy settings
and how to report or block on the services they use.

What could your children do themselves to make

the internet a better place? Do they have creative skills,
or ideas, to design a great new website or app?

Encourage your children to help others. Perhaps

they can show you how to do something better online or
they might have a friend who would benefit from their
help and support.

Think about how you each use the internet. What

more could you do to use the internet together? Are
there activities you could enjoy as a family?
ART TRIP
On Friday 7th February, Art pupils from Years 10, 12 and
13 travelled to London to visit the National Portrait
Gallery and National Gallery. This trip was vital for their
GCSE, AS Level and IB coursework and pupils got the
chance to see portraits spanning centuries; from the
sixteenth century up to the present day. We saw works
by Warhol, Van Gogh, Monet and Turner and pupils have
produced work for their own portfolios from the trip. It
was so important that they got to see these paintings in
a Gallery. The weather was kind to us and we enjoyed
lunch in Trafalgar Square; it was a thoroughly
worthwhile trip!

READATHON CHALLENGE
We are now one week into the Readathon challenge.
Please encourage your child to action their reading
challenges and fill in their sponsor cards. The weather is
dreadful, so reading is a good alternative!
To paraphrase the author James Patterson There is no
such thing as someone who doesnt love to read, there
are simply people who have been reading the wrong
books.
KINTBURY
On 30th January, Elena Bull, Ellie-May Mitchell, Ben
Whitfield, Alex Selway, Michael Savery, Tim Burke,
Marianne Vasquez and Mrs Cannon travelled to St.
Cassian's in Kintbury for a retreat, which was held over 4
days. We all had an amazing time and met a lot of
people from different schools - including Cardinal
Newman in Wales and St. Edwards in Poole. The
experience we had was very memorable and gave us an
opportunity to make new friends and to reflect. We
were able to interact with everyone and took part in
many activities, including a Mass on the final night in
which we all had a part to play. The Retreat gave us a
chance to relax and for that one weekend, take away all
the stress from school work.
Marianne Vasquez, Year 11

SENIOR SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS

The Year 9 Girls and Boys and Year 10 Boys Indoor
Athletics teams qualified from the heats to represent St
Bedes at the Bristol Schools Final. The competition was

achieved some great times and distances.
The Year 9 and 10 Boys teams both finished in 2nd place,
and the Year 9 Girls team finished in 1st place and are
now Bristol Schools Champions. Well done to all who
