Part 1: THE SANCTUARY AND THE ARC OF COVENANT

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged

sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Those who believe in Jesus Christ are Jews because they become Abrahams seed. We are heirs through faith in Christ. Galatians 3:28-29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Jesus is our High Priest, the Minister of the Heavenly Sanctuary Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens,

Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

In order to have a clear picture of what the sanctuary is, we need to study the sanctuary system of the Hebrew nation.
Hebrews 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of

the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; The veil here is a reference to the Sanctuary veil. In the Hebrew Sanctuary, there were 3 main sections. (1)First you had the Outer Court where the animal sacrifices took place. In the outer court, sinners brought their sin offerings and thanksgiving offerings to the priest. This is where you had the Altar of Burnt Offerings. The Bronze Laver was also located in the outer court, where the priest would wash his hands and feet before entering the sanctuary.

When Jesus died on the cross, the sanctuary veil was rent or torn from top to bottom signifying that God did it and that He brought an end to the earthly animal sacrifice system because Jesus shed his blood for the remission of our sins. Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (2)Second, there was the Holy Place of the sanctuary, this is where the priest performed the daily service. The articles of furniture were: Table of Shewbread Jesus is our bread of life Seven Golden Candlestick Jesus the light of the world Altar of Incense The intercessory prayer of Jesus on our behalf. (3)Most Holy Place The only furniture in the Most Holy Place is the Ark of Testament (Covenant) which contained the tablets of stone with the holy Ten Commandments written with the finger of God.
Exodus 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of

communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Thus, Jesus became our High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary.

And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.

And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:

Hebrews 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for

ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Jesus became the minister of the heavenly sanctuary that God made and not man. Hebrews 8:1-2 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

The tabernacle on earth was a copy of the heavenly. God showed Moses a pattern and he was to made the earthly sanctuary according to that pattern. The entire sanctuary service was a representation of Christs redemptive work for humanity. Every object in the sanctuary had a particular meaning. Christ himself was the Sacrifice and the High Priest. When Christ died, he fulfilled the sacrificial service of the sanctuary which took place in the outer court. When Jesus Christ resurrected, He became our High Priest of the heavenly sanctuary that God made and not man. Hebrews 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Compare the Earthly Sanctuary with the Heavenly: Christ our Sacrifice by the blood of goats offering unto the LORD for his sin which he and calves, but by his own blood he entered hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb in once into the holy place, having obtained or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and eternal redemption for us. the priest shall make an atonement for him Hebrews 9: 28 So Christ was once offered to concerning his sin. bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

It shows Him as a ministering priest among the churches ( Revelation 1:12,13 & 20). It reveals the opening of the holy place in the heavenly sanctuary. It shows Christ's work in the Holy Place beginning. It shows one door closing and another door opening in that sanctuary. It shows the time of judgment( Jesus enters the Most Holy place Revelation 11:19) It shows the closing scenes during that judgment. A new Covenant: Hebrews 8:8-10 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: Old Covenant Exodus 34 28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. New Covenant Hebrews 10: 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

The New Covenant is not a new system of worship or new rules, but it is the same Law of God, given on Mount Sinai, written with the finger of God that will be written in our hearts. These verses show that the bible is very consistent. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament agree what the New Covenant is. Exodus 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Jeremiah 31:31-33 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant

that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel;

After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the Commandments of God, and the Faith of Jesus.
Revelation 14: 12

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his

commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Part 2: The Sanctuary Rediscovered

The fundamental verse which describes this pillar of our faith is found in: Psa 77:13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? Psa 73:17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. I order for us to understand this message, we must first understand the Hebrew sanctuary service instituted by God and given to Moses. Exodus 25:8,9 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. God has made the plan of salvation known unto us by the means of the sanctuary service. In the light of this service, we, Gods people, are being taught our duties, responsibilities, blessings and privileges in this great plan to redeem fallen men.

The Structure of the Sanctuary

This sanctuary consisted of three main division, the Most Holy, The Holy, and the Outer Court. These divisions can also be grouped as two main sections which are: the Inner Court and the Outer court. Eze 8:16 And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

Lev 6:16 And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it. The Inner Court is also referred to as the Tabernacle (which included the Most Holy and the Holy place). The verse below refers to the Outer Court as Holy. These rules are not always clear in the KJV. In order for us to know exactly what part of the sanctuary is being discussed we must look at the articles of furniture to establish location more accurately. Lev 16:23 And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there: Lev 16:24 And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people. The Most Holy is also referred to as the Temple of the Tabernacle. Rev 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. Rev 15:5 And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: Rev 15:6 And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. Below we have a graphical representation of the earthly Sanctuary.

Priests and Ministers of the Sanctuary

In the earthly sanctuary service, only Aaron and his sons were permitted to be priests. The Levites were given the responsibility of all duties in connection with the sanctuary.
Num 1:53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.

Duties of the Levites:

Num 3:6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. Num 3:7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. Num 3:8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. Num 3:9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. Num 3:10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priest's office: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

These verses presents very clearly Gods order in connection with His sanctuary. The remainder of this chapter explains how God substituted the male levites for the first born sons dedicated to His service. The Levites taught the people the way of the Lord:
Neh 8:9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

2Ch 35:3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel, 2Ch 30:22 And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers. 1Ch 15:22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.

The Sanctuary Service on Earth is a Pattern of the Heavenly Sanctuary Service

Exo 25:9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. Heb 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Num 8:4 And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick.

Type Meet Anti-Type

For every type there is and anti-type. Gods way is in the sanctuary because it fully reveals the plan of salvation in terms that our finite minds can understand. We have seen that for the earthly sanctuary there is a heavenly type. The earthly high priest (or priesthood) has been replaced by our High Priest Jesus Christ. We know from various references in the bible (for example the books of Hebrews and Revelations) that there is a heavenly sanctuary where Jesus ministers with his own blood shed for our sins. But, there were duties performed by the other Levites that were not priests. As we read above, these priests taught and ministered to the spiritual needs of the people. This leads to the following questions: Where is the Outer Court, because the bible only talks about the Tabernacle being in heaven? Jesus died in the outer court, at the hand of the high priest. The high priest condemned Jesus to death. In the earthly service, it was the high priest that killed the Passover lamb. Joh 18:3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Joh 11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Joh 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. Joh 11:51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; Joh 11:52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Joh 11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. The church of God below is one with the church of God above. Believers on the earth and the beings in heaven who have never fallen constitute one church. Every heavenly intelligence is interested in the assemblies of the saints who on earth meet to worship God. In the inner court of heaven they listen to the testimony of the witnesses for Christ in the outer court on earth, and the praise and thanksgiving from the worshipers below is taken up in the heavenly anthem, and praise and rejoicing sound through the heavenly courts because Christ has not died in vain for the fallen sons of Adam. Testimonies Vol 6, page 367 Who is the modern day equivalent to the non-priest Levite? Jesus drove out the money changers = type, what is the anti-type? This will involve the shaking of the church. The whip will be the passage of the national Sunday law. The term "sanctuary," as used in the Bible, refers, first, to the tabernacle built by Moses, as a pattern of heavenly things; and, secondly, to the "true tabernacle" in heaven, to which the earthly sanctuary pointed. {GC 416} At the termination of the 2300 days, in 1844, there had been no sanctuary on earth for many centuries. Thus the prophecy, "Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed," unquestionably points to the sanctuary in heaven. {GC 417.1} Day by day the repentant sinner brought his offering to the door of the tabernacle and, placing his hand upon the victim's head, confessed his sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself to the innocent sacrifice. . {GC 417.2}

The 2300 Days Prophecy

Fulfilled prophecy is Gods unanswerable challenge to unbelief. The 2300 days prophecy, written over 500 years before Jesus birth, foretold the time of His baptism, the time of His crucifixion and the time when the Gospel would begin to go out to the Gentile world. It has been called: The Keystone of Old Testament Prophecy, because it locks all the other securely into place. The Bible contains many marvels, but none is greater than this!

Matthew 24:15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, SPOKEN OF BY DANIEL THE PROPHET, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand). Christ had confidence in Daniel the prophet. Here in this text, Jesus refers to one of Daniels prophecies. Because the Lord Himself endorsed Daniel and his prophecies, we today can also study them with confidence, knowing full well that they come from God. Daniel 8:12-14 : Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and HE CAST TRUTH DOWN TO THE GROUND. He did all this and prospered. Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who was speaking, How long will the vision be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot? And he said to me, FOR TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DAYS; THEN THE SANCTUARY SHALL BE CLEANSED.

In Daniel Chapter 8 is an interesting prophecy outlining the rise and fall of earthly powers. These are described in more detail in Chapters 2 and 7. In this chapter emphasis is given to the little horn power, which waxed exceeding great, and brought persecution to Gods people. This is explained more fully in another study. The question is asked, how long will the oppression last? How long will the sanctuary and the host be trodden underfoot? and the answer is clear 2,300 days then the sanctuary would be cleansed. The word cleansed in the margin is justified, indicating judgment.

Daniel 8:16,17: And I heard a mans voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, GABRIEL, MAKE THIS MAN UNDERSTAND THE VISION. So he came near where I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but he said to me, Understand, son of man, THAT THE VISION REFERS TO THE TIME OF THE END. The angel Gabriel is sent to make Daniel understand this vision of 2,300 days. Emphasis is made that the vision reaches right down to the end of time even our day.

Jesus said in Matt 24:15 that understanding Daniel would be important for the future.
Daniel 8:26,27: And the vision of the evenings and mornings which was told is true; therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to many days in the future. AND I, DANIEL, FAINTED AND WAS SICK for days; afterward I arose and went about the kings business. I WAS ASTONISHED BY THE VISION, BUT NO ONE UNDERSTOOD IT. Gabriel was unable to continue explanations concerning the vision, because Daniel took sick. All the previous prophecies in the book of Daniel had been explained. The only one left unexplained was the 2,300-day prophecy. Daniel 9:21-23: Yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I HAVE NOW COME FORTH TO GIVE YOU SKILL TO UNDERSTAND. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and UNDERSTAND THE VISION. Daniel had been praying earnestly, and in response Gabriel was sent to him to give him the understanding of the prophecy. Gabriel said, Consider the vision. Which vision? The only one left unexplained is the 2,300-day vision. Now Gabriel proceeds with the explanation. Daniel 9:24: SEVENTY WEEKS ARE DETERMINED FOR YOUR PEOPLE and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Seventy weeks of the 2,300 days are for Daniels people the Jews. God was giving them seventy weeks to repent and demonstrate their faithfulness. Ezekiel 4:6 And when you have completed them, lie again on your right side; then you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days. I HAVE LAID ON YOU A DAYFOR EACH YEAR.

In this prophecy concerning Israel, God used one day to represent one year. Numbers 14:34 uses the same principle. The day-for-a-year principle is also applied to this prophecy of Daniel. There is no doubt, when we see the accuracy of its fulfilment. Therefore, the 2,300 days = 2,300 years, and the 70 weeks = 490 years the 490 years being the first part of the 2,300 years. WHEN DOES THE GREAT TIME PROPHECY BEGIN? Daniel 9:25: Know therefore and understand, THAT FROM THE GOING FORTH OF THE COMMAND TO RESTORE AND BUILD JERUSALEM until MESSIAH the Prince, there shall be SEVEN WEEKS and SIXTY-TWO WEEKS; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. The prophecy begins when the decree to rebuild Jerusalem is passed. This was given by Artexerxes, King of Persia in 457 B.C. It is recorded in Ezra 7 and Ezra 6:14. The year 457 B.C. is also an established historical date. The 7 weeks and 62 weeks equal 483 prophetic days or 483 years. This means, counting ahead 483 years from 457 B.C. we are brought to the time of the Messiah, i.e. Jesus Christ. The date comes to 27 A.D. DID CHRIST BECOME THE MESSIAH IN THAT YEAR? Matthew 3:15,16 : But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw THE SPIRIT OF GOD DESCENDING LIKE A DOVE AND ALIGHTING UPON HIM. At the baptism of Jesus, He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. He was indeed the anointed one the Messiah. This took place at the beginning of His ministry, A.D. 27 right on time according to the prophecy. This prediction was made almost 500 years before it was fulfilled with amazing accuracy. Daniel 9:26,27: AND AFTER THE SIXTY-TWO WEEKS MESSIAH SHALL BE CUT OFF, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then HE SHALL CONFIRM A COVENANT WITH MANY FOR ONE WEEK; but IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK HE SHALL BRING AN END TO SACRIFICE AND OFFERING. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate. After A.D. 27 Jesus would be cut off or killed. The prophecy of the 490 years has accounted for 483 years so far, up to 27 A.D. Now verse 27 mentions the last week (i.e. 7 years). In these last 7 years, the Jews are given opportunity to repent and consecrate

themselves to God. However, we notice that the Messiah is cut off in the middle of the 7 years, that is 3 years after A.D. 27. This brings us to A.D. 31 the exact year Jesus was crucified. The prophecy is accurately fulfilled once more. Daniel also said in this verse that Jesus would cause the sacrifices to cease. He did this when He died as the One great Sacrifice for sins. Matthew 27:50,51: And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, THE VEIL OF THE TEMPLE WAS TORN IN TWO FROM TOP TO BOTTOM; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. No longer were animal sacrifices needed. The One great Sacrifice, Jesus, was the One all other sacrifices pointed to. He caused the sacrificial system to cease. Acts 7:58-60;8:1: And they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. AND THEY STONED STEPHEN as he was calling on God and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, Lord, do not charge them with this sin. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. The martyrdom of Stephen. A far deeper significance is attached to the stoning of Stephen than may appear to the casual reader. It clinches the former rejection of the Gospel by responsible Jewish leaders at Jerusalem (Acts 7:51-54). It precipitates a new era in Gospel expansion. Exclusive labour for Jews abruptly ceases. Christian witnesses, scattered by the sudden outburst of savage persecution, are impelled to evangelize the Gentiles. Samaritans and the Ethiopian eunuch are the first-fruits from among non-Jews (Acts 8:1,4,5,27,29). In the margin of Daniel 9:26 it reads, and the Jews, they shall be no more his people. After Jesus crucifixion, God mercifully gave them 3 more years to repent, but they did not. When Stephen was stoned in A.D. 34, the Jews were cut off from God as a nation. However, individual Jews were, and still are, welcome into the family of God if they wish to respond to Gods pleadings. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US. This is the most vital part of the prophecy. Christ became our sin-bearer. The guilt of our sins was placed upon Him and He died for us. It was all planned. He chose to die for all mankind. His death was necessary that we might have eternal life. His great disappointment was that his own received Him not. So far we have dealt with 490 years of the 2,300 years. That means there are 1810 years to account for. Adding on these 1810 years, we arrive at A.D. 1844. From this time we would expect, on the basis of this prophecy, to see a world-wide movement announcing the time of Gods judgment. In 1844 God started two great programs, one in heaven, the other in earth. Truth was restored after 1844 in the earth in heaven, the cleansing of the sanctuary.
