Development of editing styles

Lumiere brothers
The Lumiere brothers were the first people to make a moving image, they used no editing during there production they only used one long shot to make their film. Their films were based on actual events, for example a ship pulling into a harbour or a train passing by. Edwin S.Porter
Edwin S.Porter was considered to be the father of film editing. In 1903 he constructed a film telling a story through many shots. He was first to use editing to create a film from several shots taken instead of a stationary camera.

D.W.Griffith
Between 1875-1948 D.W.Griffith was an American film director, he is best known for creating a film that was said to be the most racist film ever made, this came across as Griffith portrayed African American men as unintelligent and sexually aggressive towards white woman. D.W.Griffith was the first to use a variation of shots including, close-up, medium shot, reaction shot, two-shot, eye line match, match on action, 180 rule, and reverse angle shot.

Sergei Eisenstein
Sergei Eisenstein was a Russian film director, he was known In the industry as the father of montage. He used editing montages to put across the feeling of false or negative sides of situations. He would use editing within montages to tell the audience incorrect information.

David Fincher
David Fincher is an American director known for his editing skills to make dark movies seem surreal, such as, seven, fight club, the game and most recently the girl with the dragon tattoo. He uses a particular lighting and editing techniques to create a feeling among the audience.

Editing styles have changed considerably since the Lumiere brothers started the moving image. Since then we have seen the editing skills of many artists each time creating something special with the way they edit. it has been shown that each year the editing gets stronger and more advanced.
