Presidents Report from Kristin Ballard This Weeks Report Our guest speaker last week was Gillian Kelly, the Curator at the Queanbeyan Museum. Gillians talk was very interesting and plans have been made to visit the Museum one night. In the last two weeks I have had discussions with Genevieve, our Assistant Governor, and Greg Hooper, President, Canberra East, which have included our participating in the Royal Canberra Show stall. Some other matters I will raise at the board meeting tonight. I have just received notice that the beautiful artwork that has been prepared for the Queanbeyan Hospital reflections room will be formally presented at 11am this Friday please let know if any of you can attend. Both the rosters for the Relay for Life and the Royal Canberra Show need to be finalised as soon as possible so if you are unable to be at the meeting tonight let me know what you are able to do. I look forward to seeing you at the Board meeting tonight there is much to discuss. Last Weeks Report Well a mix up happened last week so we had a good night with no speaker a noisy night as lots of other people in the dining room. Then we had dessert at Ronis place a great night all round (although I not sure her cat appreciated us). Angie Ballard continued on with the Summer Down Series in Sydney last week and managed another Personal Best time and more qualifiers for the London Paralympics starting 29 August 2012. At the Oz Day race at Circular Quay Angie managed a 3rd in the womens race very satisfying end to a big week. The Relay for Life is meeting every week now until showdown thanks particularly to Natalie for the effort she has been putting into it. Our Club will need all hands on deck if possible that weekend as we will be assisting with a barbeque as well.

Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) is an intensive and fun filled week-long program to help prepare young adults for full participation as citizens of Australia. Each year around 45 Year 11 students (the delegates) are sent by their local Rotary clubs to Canberra. They are taken out of their comfort zones into new places, set amongst new faces and asked to do new things. For a week, RAIC puts the delegates "inside" Canberra. Run in partnership with the Parliamentary Education Office, the delegates spend a lot of time inside Parliament House in areas not usually open to the public. They often have morning tea with the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. They view Question Time and are debriefed by a journalist from the Press Gallery. They learn the difference between a Bill and an Act. They participate in mock Parliamentary debates themselves. They experience the national institutions (War Memorial, Institute of Sport etc) in a way that is more revealing than the usual school excursion can provide. And most importantly, they meet and make friends with young people from all over Australia. Delegates from previous years have said this is one of the highlights of the RAIC program. RAIC 2012 will be held from Saturday May 5, 2012 to Saturday May 12, 2012. Applications will open on Monday 13 February, 2012 and close on Friday April 13, 2012 or sooner if all positions are filled. Visit http://www.raic.org.au/ for more details

Joke of the Week thanks Nerida for your contribution

Two Brooms Two brooms were hanging in the closet and after a while they got to know each other so well, they decided to get married. One broom was, of course, the bride broom, the other the groom broom. The bride broom looked very beautiful in her white dress. The groom broom was handsome and suave in his tuxedo. The wedding was lovely. After the wedding, at the wedding dinner, the bride-broom leaned over and said to the groom-broom, 'I think I am going to have a little broom!' 'IMPOSSIBLE!' said the groom broom. Are you ready for this? Brace yourself; this is going to hurt!!!!!! 'WE HAVEN'T EVEN SWEPT TOGETHER!' ................................... Oh for goodness sake... Laugh, or at least groan. Life's too short not to enjoy even these silly, little cute and clean jokes! Sounds to me like she's been sweeping around!

Brad Runs North

I am running 4000km from Canberra to Cape York and I am hoping to raise $10,000. Im very proud to be supporting AFFIRM: The Australian Foundation for Mental Health Research. With a degree in psychology, I am very aware of the reality of mental health issues in Australia. This reality entails one in five Australians suffering a mental illness in any given year. This is alarming and what is more so is the fact that around 60% suffer in silence, never seeking help. There is a stigma associated with mental illness which discourages people from seeking help from the community and those immediately around them. Indeed 21% of Australian adults are unwilling to work closely with an individual with depression, 30% of Australians would not vote for a Politician with depression, and 25% believe one can snap out of depression. In reality, in order to overcome mental illness, like any other illness, these people need the acceptance and support of their family, friends and the community at large. I am hoping to raise awareness of these issues and also to raise funds for AFFIRM to support mental health research. With the experience of growing up with a family member who unknowingly struggled with a mental illness for over a decade and finally overcame it when they did realise, the opportunity to raise funds and awareness for mental health also has a very personal touch for me. Its possible that someone close to you may also be suffering in silence. Making the first steps towards helping them is as simple as asking are you ok?. I wish I had have known that. If you are inspired in any way by what I am doing, please firstly do as I say- check that those around you are alright. That can make the biggest difference. Then if you would also like to help your community at large rather than just those immediately around you. The Australian Foundation for Mental Health Research would greatly appreciate a donation of any size. The knowledge that we gain from research will go a long way.
