For last weeks meeting we joined the Rotary Club of Bungendore to listen to Prof. Hans Bachor AM on Lasers Can Do Everything at the Council chambers in Bungendore. Hans gave us an easy to follow history of lasers and a very impressive display of the laser throughout his talk. I sure we all appreciated it. This week our meeting will be on Monday 19 March as a joint meeting with the Canberra East Club (at 6.00 for 6.30 pm at the Commonwealth Club, 25 Forster Cres, Yarralumla) for speaker Peter Reith, author on War History. District Assembly This is a reminder about the District Assembly scheduled for 21 & 22 April and that District Assembly is a great resource to expand Rotary knowledge as well as provide, hopefully, some guidance and learning for you and your incoming Boards for 2012-13. Where: When: To be held at the Canberra College in Phillip ACT To commence at 9.00am on Saturday 21 April with focus talks on Rotary programs. Assembly to commence at 12.40pm following lunch at 12.00 noon. Assembly is scheduled to conclude on Sunday 22 April at 1.00pm followed by a light lunch. A dinner is organised for Saturday 21 April and will be held at the Southern Cross Club cost $42 p.p.
Dinner:
While the program is not yet finalised some important presentations include insurance and the responsibilities of Club Boards in relation to insurance, planning for your Club through Visioning, E Club opportunities, Foundation Future Vision, and Child Protection requirements. We may also have an opportunity to improve your origami skills with a workshop on making peace cranes! Assembly is not just for incoming Boards but hopefully all Rotarians, and especially new Rotarians, will gain something from attendance at District Assembly and therefore I would encourage Members of your Club to register. Registration should be available shortly and can be made through the District website. Assembly is also an opportunity to mix with other Rotarians from around the District and exchange ideas, meet new friends, or just catch up with old ones. I also see it as an opportunity for me to meet more Rotarians from around District 9710 and to share Rotary International President Elect Tanakas theme for 2012-13 of Peace Through Service.

Millions of women and girls walk over six kilometres a day in search of food, water and firewood. This leaves little time for school, accessing health services and earning an income. CARE is a non-religious and non-political charity with a special focus on working with women and girls to create sustainable outcomes in poor communities. Elise Wilson is trying to raise $1000 by walking 10,000 steps per day from Monday 12 March to Sunday 18 March 2012 as part of CAREs Walk In Her Shoes challenge. Please sponsor her to help break this cycle of poverty. You can donate at In 2011, CARE assisted 122 million people across 84 countries through 1015 poverty-fighting projects. CARE Australia manages programs in over 20 countries in South-East Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

I returned from my normal round of golf late last Sunday and my wife asked me why I had been so long. "All was fine "I said "until at the 11th hole, Fred had a cardiac arrest and died on the spot." "That's terrible" my wife said. "No kidding. For the rest of the round it was a case of hit a shot, drag Fred, hit a shot, drag Fred".
