xpect to hear net zero more often in energy conversations. It is now possible to build a facility even a home that is so energy efficient it produces zero demand on the public electricity supply. Earlier in the year, a construction team dedicated to this kind of breakthrough opened the net-zero, Richardsville Elementary School in Lexington, Kentucky. All combined, the energy performance of this school is expected to surpass all expectations, says Todd Blyth, marketing manager at Nudura, the manufacturers of an advanced version of the insulated concrete form (ICF) used in the plan. In addition to replacing wood with our rock-solid walls, the rooftop solar panels cover 38,700 square feet and provide all of the schools electricity needs. Cut energy costs at home H

omeowners spend thousands of dollars per year on energy. Whether a home is big or small, energy costs are a concern for homeowners. Though some of the costs of home ownership are beyond a persons control, there are some steps homeowners can take to reduce energy costs and save substantial amounts of money as a result. Address any leaks. One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs is to weather strip doors and windows throughout the house. Doing so will keep warm air in the house when its cold and prevent drafts that occur when cold air enters the home through cracks and leaks. If a home has an attic, be sure to seal pipes, chimneys or ductwork. Addressing leaks can save homeowners as much as 10 percent on their annual home energy costs. Use compact fluorescent lightbulbs instead of incandescent lightbulbs. CFLs use one-quarter to one-third less energy than traditional incandescent lightbulbs. In addition, the Alliance to Save Energy notes that CFLs can last up to 10 times longer than traditional lightbulbs. Be mindful of the thermostat. Most homeowners and their families spend a good portion of their day out of the house. Home heating costs can be reduced by as much as 20 percent if homeowners simply lower the thermostat during the day by 10 F. For homeowners who feel they wont remember to do so on a regular basis, a programmable thermostat will do the job on its own. Lower water temperature. Lowering water temperature can also lead to substantial savings. Homeowners can save as much as five percent on their water bill by lowering the temperature on their water heater by as little as 10 F. When doing so, touch the outside of the water heater. If the outside is cold, the water heater has sufficient insulation If the water heater is hot to the touch, wrap a water heater jacket around it to increase efficiency. Replace older appliances. Older appliances, be it an older central air conditioning unit or an older water heater, often need to expend more energy than they did when they were new. Whats more, especially older appliances might not meet Energy Star standards, which can cost homeowners substantial amounts of money over the course of a year. Homeowners who replace such appliances might be eligible for tax credits when buying more energy efficient products. Addressing leaky doors and windows is an effective way that homeowners can cut energy costs around the house.

What is LEED?
The term LEED is often bandied about when conversations shift to the environment. A term used when discussing building certification, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is an internationally recognized green building certification system that was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council 12 years ago. The system provides building owners and those who operate businesses with a distinct framework of guidelines that identify practical and measurable green design, construction, operation, and maintenance solutions. In order to be fair, LEED uses a rating system that is developed through a collaboration by LEED committees. Committees are groups of volunteers who represent a variety of building and construction industry subsets. Some of the things that LEED will measure through its rating system include: energy and atmosphere solutions water efficiency sustainable sites selection sustainable materials and waste reduction indoor environmental quality Organizations that are seeking LEED certification for a building must earn a minimum number of points to reach certification. The maximum number of points offered is 110, which includes 10 bonus points. Most buildings are eligible for certification, but its best to check with the LEED Rating System Checklist and find out the requirements for a particular project. How to disinfect water

in the case of an emergency
hen a weather emergency occurs, the effects can prove devastating. Natural disasters like hurricanes have turned cities upside down, floods have caused the deaths of thousands and snowstorms have shut communities down for days. A weather emergency, be it a natural disaster or a heavy storm, can contaminate the local supply of drinking water and disrupt the wastewater disposal system. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, such a disruption or contamination can directly threaten a persons health. As a result, its important for individuals to know how to disinfect their drinking water should an emergency occur and the supply be at risk. The easiest way to avoid health issues that arise from a contaminated water supply is to keep plenty of bottled water on hand and use as drinking water and when cooking. So long as the bottled water has not been exposed to flood waters, it will be safe to drink. If an emergency strikes and you dont have any bottled water at home, dont panic. Boiling water can help make the water safe, killing most types of diseasecausing organisms that might be present. Boil water for one minute before allowing it cool and then store in containers for later use. In an emergency situation, the water could very well be cloudy. This is also not a cause for panic. Instead, filter the water through clean cloths, like coffee filters or just allow it to settle. When allowed to settle, chances are the cloudy water will clear up within minutes. Once it does, use the clear water when boiling.
If theres no means to boiling the water, you can use household bleach as a disinfectant. Bleach is effective at killing some, but not all, disease-causing organisms that might be in the water. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle before attempting to disinfect it. Once the water is clear, use this clear water for disinfection. When ready to disinfect the water, the EPA recommends adding 18 teaspoon (or roughly eight drops) of regular, unscented liquid household bleach for each gallon of water. Do not use non-chlorine bleach to disinfect water. Once added, stir the bleach and water mixture well, then let it stand for 30 minutes before use. Once disinfected, store the water in clean containers with covers. The treated water should have a slight odor of chlorine. If it does not, repeat the process and allow the water to stand for an additional 15 minutes. After this step, if the treated water exhibits a strong odor of chlorine or tastes strongly of chlorine, allow the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours or pour the water from one clean container to another several times. For those who rely on well water, in the case of a flood have the water tested and disinfected once the flood waters have receded. Should a weather emergency occur and the water supply be disrupted or contaminated, heed the advice of local health departments or public water systems.
