ISR IDU Standard I/O Modules: Ethernet

FE and over air gross bitrate
Support FE up to 155 Mbps

VLAN transparent, max packet size

VLAN packets are passed through without modification. Max packet size is 1536 bytes

QoS, Flow control and priority

QoS to monitor the quality of service. Flow control is supported in both full-duplex and half-duplex. Full-Duplex is implemented with respect for PAUSE packets as well as generation of PAUSE packets. Half-Duplex is implemented with back-pressure. Priority is supported based upon Ethernet switch capabilities.

ISR IDU (Standard I/O Module): Ethernet (continued)

Ingress / Egress rate setting options
The ISR IDU slows the egress from the Ethernet switch which will initiate flow-control via the front-panel ports. The scaling of Ethernet traffic will in effect limit the front-panel egress rate on the far end of the link.

Latency
One way latency 400 to 900 sec at 100 Mbps (depending on packet size). Longer latency at lower data rates. Latency is primarily a function of Switch implementation Framing Latency

Link capacity monitoring / packet monitoring

Link capacity is not variable, unless capacity is considered to be reduced when erroredseconds are occurring. No link capacity monitoring is available. Packet monitoring is provided in the form of Ethernet Switch Statistics (i.e. Tx Packets, Tx Bytes, Tx Errors, Rx Packets, Rx Bytes, Rx Errors).

ISR IDU 100 Plus Mbps Ethernet

Ethernet payload rates over 100 Mbps by utilizing both 100BaseTX payload ports Examples include 150 FE and 155 FE 2 Ethernet channels provisioned in the payload frame Maximum traffic rate for each channel to the framer is defined by the modes file Not permitted in 2+0 configuration

ISR IDU 100 Plus Mbps Ethernet Mode Network Operation

Provide access to 2 separate Fast Ethernet users Guarantee through-put level for each user Different rates for each port configured in modes file Each channel operates as a single channel would operate in a single port

ISR IDU 100 Plus Mbps Ethernet Mode Network Operation (continued)
Router

Allows transmission of data from a single network at a rate greater than 100 Mbps 150 Mbps Fast Ethernet 155 Mbps Fast Ethernet No changes in programming or operation of the ISR IDU External router is required to handle management of the trunk Router must ensure that the same MAC address is not delivered to both ports

Rate = X Mbps (100Base-TX)

Rate = X Mbps (100Base-TX)

Total Ethernet Payload Rate = 2*X Mbps

Rate = X Mbps (100Base-TX)

Rate = X Mbps (100Base-TX)

Wireless Link

ISR IDU 100 Mbps Ethernet Mode Latency

Latency is primarily a function of
Switch implementation Framing latency Modem Latency Interleaver FEC

The ISR interleaver depth is programmable Evaluated latency for interleaver depths of 2, 4, 8, 16 Various packet sizes from 64 to 1536 bytes Interleaver depth = 2 results in estimated performance degradation of approximately 1-2 dB
Further study may be conducted to evaluate performance

ISR IDU 100 Mbps Ethernet Mode: Latency

Topologies

ISR IDU: 1+1 Protection Diversity

Diversity mode: the link between each pair of modems is the same, providing complete redundancy This arrangement requires bandwidth for both links and noninterference between the links, but it provides hitless receive and transmit switching The ISR supports both frequency and space diversity
Frequency diversity: two frequencies are used Space diversity: two non-interfering paths are used

In either case, the proprietary framer chooses the best, error-free, data stream and forwards it to the Line Interface Units (LIUs)

Connected to west modem

Connected to west modem

Connected to east modem

Connected to east modem

ISR IDU: 1+1 Protection Non Diversity (Hot Stand-by)

Non-diversity mode: One ODU at each location transmits to both ODUs at the other location Does not require the extra bandwidth or interference protection of diversity mode Provides hitless receive switching and hot standby ISR IDU automatically switches transmit ODU upon appropriate ODU alarm or ODU interface error, minimizing transmit outage time The power supply, ODU, IF/telemetry and modem are protected The digital framing and LIUs are not protected

ISR IDU: 2+0 Ring or East/ West Configuration

Consecutive point architecture achieved with only a single 1U chassis at each location In this configuration the IDU contains 2 Power Supply Modules and 2 Modem/IF Modules One Modem/ IF is referred to as the west modem and the other as the east modem The IDU is connected to two ODUs, one broadcasting/ receiving in one direction of the ring architecture and the other broadcasting/ receiving in the other direction

Ring architecture provides selfhealing in the event of a link failure Ring architecture applies on both NMS and Payload Ethernet networks NMS can access any IDU LAN at each location may access other LANs or Internet Ring protection implemented with Spanning-Tree Protocol (IEEE 802.1d)

ISR IDU Installation Warnings

CAUTION: Do not operate units without an antenna, attenuator, or load connected to the antenna port. Damage may occur to the transmitter due to excessive reflected RF Energy. CAUTION: Always attenuate the signal into the receiver antenna port to less than 20 dBm. This will prevent overload and possible damage to the receiver. WARNING: High voltage is present inside the ODU and ISR IDU when the unit is plugged in. SAFETY REQUIREMENT: A switch must be employed between the ISR IDU external power supply and the ISR IDU power supplies.

ISR IDU Pre Installation

Back-to-back testing provides familiarity with the ISR IDU Required equipment Low-loss cables, TNC-male connectors on ODU interfaces Inline RF attenuators rated for ODU frequency, Four 40 dB or two 40dB and one 80 dB IDU and ODUs must be in an operational configuration

ISR RSL and Link Budget

The received signal level (RSL) can be estimated using the following: RSL (dBm) = PTX + GTX ANT LPath + GRX ANT PTX = transmitter output power (dBm) GTX ANT = transmit antenna gain (dB) GRX ANT = receive antenna gain (dB) LPath = path loss (dB) LPath = 36.6 + 20 log10 (F*D) F = frequency (MHz) D = path distance (miles) The expected RSL and measured RSL should be close ( 5 - 10 dB)

ISR Fade Margin Calculation

The fade margin is the difference between the actual received signal and the ISRs threshold, for the modulation mode selected Used to determine availability Should be at least 10 dB

ISR Availability Calculation

Availability of the microwave path predicts the percent of time that the link will operate without producing an excessive BER due to multipath fading Vigants Barnett Method Availability = 100 x (1 P) P = 2.5 x 10-9 x C x F x D3 x 10(-FM/10) F = Frequency (MHz) D = Distance (miles) FM = Fade Margin (dB) C = Climate/ Terrain Factor = 4 1 0.25 for Humid/ Over Water (worst case) for Average Conditions for Dry/ Mountains (best case)
