Community Music Victoria is having a makeover! The ink on the new CMVic logo is almost dry and were feeling pretty darned pleased with the new look. The familiar old image of the suzephone or trumpet as its always been thought of to this lazy brain, has done us proud but, well, to be honest we felt it was time for a change. Continue on page 2

Introducing the Logo
(continued form page 1) The methods and ways we all use to stay connected with each other have advanced immeasurably, fed by instantaneous streams of communication deliverable via screens where the visual appeal of whats being offered is paramount to the choices we make about whether or not to engage with it. If something isnt pleasingly presented its all too easy to move on fast and find an alternative that is. So, slightly perturbed by this thought, Community Music Victoria took a good long look at the image its been presenting to the world and set about polishing it up. The change isnt about branding or re-modeling our product but about remaining relevant and vibrant and visible. We wanted a contemporary and visually strong logo to work well on banners and on screens and on letterheads. A logo where the colours could be played with according to the context and a logo to reflect and represent the vitality and strength that we share with each other and our communities through music making. Using social media as a tool, we can inform, celebrate and promote the work of our existing state-wide community music makers and also support and connect with the new communities flourishing on line which often surpass traditional barriers such as demographics. This is partly why we felt it necessary to jazz ourselves up a bit, given that the scale of the playing field has, quite literally, gone global. It would be great to engage with other music making networks from around the world as part of this process. Who knows where it could all lead? A wealth of shared knowledge and experience through which we can all learn. By embracing and engaging with platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, Community Music Victoria can efficiently share information about where to go and how to find real people to connect and make music with as well as growing and developing our existing networks. The channels of communication that are evolving through technological development increase our sense of connectedness and potentially play a huge role in empowering and educating us. We should use these sound bites of single sentence exchanges and Facebook wall posts to increase the opportunities we create to meet up and share experiences, and not as a substitute for more extended and personal ways of staying in touch.

There are, of course, less positive aspects associated with keeping up with this constant exchange of information. Observe any group of people passing the time collectively in a queue or on a bus for example, and the chances are many of them will be checking updates and statuses or texting, which can reduce the opportunity they give themselves to connect with those around them. Its amazing that we can read the Twitter newsfeeds giving a voice to with whom we share the day to day. Sometimes all this information and stimulation can become too compelling to disconnect people repressed by dictatorial regimes, but its sad if we subsequently speak less to people from and we relinquish our ability to relax without distraction. At CMVic, we love the idea of using these forums to encourage people to turn away from technology once in a while, to switch off and go slow. Seize a moment to appreciate the beauty in the world without the impulse to capture and post it for everyone to comment on. Reflect on things for what they are. Feel the amazing sense of harmony and the sheer joyousness of joining a group of people to sing and to play instruments with, if possible in the same room or space. Those how to clips on Youtube make fantastic resources, but nothing beats experience of the real thing. And this is why the new logo is important. View it with a welcoming eye and consider it an anchor; a beacon of calmness, riding on the tide of communication to remind you to ease up for a while, smell the roses and re-connect in the traditional sense. Used well, social media can greatly enhance what we do at Community Music Victoria to support, promote and facilitate community music making and to carry our message far and wide. And from time to time well be encouraging you all to pull the plug! The avuncular old suzephone may have been retired but its affiliations with connection and community are being carried forward to new places in new ways. Everything the new logo represents remains the same and as essential to the equilibrium and well being of todays society today, as ever.
CMVic would like to thank Dina Theodoropoulos for her concepts and ideas in the early stages of developing the new logo and Ed Carveth for continuing them on to conceive the end result. Great job guys.

Tune Up Article for Shout!

One the high points on the CMVic calendar is the annual Tune Up weekend in November at the Edmund Rice Centre in Amberley, on the beautiful bush clad slopes of the Yarra River in Lower Plenty. The Tune Up weekend is when community music makers and activists from across the state come together to celebrate the strength and power of group music making, to share repertoire and resources and to develop their vision for the future of community music in Victoria. The weekend provides opportunities to participate in workshops, play and sing together in informal jam sessions and to share stories and experiences over the dinner table. The Tune Up weekend has also ensured that stronger networks and relationships are forged and that common values are developed and shared amongst Victorias community music makers. This years Tune Up is again being held at the Edmund Rice Centre on the weekend of November 9th to 11th. The emphasis this year will be on engaging young and emerging community music makers, marimbas, ukuleles and singing, men and community singing and developing a session culture. As with past events the workshops will be dynamic and stimulating and there will be plenty of opportunities for informal music making and walks along the Yarra through out the weekend. There will also be more affordable and flexible accommodation options for Tune Up this year, with the ability to camp and self cater. We have engaged our own caterer, which will mean lower catering costs while still maintaining quality meals. Making it count - Kwaya & the African Children's Choir

It surprises some people to find that I am a chorister. Of all the styles of music to partake in, what it is about choral music that wins me over? Ask any of the 50 or so people who will be travelling as part of KwaYa Australias tour to Uganda (September 22 - October 8) and youll get 50 different responses, but they all lead back to the common themes of community, teamwork, and working towards a common goal that none of us could achieve on our own. 12 months ago, if youd asked any of us if we could amass half a tonne of donated clothing and $110,000 in charity funds, wed have laughed it off. But, throw in the offer of self-funded travel to a third world nation, to engage in humanitarian activities, to recruit and work with the next generation of the African Childrens Choir and to use our voices to change the world (at least for the 20 orphans who have been drawn from the slums of Kampala and given a life and a future with the African Childrens Choir), and we wouldnt hesitate to get involved. Weve come from all across the country to take this journey. Some of us have been friends and singing together for nearly 20 years. Some of us have never sung in a choir before. Some of us can read and write music, some of us learn by ear, some of us have very limited abilities; but when we gather together to perform the music, the atmosphere transforms, and our voices unite to create a sound that can, and does, move people to tears. When we sing together, we become greater than the sum of our parts and what would otherwise be impossible can become a life-changing experience. And no matter how young or old, the spirit stays in you long after the last note is sung. I had the most fantastic time. People came from all over the country and we went from a bunch of relative strangers to a group who were so strongly bonded all in the space of a couple of days. It's amazing that sharing our voices and our love of music can create this bond in such a short time. I cant wait to sing with everyone again! TIME ON YOUR HANDS? If you can spare a couple of hours a week, Community Music Victoria needs you! Fancy volunteering a couple of hours on a Monday afternoon for this fantastic not for profit organisation? Community Music Victoria is based in an accessible building on bustling Flinders Lane where the coffee is good and the muffins are better! We are looking for a keen individual to be our media co-ordinator, 1.30-3.30pm on Mondays. It doesnt have to be first class filming worthy of Cannes, just a good steady take, even from an iphone, offering an insight into the great work being done using music to build and strengthen communities across Victoria. Alternatively, if youd be open to the idea of your group being filmed, wed love to hear from you about that, too.

CMV EMPLOYEE REGISTER From time to time CMV looks for people to take on occasional and temporary paid jobs. We want to make sure that people with a commitment to CMVs values and relevant skills are invited to apply for these positions. She co-directs the wonderful Community choir VoKallista She takes great delight in bringing a group of people together in singing in harmony. Kwaya Uganda with Dr Jonathon Welch AM April 6th - 20th 2013 Due to the enormous popularity of the Sept 2012 tour we are excited to announce the availability of 5 more places in April 2013. Kwaya Uganda 2013 is a project for self funded volunteers who wish to offer their talents and skills abroad whilst helping women and children in need at a grass roots level. We are seeking adventurers who are looking for a life-changing experience. Are you caring, flexible, humble, culturally sensitive and curious? The project is being made into a documentary for public viewing so you must also be comfortable having your face broadcast on television or the theatre. There are a total of 55 travellers. (40 singers and 10 helpers and production staff). We will be working in schools, doing some reno work in the slums, visiting orphanages, work shopping and singing with the kids of the African Children's Choir as well as performing across Kampala to enthusiastic audiences. The tour will culminate in major concert. This is an exciting charity project where singers get an opportunity to not only experience an unrivalled musical and cultural exchange, but make a lasting difference in the lives of our hosts. Faith, Hope and Justice - Saturday 17 November As part of the Harvestfest, Fay White will lead us in songs of in the Vocal Nosh style most of you are pretty familiar with in the auditorium at the Kyabram Fauna Park from noon. Beginning with a good sing, followed by a light lunch followed by another sing winding up around 2.30pm. Cost for the singing session is $10 per head. (The open air festival for the rest of the weekend is free to the public) Following the singing session with Fay you will be welcome to stay for the Saturday twilight music program beginning at 3pm and finishing up around 9pm. Some great artists, including Fay will perform on the open stage out in the lovely bush park in front of the Fauna Park. The program will be opened by an A-choired Taste of Gospel, a wonderful choir from down Bacchus Marsh way who were the popular opening act for the final Sunday last year. The program also includes other top artists presenting music from the gospel and christian tradition including folk and bluegrass gospel to contemporary. Saturday 13 October - Gippsland Acoustic Music Clubs Uke Muster III Ukulele Workshops 2pm to 7pm: Workshop for beginners Tim and Judy will have you playing songs within minutes. By the end of the workshop you will have learnt at least 2 songs and several chords and some strumming patterns. Tim has an advanced diploma in music, and is an accomplished singer/songwriter and performer. Judy is a well known singer and performer who has been assisting Barry to teach GAMCs ukulele classes throughout the year. In both workshops the emphasis will be on having fun. Workshop participants from both workshops will be asked to perform in the evening concert. Workshop for those that can play Barry and Lauren will teach those that can already play some chords and songs, some of the harder chords, some melody and riffs and some theory on chords and reading music and tabs. Barry is an experienced musician and performer and has been teaching uke and performance skills to more than 30 students through GAMCs uke program. Lauren is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Music Performance and is an accomplished jazz and classical musician playing mainly saxophone and clarinet, and of course the ukulele! Evening Concert: 7pm to 10pm The Concert will feature ukulele based acts such as GAMCs own Ukelicious, Melbourne Ukulele Kollective (MUK), Shaun and Wendy, and uRedwood. Experience the connections between voice, body, breath, listening, expressiveness and the imagination. Saturday 13 October - UKE MUSTER III Gippsland Acoustic Music Club Workshop for Beginners with Tim Woods and Judy Woods Tim and Judy will have you playing songs within minutes. By the end of the workshop you will have learnt at least 2 songs and several chords and some strumming patterns. Tim has an advanced diploma in music, and is an accomplished singer/songwriter and performer. Judy is a well known singer and performer who has been assisting Barry to teach GAMCs ukulele classes throughout the year. In both workshops the emphasis will be on having fun. Workshop participants from both workshops will be asked to perform in the evening concert. Workshop for those that can play with Barry Woods and Lauren Van Der Werff Barry and Lauren will teach those that can already play some chords and songs some of the harder chords, some melody and riffs and some theory on chords and reading music and tabs. Barry is an experienced musician and performer and has been teaching uke and performance skills to more than 30 students through GAMCs uke program. Lauren is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Music Performance and is an accomplished jazz and classical musician playing mainly saxophone and clarinet, and of course the ukulele! What to bring: A ukulele, a tuner if you have one, a music stand if you have one, a pen, and a smile. A&P Electronics and Dave Aumann All workshop participants will have the chance to win a ukulele kindly donated by A&P electronics. Dave Aumann is a respected instrument maker now specialising in ukuleles. A&P and Dave will set up stalls with a variety of musical goods. Dave and Mike from A&P will also give a short talk about their businesses. Dinner A variety of meals prepared by Andy and Ann-Marie Hammond will be available. The 18-member womens choir, led by conductor Bill Simmons, will present Isnt that Something? The Majellan Singers 21 Years, boasting a stunning program of classical and contemporary repertoire. In particular, the performance will feature songs from Johannes Brahms sublime Gesnge and from the extraordinary Choral Hymns for the Rig Veda by Gustav Holst; both compositions which showcase the beauty of the mature female voice. The soaring vocal lines will be complemented by harp accompaniment and, in the case of Gesnge, also by horns creating a truly transcendent soundscape. The second half of the program will comprise a number of shorter, light pieces of diverse mood and provenance, both a cappella and with piano accompaniment. The celebration will be enhanced when former members of The Majellan Singers including some founding members! join the choir on stage for some items. Diamond Valley Community Bank Vocal Eisteddfod - Tuesday 6th November First conducted in 1990, the Diamond Valley Bendigo Bank Vocal Eisteddfod is a small singing competition sponsored by the Diamond Creek Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. It consists of five open vocal sections: Aria, Ballad, Art Song, Musical Comedy and Novice. It is held on Melbourne Cup Day each year. The number performing in each section is restricted to 20, and entries are accepted in order of receipt.The competition takes place in All Saints Anglican Church, Greensborough. Caterers will provide lunch, dinner, morning and afternoon tea and supper for the convenience of competitors and audience. It is hoped that entrants will come and stay for the day and enjoy a friendly "relaxed" atmosphere (at a competition!). The adjudicator, accompanists and members of the committee will be joining competitors for the meals, so feel free to discuss any aspects of the competition or your crits. Don't ask why you didn't win - you might be told! Detailed criticisms will be provided by the adjudicator for competitors in each section. These will be available in the foyer at the conclusion of the section. There is no date for close of entries, however, entry numbers are limited to 20 in each section so register early to avoid disappointment as some sections fill very quickly. Save Orchestra Victoria The Symphony Orchestra Musicians Association (SOMA) have engaged in a campaign to secure the future of their organisation. Government funding reviews have meant that the orchestra is facing crisis, in the suggestion that there will be no permanent orchestra, with instead sporadic contracting and the predicted loss of 50-60 jobs. With the organisations central role in collaborating with the Australian Ballet, Australian Opera and Victoria Opera companies, the musicians fear these changes will influence the quality and future of their orchestra. Have a sing with the Brunswick Womens Choir Exciting new free on-line teaching resource now available for choirs and conductors. Made possible with funding from VicHealth, the Brunswick Women's Choir has produced a package of audio / visual and musical scores available on their website at www.brunswickwomenschoir.org.au Choirs and their conductors anywhere with access to a computer can learn three songs as if they were participating and present in a singing workshop. A highlight is the song Manubak Garra, composed by Lou Bennett for the choir, in which she teaches some of the words in her native aboriginal language, Yorta Yorta, and explains the context and meaning of this beautiful piece. Ukulele Books Trisha Scott and Bill Plant have taught hundreds of beginners to play the ukulele and have learnt a little about teaching along the way. They both sing and play a number of instruments and have been playing music for years. They spend a lot of time on the road, at festivals, playing and teaching music and jamming at every opportunity. Over time, the ukulele has become their favourite instrument. The songs include the best of Fay's commissioned works over the last decade of community arts events such as the songs written for the fire-ravaged community in the Grampians, songs from the land and life lived in Central Victoria.
