External Examiners

Comments
degree level is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The training and curriculum bridge the gap between architectural design and production, and provide a large number of qualified technologists for the building industry in Hong Kong. Having served as the external examiner of this programme for years, I have seen healthy progress and hard work from both the devoted academic staff and the students in pursuing quality education, and contributing towards the technical and technological aspects of architecture.

Comments from

Judge of the BuiltExpo

Mr Hermann FONG
Chairman, British Institute of Architectural Technologists (Hong Kong Centre)

As one of the Panel judges during the past three years, I found the
students to be well trained in the technical aspects of building design. Their final year projects illustrate their building knowledge, design abilities, manual and computer-aided drafting skills, and in particular, their presentation skills. They have also had the opportunity to appreciate the importance of teamwork in completing a project.

our Graduates

Mr Carlos Chung Yue LAU

Graduate of 1993, Project Architect at Andrew Lee King Fun & Associates

...... a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ~ Matthew 7:24 My time at CityU helped me build a strong foundation for my further studies and my career. I gained a comprehensive understanding of the rules to be followed in design. Instead of restricting my imagination, these rules let me experience real freedom in my work. All these add up to a good solid basis for my career development.

Ms Rosa CHAN
Graduate of 1998, First Class Honours, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, University of Greenwich, UK

Whilst at CityU, I gained loads of knowledge. The programme covers

almost every aspect of the industry, which I found very useful in architectural practice. We did a lot of presentations in the programme, which helped to build my communication skills and self-confidence. It also gave me opportunities to challenge my thinking, stretch my limits, and help me orient myself to reach higher ground.

After completing this programme, I went on to study abroad and continue my pursuit of further knowledge and architectural excellence.

Professional

Recognition
Our academic staff possess higher academic qualifications and substantial professional experience in building projects covering architectural and interior design, urban design, contract administration, and project co-ordination. Some are attached to architectural consultancies to keep abreast with the industrys practices, while others have won awards in design competitions, are authors of published journals and books, and are active members of the HKIA and BIAT.

One of the most important differences between ours and other similar programmes is that our programme is fully accredited by the British Institute of Architectural Technologists (BIAT). Our graduates are eligible to apply for full membership of the BIAT upon successful completion of one years post-qualification work experience, followed by a further two years to complete the Institutes Practice Qualification Log Book, which leads to the Assessment Interview.

Some of our graduates choose to complete their first degree in Hong Kong through our top-up degree programme (Bachelor in Built Environment) with the Queensland University of Technology (Australia). Successful graduates are able to further their studies in other Masters programmes. Some of our graduates decide to pursue further academic study in various building-related fields, such as surveying, construction management, landscape architecture and real estate. Others who have a strong interest in architecture have gone on to become registered architects and chartered professionals in the construction industry.
