IDEO Product Development

Merging design and innovativeness, IDEO was first established in 1991 and created a major impact in achieving new product development and strategy as a consulting farm. The founder of IDEO, was a student of Stanford University, first came up with a vision to fuse art and engineering to give a new dimension using product design and development. To improve in designing, engineering and technology; two companies ID Two and Matrix were merged with IDEO and started producing artistically product. For its concurrent engineering IDEO gets client from Apple Computer, AT&T, Samsung, Phillips and other high profile industrial sections. In earlier stage Kelly mainly focuses on designing and redesigning a product, workplace interactions and reviewing all completed projects. As a result IDEO was able to improve national revenue through better methodology and work environment. Frequent prototyping works as a catalyst for clients as they are able to imagine about their ongoing product. IDEO created those prototypes from available raw material as using sophisticated material considered as a waste of money and time. So to become innovative they followed three Rs Rough, Rapid and Right! and trial and error. They also followed effective brainstorming which is another key sessions for product development. During this session they mainly encouraged their employees to think about wide ideas but clearly focus on actual topics. They also kept their rejected ideas for future idea generation. Generally when IDEO starts a project they mainly focus on some points: 1. 2. 3. 4. Estimate cost and time according to their innovative ideas and concepts, Extra time and cost management for perfection in design, Give freedom in work as it creates potentiality among employees, Reward for High performing employees.

Comparing with other companies IDEO has almost 300 employees which they divided into small groups to get a better output from each section. Each of these group members is influenced by their management to design their work environment to show their personality. IDEOs Innovation Process: Phase 0 (Understand/Observe): In this stage the team understands the clients business, feasibility of the product, consumer opinion. Phase 1 (Visualize/Realize): Gather ideas and available technologies, search current market status.

Phase 2(Evaluating/Refining): Enhanced design prototypes, emphasis shifts from human factors and ergonomics to engineering. Phase 3(Implement/Detailed Engineering): Team verified the final product design and also works on low level improvement. Phase 4 (implement/manufactured Liaison): Ensured smooth product release, product move from the shop floor to the clients factory line. The Palm V project: Early 90s Palm Pilot becomes the most and fastest selling computer product due to its portability and immediate customer acceptances. It was also added some feature like vibrating alarms, voice recording, increased memory which attract male users. As other companies tried to compete with Palm Company, they came to IDEO to help them for more market share. To fulfill this mission a senior project leader Boyle from IDEO came up with new concept to make this Palm smaller and more attractive to the female customer. They started work on Palm V project using their companys innovation process .At phase 0; the team investigates the common problems such as rigidity, battery and memory placement. Phase 1, the design engineers started working on aesthetic feature of the Palm. They introduced curvy edges and more lightful color which can attract more female customers. They also changed the traditional battery with the lithium Ion battery. In the Phase 2, the made their design more accurate and precise using CAD software. To enhance binding features they used industrial glue instead of bothersome screw in phase 3.In Phase 4 they released the product, Razor and started to give customer services. The Handspring Project: The client, Handspring, is looking for Visor Product which will compete with 3Coms Palm They are actually looking for more smaller and less expensive product than Palm V. But Handspring gives less time to put their product into the market, as a result IDEO will need to sacrifice some proven development process. Furthermore Handspring wants some new feature in to their Visor .According to previous analysis it is clear that Handspring wants a revolution by introducing new applications and reduce price. According to IDEO strategy as Visor wants a valued product, they should allow more time to IDEO. If IDEO gets more time they can follow their innovation process correctly which will enhance market value for the product. When a product gets reasonable amount of time to research it will create a good engineering value to the customer.Becuase without proper market study it will not be a good outcome for the Handspring. So a longer period is necessary for the Visor not only to compete with 3Coms Palm V also to hold the major market share.
