Module 4: Employee Productivity: Meaning and importance: Productivity and production terms are often used interchangeably, but

there is a slight difference between the two. Production often refers to the total output whereas the productivity refers to the output relative to the inputs. Clearly stating productivity refers to the amount of goods and services produced with the resources used. Productivity=Quantity of goods and services produces/Amount of resources used As the equation indicates there are two variables in measuring the productivity. the amount of production and the amount of resources used Measuring Productivity: Working Conditions: Working conditions are an important part of job design Various factors which affect the working conditions of an organization are as follows Temperature and humidity Ventilation Illumination Noise and vibrations Break frequency Safety

Work Analysis: (work study) This is the discipline of industrial engineering that uses various techniques to quantitavively measure the work to increase the amount produced from a given quantity of resources by improving the use of existing resources Objectives: To analyse the present method of doing work To measure the work content of the job by measuring the time required to do the job To increase the productivity by improving the usage of existing resources To improve operational efficiency

Advabtages: Increased productivity and increased operational efficiency Reduced manufacturing costs

Improved workplace layout Better manpower planning and capacity planning Fair wages to employees Better working conditions Improved work flow Educed material handling costs Better industrial relations and employee morale

Procedure: There are eight basic steps involced in work study process 1. Select the job to be studied 2. Record all the facts about the jobusing suitable charting techniques such as operation process chart, flow process chart etc 3. Examine critically all recorded facts (purpose?, place?, sequence?) 4. Develop new method gor job or operation 5. Measure the wirk content and establish the standard time using an appropriate work measurement technique time study , synthesis method etc 6. Define the new method for job 7. Install the new method as standard method 8. Maintain the new method of ding the job Method Study: It is a scientific technique of observing ,recording and critically examining the present method of doing the job with the aim of improving the present method and developing a new and a cheaper method of doing the work Also known as work improvement or methods improvement Objectives: Study the existing method of doing the work To develop an improved method of doing the work To improve productivity and operational efficiency To eliminate wasteful and inefficient motions

Advantages: Work simplification Improved work method Better product quality Improved work place layout Improved equipment design Improved work flow Better working conditions Better utilization of resources

Shorter production cycle time

Factors facilitating method study: High operating cost High wastage and scrap Excessive movement of materials and workmen Excessive production bottlenecks Excessive rejection and rework Complaints about quality Increased number of accidents

Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Select Record Examine Develop Install Maintain

Charts or Recording techniques (given in the class) Work Measurement: The process of determining the time duration of the job. It is concerned with determining the length of time it should take to complete the job Standard Time: It is the amount of time which a qualified worker should take to complete the given task under sustainable rate and using given methods , tools and equipment.
