The James Bond franchise has been going strong for decades, and has always been box office gold. The newest James Bond, blonde hunk Daniel Craig, is managing to rake in the dough faster that you can say shaken, not stirred. The rejuvenation of this borderline dated series for modern audiences was risky; a blonde, rough and tumble looking bond, more action, more blood, more sex, more of everything they may have been afraid to show us before. James Bond, of course, has always been about sex. The philandering international man of mystery is hard pressed not to sleep with every woman that crosses his path. This Bond, however, is far less discrete. Bond always had car chases, but none this high octane, none so destruc-

tive. Bond has always known his way around a gun, but never have I seen him go on murderous rampages based solely on ego, revenge and, yes, love. This is the new Bond. The new Bond is much more to my liking, to be honest. I like my heroes dirty. I like em flawed. Make them cold-blooded killers too, thats always a plus. The Bond we meet in this second of Craigs Bonds is a conflicted, disturbed and dark man tailor made for the 20- to 30-something audience its aimed at.
Quantum of Solace is a continuation of the story from Casino Royale. Bond, hell bent of revenging the death of his love Vesper (Eva Green), is searching for the man responsible for the mysterious agency that blackmailed Vesper into betraying him and killing herself. Unfortunately for him, there are many powers trying to keep him from taking matters into his own hands. When M (Judi Dench) calls 007 off the case, he goes rogue and risks his career. With the help of Bond girl Camille (Olga Kurylenko), he uncovers a complex conspiracy that involves one of the biggest environmental activists and fuel companies of the world. Penned by Canadian Paul Haggis (CRASH, Letters From Iwo Jima), and directed by Marc Forster (Stranger Than Fiction, The Kite Runner), the talent behind the camera is definitely present.

After suffering a 12-3 loss to the Gloucester Rangers on Sunday, the Kanata Stallions bounced back with a convincing 8-2 win over the same Gloucester team on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the KRC. The Stallions took the game to Rangers for 60 minutes, scoring just 33 seconds into the first period, and racking up a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes. Kanata head coach Justin Nistico said Tuesdays big win was well-deserved. We were skating hard tonight, he said. I think that was the best game Ive seen (Shayne) Thompson play in the four years Ive been here. Thompson picked up two goals and an assist in the games first period, and added an assist in the third frame for a four-point night. Brandon Timm also had four points (1G, 3A), and three players had three-point games: Kyle Fletcher, Brent Bourgeois and Chris Martin. We didnt change anything (between Sunday and Tuesday), Thompson said. We just worked hard at practice.

Creppin picked up a hat-trick, and Kanata starting goalkeeper Christian Mastromattei was chased from the net after giving up seven goals. Nistico said the 12-3 scoreline didnt provide an accurate guage of the Stallions efforts. We outshot them (42-41), we only took one penalty, and all four of our centres were over 50 per cent on faceoffs, he said, adding Tuesdays game was much different in one respect: We got saves tonight. Nistico said hes happy with his teams overall play, and the Stallions now sit slightly over .500, with 27 points from 26 games (12 wins, three overtime or shootout losses, and 11 losses). I think the guys are buying in, and like the offensive outlook, he said, alluding to his philosophy since taking over the head coaching job earlier this season. Theres not as much pressure about making mistakes. Kanata's David Borden flips the puck up ice to avoid a Gloucester checker during Tuesday's Central Junior Hockey League game at the KRC. The Stallions bounced back from a 12-3 loss on Sunday to defeat Gloucester 8-2. Kanata dominated at both ends of the ice on Tuesday night, with a sparkling forecheck that prevented Rangers defencemen from making decent first passes. When Gloucester did manage to enter the Stallions zone, shooters were kept well away from Stallions netminder Stephane Cesar. When Kanata forwards got the puck, they sprinted away to create odd-man rushes on the beleagured Rangers blueliners. And things only got tougher for the visitors as the Kanata lead grew. The Stallions scored from all angles: point shots, short-range and even from behind the net. Dave Borden recently added from Jr. B Perth managed the latter, bouncing the puck into the Gloucester cage off the back of netminder Francis Dupuis for Kanatas fifth goal. Dupuis, who looked shaky even when he managed to keep pucks out of his net, was replaced after giving up five goals on 21 shots. The loss in Gloucester came about in a steady flow. The Rangers scored four goals in each period while the Stallions got one goal per frame. Gloucesters Andrew NEXT UP The Stallions will have a chance to add four points this weekend when they play the leagues two weakest clubs. Kanata visits Hawkesbury tonight, Nov. 21, and will be in Kemptville on Sunday, Nov. 23. The next home game at the KRC is Tuesday, Nov. 25, when the Cornwall Colts visit at 7:30 p.m.

As the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs slouch around the NHLs basement, the Central Junior Hockey League has a plan to spark a new Battle of Ontario. CJHL clubs including the Kanata Stallions will provide the manpower for two games in the first Junior A Hockey Challenge, to be held Jan. 17 in Pembroke. One squad will be made up of 16- and 17-year-olds, and the other will feature those 18 to 20. The CJHL all-stars will face off against the best players from eight Ontario Junior Hockey League clubs: the St. Michaels Buzzers, Toronto Canadiens, Newmarket Hurricanes, Hamilton Red Wings, Stouffville Spirit, Cobourg Cougars, M a r k h a m Wa x e r s a n d Wellington Dukes.
Lou Nistico. We have to look for balance, Nistico said earlier this week, adding the games wont be no-hitting, all-offensive matches. We dont want to lose. DECISIONS, DECISIONS Nistico said much of the team has already been decided, but Keefe will have some input on the last few names on the bubble. He wouldnt share any selections prior to the official announcement next month, but smiled when asked if any Stallions would make the team. I would say yes, he said. Tickets for each game are $10 for adults, with a $15 two-game ticket package available. Tickets are on sale at Stallions home games. The league expects to sell out the Pembroke Memorial Centre, and also hopes to make the new Battle of Ontario an annual clash.
LOU NISTICO An afternoon match with the young 16- and 17year-old prospects in the respective leagues will give scouts from the Canadian Hockey League, NCAA and National Hockey League an opportunity to see all-star players in a competitive setting. The evening game is for the best 18- to 20year-old players. The head coach of the senior CJHL all-star team is Pembroke coach Sheldon Keefe. The squad will be managed by Stallions GM
The Kanata major atom A Blazers celebrate their title win at the 24th annual Pembroke Regional Silver Stick Hockey Tournament.
The Kanata Blazers, major atom A hockey team, travelled to Pembroke over the Nov.7 weekend to compete in the 24th annual Pembroke Regional Silver Stick Hockey Tournament, which decides the team that will play in Sarnia, Ont., in January. The team of went through to the finals undefeated, with three straight shutouts. Kanata faced the Ottawa Sting in the
semifinal. The fast-flying forwards and quick defence were backed by incredible goaltending. Kanata defeated the Sting by a score of 5-1 and the Blazers headed to the Silver Stick final. The exciting finale featured the Blazers and the Cobourg Jr. Cougars. A Kanata goal late in the second period was the difference, and an empty-net goal sealed the deal for the Blazers.

Nahedh ElRayes of Kanata was 10 years old when he first read Deborah Ellis controversial book Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak. He was so touched by the stories of children his own age, living in a conflict zone, that he decided to deliver a speech about it to his fellow students at Jack Donohue Public School for a speaking contest. Two years later, much to his joy, Nahedh was cast to play the role of a Jewish teenager in a play based on Ellis book. Nahedh is a Palestinian Canadian with strong ties to his heritage and his grandparents who live under Israeli military siege in the Gaza Strip yet he says he is able to relate to Artov, finding common ground and connecting teenager to teenager. The production puts the spotlight on three Palestinian stories and three Israeli stories. The play is performed on a split stage divided by a wall. Nahedh plays the role of Artov, a Jewish teenager whose family has immigrated to Israel from Russia and who is struggling to understand the meaning of being Jewish and being connected to the state of Israel. On the other side of the wall is a Palestinian teenager who lives in a refugee camp in the West Bank. Seventeen-year-old Olivia Clarke, a Grade 12 student at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, plays the role of Talia, a Jewish girl who lives the life of a normal teen but is constantly under the shadow of terror. On the other side of the wall is Wafa, a Palestinian girl whose home has been demolished by the Israeli government several times leaving her and her family the challenge of having to reconstruct their lives time and again under
Israeli military rule. It just seemed like such a great opportunity, says Clarke. I really thought that the script was excellent which definitely motivated me during the audition. Clarke was only vaguely aware of the Israeli Palestinian conflict before joining the play. Ive learned a lot about the people that live there, she says. When we say our lines we are told to think about the motivation and feeling behind every line, doing this really helped me learn about the how these people must feel. It really hit me the other day: Im not just playing a character in a play. Talia is a real person.

Realizing that just made everything seem so much more real. Nahedh and Clarke are just two of the six young teens who play lead roles in this large production. The multi-faith cast consists of 32 actors from diverse backgrounds including Arab and Jewish. The play, sponsored by the Arab-Jewish dialogue group Potlucks for Peace, runs from Dec. 2 to 13 at the Gladstone Theatre. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 613 233-4523. After a side splitting farce that left audiences with sore cheekbones, Kanata Theatre will be tugging at the old heart strings as it delves into the intricacies of madness and exposes a touching and tender love story in its next production. The Countess, written by Gregory Murphy and Directed by Gwen Knight, is based on the true life story of the distinguished and highly principled Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his delightful and popular wife Effie. The play, set in London in 1853, revolves around Ruskins sexual and mental obsessions. Ruskin projects his fixations onto his naive wife and little by little she begins to believe his accusations, sending herself into a state of quiet madness. To try to prove that is wife is a sexual deviant, Ruskin purposely compromises the rules of their marriage by leaving his young wife alone in the company of a renowned young painter called John Everett Millais, knowing full well the implications of impropriety. As Ruskins neurosis grows, so does Effies resentment toward him. She is caught in a place between one mans true and genuine love for her, and another mans hatred. It becomes so overwhelming that it is suffocating for the poor woman. Effie must decide which way her life will turn. The Countess is based on the letters and journals belonging to John Ruskin and John Everett Millais that were found in the Bowerswell Papers at the Pierpoint Morgan Library in New York. Research was also accumulated for the play by the countless books and articles dedicated to the subject matter. The Countess runs until tomorrow, Nov. 22. Tickets are $15 each and curtain is at 8 p.m. sharp. Advance tickets can be purchased from the Ron Maslin box office, 1 Ron Maslin Way, just off Terry Fox Drive. By Rob Brodie OttawaSenators.com There are few sure things when it comes to mining good hockey talent. But its in the chase that Brent Flahr nds a lot of his enjoyment and greatest satisfaction as the Ottawa Senators director of hockey operations. The 34-year-old native of Courtenay, B.C., works closely with general manager Bryan Murray and assistant GM Tim Murray, and oversees the Senators scouting staff at both the pro and amateur levels. Hes also Tim Murrays right-hand man with the Senators American Hockey League afliate in Binghamton, N.Y. For a guy whos had a true passion for the game since he rst started playing minor hockey on Vancouver Island, its the greatest of gigs. Flahr is in his second full campaign with the Senators after spending seven seasons with the Florida Panthers organization (1996-2003), followed by four years as a Vancouver-based amateur scout with the Anaheim Ducks. Hes worked with Bryan Murray at every stop along the way. I love the game and the people in the game are good, said Flahr. Its a challenge every year. I was lucky enough to (be part of) a Cup winner (in 2007) in Anaheim when I was there it was an unbelievable feeling. Its the goal every year and only one team can win. But its fun chasing it and if you love the game, its a great job. Flahr played four years of U.S. college hockey at Princeton University but, unlike a lot of his classmates, didnt dream of a career in high nance. Its a liberal arts school, so most of the people there are going to Wall Street or that kind of thing, said Flahr, who resides in Kanata with his wife, Dana. Im a small-town B.C. kid so New York City. I like vis-
iting but I didnt have a lot of interest in living there. I went a different route. That path has taken him to arenas around the globe, honing an eye for talent that hell tell you didnt arrive overnight. You have to work at it, he said. Its not like you just step in and (know it). You learn every day. Some guys have an eye for it and some guys dont. Ive learned a lot working with Bryan and Tim. Its a process when you start amateur scouting. You look at where some of these players are four years later, and its not a perfect science, thats for sure. Anybody that tells you theyre 100 per cent right all the time is wrong. But its a lot of fun. Flahr calls scouting kind of an art form. Its a lot of projecting and sometimes luck, but you just hope you draft good kids that are willing to work hard at their game. Thats half the battle.
