NOTE FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
Each year, SKETCHBOOK evolves, changes, and morphs into a new entity. This year’s
festival has many new and exciting elements. For the first time, this year’s festival has a
theme: New American Fable. The SKETCHBOOK artists’ responses to this theme represent
the breadth of what it means to be American in these unique times of crisis and hope.

We are also excited to introduce the Devised Work category into this year’s festival. These
pieces depart from the traditional method of making a play, where a playwright writes a
play by her/himself and hands it over to a director and actors. Instead, devised work starts
with a vision and is developed collaboratively through the rehearsal process. Half of the
SKETCHBOOK pieces were created using this model, and their inclusion has instilled a
deep sense of risk and experimentation into the festival.

We also are also collaborating with 14 photographers who have each been paired with
a piece from the festival as inspiration for creating new images. They are also pulling
photographs from their existing portfolios and generating responses to the New American
Fable theme. Their work can be seen throughout the space via video and mounted prints.
This year’s environment mixes staging and seating areas, blurring the line between artists
and audience and creating the ultimate storytelling arena. With our BYOB policy and fluid
landscape, we want to give you an experience where you can be completely immersed by
the work of over 200 artists while enjoying the social nature of the Festival.

In January of 2000, the first annual SKETCHBOOK Festival was created in hope of
developing a space for theatre artists and audiences through new work, multi-media
collaboration and a sense of celebration and exploration concerning what it means to be
alive today. Nine years, 60,000 audience members and 138 short plays later, this remains at
the core of the festival, which has since distinguished itself as a 21st century Chicago theatre
tradition and one of the top short plays festivals in the country. But for all the blood, sweat,
smoke and mirrors that is SKETCHBOOK, it would be nothing without you, our diverse and
enthusiastic audience. Thank you for completing the circle and driving us to our best.

patient, asking how pain is manifested, endured,

video to explore the dance between the dentist

if it happens? A casual visit takes a turn for
the worst as three characters recycle the
past through a present day encounter with
a bowl a fruit. Using a mix of music, live and
pre-recorded citrus and living performers,
“The Gist” will tell and retell and retell what
happens when the details of candor are
better left unsaid.

Embracing sculptural aesthetics rather


than dramatic conventions, Kattywampus
is a hybrid of art, theater and dance. In a
world where everything is askew and heads
are way too large, the dysmorphic hero
wonders why he is the way he is; and why
the way he is wrong.

Inspired by (and with a live performance of) Lhasa de Sela’s song “De Cara a la Pared,” this fable
is about a woman in the moments leading up to and immediately following her death. As she is
aided into her transition by three women, her life starts to flash before her eyes, and the images and
memories she has carried with her come to life.

A man adrift in an orbiting space lab


conducts experiments on unknown alien
plant life. Over time he loses control of his
pristine scientific habitat as the life form
he once controlled grows unstable and
unstoppable. Using mime with live music
and original sound, a dark and humorous
story of losing control is unraveled.

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS
An ensemble of 14 photographers will document the Sketchbook experience from the beginning
to the end. Each photographer has been paired with one of the new works to design a photo to
represent its world premiere. Using each image, along with a New American Fable image from their
personal portfolio, the photos will be incorporated into the video design of this year’s festival. The
photographers will be on site throughout the run to capture the individuality of each evening and each
audience, so keep checking back for more photographs as the festival continues!

ARTIST BIOS
The Plays
Jennifer Barclay (playwright, Constriction) is thrilled to be a part of this year’s
Sketchbook. Her plays have been produced and/or developed at Steppenwolf, The International
Theatre of Vienna, Edinburgh Fringe, Piven, Remy Bumppo, Teatro Vista, Stage Left and American
Theatre Company, among others. As an actress, Jennifer has performed in Austria, Scotland,
California, New York, and Chicago. Residencies: Hawthornden International Writers Retreat
(Scotland), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Awards: Kennedy Center National Science Playwriting
Award second place, Final Draft Big Break semi-finalist, Princess Grace finalist, Pinter Review Gold
Medal, San Francisco Fringe Best Dramatic Solo, Northwestern’s Mary Margaret Linn Theatre
Award. Jennifer is a graduate of Northwestern University and will graduate in June with her MFA in
Playwriting from UC San Diego.

Brian Bell (director, The Dreaded Zepplin) is excited to be directing for the Sketchbook
Festival, and to be working with such incredibly fun material. Texan by birth, Chicagoan by choice,
Brian has also staged multiple productions in Berlin where he lived and worked for two years. In
Chicago Brian has worked with Lincoln Square Theatre, Darknight Productions and Adventure Stage
where he is an ensemble member. He is also a cofounder of Cabaret Vagabond-DAS IST KUNST!

Beatrice Bosco (director, Pseudoephedrine) is a theater director, educator, and scholar,


and is currently the Associate Director of Education at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and teaches at
DePaul University. In Chicago, she has directed at Stage Left Theatre, A Red Orchid Theatre, Scrap
Mettle SOUL, Lakeside Shakespeare, Estrogen Fest, Rhino Fest and 2nd Story. A Company Associate
at Collaboraction, she directed Eric Ziegenhagen’s On Air for Sketchbook 4 and Theresa Rebeck’s
How We Get to Where We’re Going for Sketchbook 6.

Devon de Mayo (director, Constriction) is a founder and associate artistic director of Dog
& Pony. She recently co-directed The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler and devised and co-
directed As Told by the Vivian Girls for D&P. Directing credits include shows with Dog & Pony, 2nd
Story, Cherubs (National High School Institute), Northlight Theatre Academy, and theatres in London,
Bali and Ohio. She’s assistant directed at Steppenwolf, Northlight and Mary-Arrchie. She studied
directing at Middlesex University in London, the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow
and the Indonesian Institute for the Arts in Bali. Thank you to Seth, Jennifer Barclay and my awesome
cast!

Mark Fleischer (director, Kid) Sketchbook 9 is Mark’s second time directing for the festival.
In 2007 he directed Stephen Cone’s We Came Here Because it was Beautiful. Mark has developed
new works at Chicago Dramatists, Plano Repertory Theatre, Victory Gardens, Pegasus Theatre,
Collaboraction, and Teatro Vista. Favorite productions include David Harrower’s Blackbird, Neil LaBute’s
Bash, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. From 1994 – 2001 Mark served as the Artistic Director of Plano
Repertory Theatre in suburban Dallas. In 2007 Mark assumed the leadership of the Adirondak Theatre
Festival (ATF) in Glens Falls, New York. His next projects are Ordinary Days, a new musical by Adam
Gwon, and a workshop of Brush the Summer By by Hal Corley, both for ATF. Mark holds an MFA in
Directing from the Theatre School at DePaul University and a BA from Austin College.

Sean Graney (playwright, What I Am Supposed to Be) is proud to participate in his 7th
Sketchbook. He is the Artistic Director and Founder of the Chicago company The Hypocrites. As
a playwright, Sean has received productions of The 4th Graders Present an Unnamed Suicide;
Autophagy; Porno. He received a commission from The Goodman to write Without. As a director,
Sean has directed over 30 productions since 1997 and was a participant in the NEA/TCG Career
Development Program for Directors from 2004/6. He won two Joseph Jefferson Citations for
Outstanding Direction for Equus and Machinal. In 2004, Chicago Magazine identified him as Chicago’s
Best Avant-garde Director. Upcoming projects include The Mystery of Irma Vep at Court Theatre and A
Hundred Dresses at Chicago Children’s Theatre. If you have any questions for Sean, please feel free to

Sarah Hammond (playwright, Who Put the Dead Bird in my Mailbox?) The daughter of
journalists, Sarah grew up in Hong Kong, Belgium, and South Carolina. Honors include the Heideman
Award, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a commission from South Coast Repertory Theatre, and a
residency at the Royal National Theatre in London. Her plays have been seen on stage at Trustus
Theatre (SC), Live Girls (Seattle), Ars Nova’s Out Loud Series, the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, the
Summer Play Festival, Australia’s Interplay Festival and the Undergroundzero Festival in Germany.
Her short plays have been seen at the Hangar Theatre, City Theatre (Miami), the Actors Theatre of
Louisville, in print in Ten Minute Plays for 2 Actors: the Best of 2004 and at Playscripts Inc. She is a
resident playwright at New Dramatists.

Karen Kessler (director, Who Put the Dead Bird in my Mailbox?) is very happy to be
working on Sketchbook with Collaboraction while she is simultaneously directing Pumpgirl by Irish
playwright Abbie Spallen for A Red Orchid Theatre – where she is a proud ensemble member. For
Red Orchid, Karen has directed Blasted by Sarah Kane, Gagarin Way by Gregory Burke and Mr. Kolpert
by David Gieselmann. In May, she will return to the Illinois Shakespeare Festival to direct Bill Irwin’s
adaptation of Moliere’s Scapin. Other credits include: War by Roddy Doyle, Sam Shepard’s The God
of Hell; The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek by Naomi Wallace, David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross for
the Northern Stage Ensemble in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; and Measure for Measure, Macbeth
(twice!), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, All’s Well That Ends Well, and Hamlet
at a bunch of different and very cool theatres.

Chelsea M. Marcantel (playwright, Beatrice & Beau) was born, raised, and very well fed
in south Louisiana; she received two BAs and a Master’s from LSU. In Chicago, Chelsea has worked
with the Mercury Theatre (Transference), Bailiwick Director’s Festival (Open), The Hypocrites (Mud,
Threepenny Opera), and The Side Project (Cut to the Quick Festival Fall 08/Spring 09). Her original
plays The Tiniest Sound in Recorded History and Round Earth’s Imagined Corners have been produced
by R7Co, of which she was a founding member. Chelsea has two current projects: STUNT, an original
one-act, and Demons and Monsters, which she directed. You can catch both at The Side Project right

William Nedved’s (playwright, Kid) play, The Saved, was a finalist for the Actors Theatre of
Louisville Ten-Minute Play Festival. Fate, an original musical, was awarded the first-ever Leonard
Bernstein ‘Learning Through The Arts’ Interdisciplinary Scholarship. Full-length works include A Young
Man in Pieces, County Fair (The Gift), The Three-Way (The Gift Sydney), The Two of You (The University
of Iowa), and See Through You (Nuffield Theatre, England). He received a Ragdale Foundation
residence, and a Community Arts Assistance grant from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
Nedved holds an MA in Theatre Studies from the University of New South Wales – Sydney, and is
completing his MFA in Film and Television Writing at the University of Southern California. Prior to
attending USC, he was the Publicist for Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Brandon Ray (director, Beatrice & Beau) was Artistic Director of Chicago’s New Leaf Theatre
from 2003 to 2007, where he directed As It Is In Heaven and the US Premiere of David Hare’s The
Permanent Way, both of which were nominated for Jeff citations for Best Ensemble. Most recently, he
directed Three Hymns of Apathy for the side project’s “Cut to the Quick” play festival, and the sketch
revue Youthenized at Donny’s Skybox. He is extremely excited to be working with Collaboraction for
the first time, having been a Sketchbook fan for many years. Thanks to Anthony, Sarah, Michael, Kyra
and Chelsea. Love to his beautiful fiancee Amy.

Emily Schwartz (playwright, The Dreaded Zepplin) is the Artistic Director of and Resident
Playwright for The Strange Tree Group. For them she has penned such critically acclaimed shows as
The Dastardly Ficus and Other Comedic Tales of Woe and Misery, Mr. Spacky...The Man Who Was
Continuously Followed by Wolves, and The Mysterious Elephant and the Terrible Tragedy of the
Unlikely Addington Twins*(*Who Kill Him). Ms. Schwartz is an Artistic Associate of Collaboraction and
has had her work featured in Sketchbooks 5,6,7,8 and now 9. She was the Critic’s Pick for Best
Chicago Playwright of 2008 in the Chicago Reader, is collector of antique chairs, a lover of lantern light
and graduate of Indiana University.

Jack Tamburri (director, What I Am Supposed to Be) has directed plays for Chicago Fusion
Theater (bobrauschenbergamerica) and Mary Arrchie (7 Blowjobs). He has performed with National
Headquarters, The Hypocrites, The Building Stage, The House Theatre of Chicago, and The Plagiarists,
with whom he is a company member, and his writing has been performed at the Abbie Hoffman Died
For Our Sins Festival and The University of Chicago. During the day he is the Artistic Administrator of
Court Theatre.

Ken Urban’s (playwright, Psuedoephedrine) plays have been produced at The Flea, Moving
Arts, Target Margin, Theatre of NOTE, Rude Guerrilla, The Mill @ Stage Left, and The Chocolate
Factory. His work has been developed at Playwrights Horizons, The Huntington, Son of Semele
Ensemble, Urban Stages, Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, Soho Rep and Annex Theatre. Ken
received the L. Arnold Weissberger Prize from Williamstown Theatre Festival, a Jerome Fellowship from
the Playwrights’ Center, a Playwriting Fellowship from the Huntington Theatre, a MacDowell Residency,
and a Tennessee Williams Fellowship from the Sewanee Writers Conference. Other plays include I
(HEART) KANT, Nibbler, Halo, The Absence of Weather, The Private Lives of Eskimos, The Female
Terrorist Project, and The Happy Sad. Ken is the Founding Artistic Director of The Committee, a New
York-based theatre company that produces “catastrophic theatre.” He teaches theatre and playwriting

The Devised Pieces


Mark Comiskey (The Gist) has been producing, creating and performing original theater, music
and media on Chicago stages for nearly 20 years. His work has premiered locally at the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Dance Chicago, PAC/Edge, Links Hall, throughout New York City and in festivals
across Germany. He has created over 70 original productions and has also been seen performing with
PLaSTiCeNe, The Curious Theater Branch, Theatre Oobleck, Red Moon, the Neo-Futurists, Bread &
Puppet, Prop Theater and Jellyeye. Mark has scored and performed original music for dancer Asimina
Chermos, Curious Theater Branch, Local Infinities, Maestro-matic, Plasticene, Prop Theatre and Red
Moon. He has worked as a foley artist for Big Idea’s animated series VegiTales; and released a CD, A
Wide Arc, as a member of the performance poetry ensemble, Ten Tongues. Mark earns a living as the
Video Director of Blue Man Group, Chicago.

Sandra Delgado (para carmen) is a founding member of Collaboraction and co-produced the
Sketchbook festival from 2005-2008. Acting credits with the company include Guinea Pig Solo,
Refuge and the upcoming summer 2009 world premiere of El Grito del Bronx, a co-production with
Teatro Vista in association with the Goodman Theatre. She has been an ensemble of Teatro Vista,
the Midwest’s only Equity Latino theatre company, since 2004 and served as the company’s associate
artistic director from 2006-2008. Acting credits with the company include the Midwest premiere of
Massacre (co-production with the Goodman); Dreamlandia; Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and Two
Sisters and a Piano (co-production with Apple Tree). In Chicago, she has also appeared on the stages
of Steppenwolf, the Goodman, Victory Gardens, Lookingglass, and About Face. Outside of Chicago,
Ms. Delgado has been seen Off-Broadway at INTAR; at Actors Theatre of Louisville and at Missouri
Repertory.

Dean Evans (SpaceLab.2030) is a professional Actor, Mime Artist, and Clown. He has studied Mime
and Physical Theater at The School for Mime Theater, The Ohio State University, and with masters
Marcel Marceau, Stephen Niedzialkowsky, and Avner Eisenberg. He is an ensemble member of the
Neo-Futurists and has performed with Kapoot Clown Theater, Redmoon, Chicago Children’s Theater,
Second City, The Goodman and as a solo artist. He performs a one man Clown and Mime show called
The Magical Exploding Boy. He is the director of Chicago Physical Theater, an organization that teaches
Clown, Mime and Physical Theatre.
Paula Gilovich (Big Tent) is the director of About Face Youth Theatre. She most recently wrote
and directed Fast Forward, which premiered last summer. As a playwright and director, her work has
been performed at Center on Halsted, SAIC, PAC/Edge, Curious Theatre Branch and The Vic Theatre.
As a reporter and essayist, Gilovich has contributed to the New York Times, Allure, The Stranger, and
other publications nationwide. She co-founded Tenth Avenue East Publishing, where she edited and
published the titles: The World is Yours: The Geography of Hip Hop, The Rendevous Reader, and
Pacific Bell. Currently, she is trying to start a high school and finish her first novel. She is thrilled to be a
part of Sketchbook 2009.

Andrew Hobgood (Domestic Disturbance at Little Fat Charlie’s Seventh Birthday


Party) is a founder and Artistic Director of The New Colony. He co-created the 2006 FringeNYC
Best Musical, 58!, and co-wrote and directed Love is Dead which won the 2008 FringeNYC award for
Outstanding Music and Lyrics and three After Dark awards. Recent directing projects include the Jeff
Recommended production of Torch Song Trilogy and The New Colony’s productions of Amelia Earhart
Jungle Princess and FRAT. He and The New Colony are working in collaboraction with Victory Gardens
Theater on Literally Sexy and are excited to be part of Sketchbook. Many thanks to Anthony, Seth,

Carolyn Hoerdemann (Fix your teeth b*tch) is pleased to be back at Sketchbook


and Collaboraction where she is an Artistic Associate, and grateful to be collaborating with the
incomparable Atalee Judy again, as she collaborated and performed in The De Evolution of
Mudwoman with Breakbone Dance Co. this past summer at the Viaduct Theatre. Carolyn is also
inspired by her other collaborator, film-maker Carl Wiedeman. As a member of the European Repertory
Company for twelve years, she performed as Clytemnestra, Glactia in Scenes from An Execution,
Madame de St Fond in Madame DeSade, and many Russians; in Zoyka’s Apt, Uncle Vanya, Ivanov,
The Duel, Black Milk, and Maria’s Field at TUTA Theatre where she was also the Nurse in Romeo and
Juliet. Carolyn has a BFA from DePaul and an MAAE from The School of the Art Institute, she teaches
Performance at DePaul University. This is for Dr. R.

Greta Honold (Big Tent) is super psyched to be a deviser for this year’s Sketchbook. Greta is
most often an actor and was seen in Collaboraction’s Heros and Villains as well as in Sketchbook 6
and 7. She has also worked with Steppenwolf, Court, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Redmoon and Piven
among others. Greta has been heard on the radio, reading for WBEZ’s Stories On Stage, and seen
on TV, in the sitcom What About Joan? as well as in a few silly commercials. In June, she graduated
from University of Chicago with a BA in Anthropology and now is a proud staff member at About Face
Theatre.

Atalee Judy (Fix Your Teeth, B*tch) does it all for her Chicago based dance company Breakbone
DanceCo. A genuine DIY gal, Atalee has racked up an impressive list of credits; Choreographer, Dancer,
Marathon Runner, Actor, Director, Composer, Singer, Costumer, Filmmaker, Producer, and Punk Rocker.

Joseph Ravens (Kattywampus) creates performances that challenge expectations and champion
a dialogue between artistic mediums. Recipient of numerous awards for interdisciplinary art and new
performance forms, Ravens has shown throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. He studied at
the Gerrit Reitveldt Acadamie in Amsterdam and received his Master of Fine Arts in Performance from

THE PRODUCTION STAFF


Seth Bockley (Producing Director of Devised Work) is a director, writer and performer in
Chicago, and is currently serving as Collaboraction’s Associate Artistic Director. He was a recipient
of the 2005-2007 Theater Communications Group New Generations Grant, which supported an
intensive apprenticeship to Redmoon’s artistic directors Jim Lasko and Frank Maugeri in the fields of
site-specific theater and art direction. Recent projects include Collaboraction’s critically acclaimed
world-premiere adaptation of George Saunders’ short story Jon, for which he served as director and
adaptor. Other recent writing credits include the puppet opera Laika’s Coffin, Redmoon’s Boneyard
Prayer, and Hansel and Gretel at Links Hall’s “Method to Madness”. Directing credits include Jon,
Hansel and Gretel, Impossible Cities: A Utopian Experiment, and event work and site specific theater
with Redmoon, Collaboraction, and Walkabout Theater.

Dexter Bullard (Guest Curator of Devised Work) is honored to curate the devised
portion of this year’s Sketchbook. Dexter is theater artist dedicated to creating and directing
original theater for Chicago and beyond. He co–founded Plasticene – a physical theater company
whose critically–acclaimed experimental works have been featured at The Steppenwolf Studio, The
Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Storefront Theatre, MCA, The Cultural Center, The Museum of Science
and Industry, Performing Arts Chicago, and in New York City. In 2004, Dexter was awarded the Lucille
Lortel Award for Outstanding Direction Off-Broadway for Tracy Letts’ Bug at The Barrow Street
Theater, as well as a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Director. He founded The Next Lab
at The Next Theatre where he directed Bouncers, for which he received a Jefferson Citation and an
After Dark award for his direction. As Associate Artistic Director at Next Theatre, he directed and/or
created eight shows for mainstage and Lab. He has also directed projects for Famous Door, American
Theatre Company, Hartford Stage Company, and many times for A Red Orchid Theatre. Dexter is
Head of Graduate Acting at The Theatre School at DePaul University and teaches acting, physical
theater, and improvisation nationally.

Jeremy Getz (Lighting Designer) is a well-known, diverse and accomplished lighting designer
working in Chicago for the past 10 years. After receiving a BFA in lighting design from DePaul
University Theater School, he helped establish and maintain Collaboraction. He also designed
lighting for the Albany Park Theater Project, Circle Theater, Ensemble Espanola, and Steppenwolf
Garage. He designed the lighting for several area nightclubs and restaurants including Avec,
RedNofive, Hydrate and OHM. Mr. Getz has served as the technical director and lighting designer
of Northside College Prep. He also works as a freelance lighting technician and programmer for
Intelligent Lighting Creations and Upstaging where projects include River of Life in Seattle, Spring
Branch in Virginia Beach, and St. Francis and St. Charles High Schools, both in Chicago.
Sarah Gitenstein (Casting Director) is a company member and the resident Casting Director
at Collaboraction. For Collaboraction, Sarah has cast, assistant directed and produced numerous
productions including the World Premiere of Heroes and Villains, SKETCHBOOKs 6, 7 and 8, and The
Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow. For other Chicago theaters, Sarah cast Teatro Vista’s Dreamlandia
directed by Cecilie Keenan and has performed with Curious Theater, Pavement Group, Teatro Vista,
and Timeline.

Elsa Hiltner (Costume Designer) is thrilled to be designing with Collaboraction on


SKETCHBOOK 2009! Earlier this season she designed costumes for JON and has costumed many
events with Collaboraction in the past year. Other Chicago credits include DRIVING MISS DAISY
(Nominated for a Jeff Award for Best Costume Design), JEEVES INTERVENES, MUCH ADO ABOUT
NOTHING, DESIGN FOR LIVING, A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN and THE MADNESS OF EDGAR

Kristin Idaszak (Assistant Festival Director) is delighted to return to Collaboraction after


assistant directing JON this fall. She recently assistant directed Thomas Middleton’s The Changeling for
Caffeine Theatre, where she also co-curated the Antigone Coffeehouse and dramaturged Ion. She has
interned in the literary departments at The Goodman and La Jolla Playhouse. This spring her plays will
receive readings and Chicago Dramatists and the Theatre School at DePaul University, where she will
also be directing Late: A Cowboy Song. She will receive her BFA in Theatre Arts and a double major in
Philosophy this June. Thanks to her family, and to Anthony, Seth and Sam.

Martin Kamenski (Managing Director) is thrilled to help produce his first SKETCHBOOK.
A long-time fan and recently appointed Managing Director, he still can’t get over how many truly
talented individuals come together to create this festival. Martin has produced Collaboraction’s first
three productions this season, and is currently also President and Founder of Rockstar CPA, Chicago’s
premier creative and entertainment industry accounting firm. He also sits on the boards of Matter
Dance Company and the Global Alliance of Artists.

Sarah Moeller (Production Manager) is a Collaboraction company member, resident


production manager and director. Her past credits with Collaboraction include Production Manager
for Heroes and Villains, JON, Gold Brick and The Siddhartha Project, Stage Manager for The Pull Toy
and his Paisan, Sketchbooks 6, 7 & 8, director for SLP’s 365 Project and the premiere studio series
project, Tone Clusters. She is also a company member at Eclipse Theatre Company where she works
as a dramaturg, director and stage manager. When she isn’t working in the theater she can be found
teaching elementary music around Chicago.
Anthony Moseley (Festival Director) has been the Executive Artistic Director of
COLLABORACTION since 1999, where he has led the company through a period of remarkable growth
from $19,000 annually to over $600,000. During this period he has developed a Board of Directors,
strategic planning process, operations staff, a for-hire division called Experience Design that offer
Collaboraction’s creative and production services to private clients and produced over 100 productions
and events including Collaboraction’s critically acclaimed productions of JON, The Life and Times of
Tulsa Lovechild; a road trip, Guinea Pig Solo, and The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow. Collaboraction
recently received a “Hopie” award from the Lester and Hope Abelson Foundation for recognition
in creativity and innovation. Mr. Moseley is the co-creator and Festival Director of the annual
SKETCHBOOK Festival, an electrifying blend of theatre, music and art makes up “premiere short play
festival in the Midwest.” His past Collaboraction directing credits include Mud by Maria Irene Fornes,
the Chicago premiere of Refuge by Jessica Goldberg (2000 Jeff Citation nomination for Best Direction),
To Kill a Mockingbird by Christopher Sergel based on the novel by Harper Lee, the Chicago premiere
of The Cosmonaut’s Last Message to the Woman He Once Loved in the Former Soviet Union by David
Greig, the Chicago premiere of Guinea Pig Solo by Brett C. Leonard, the world premiere of The Pull
Toy (and His Pasian) by Robert McEwen, the world premiere of Heroes and Villains by Dan Janoff and
numerous world premiere short plays at Sketchbook. Mr. Moseley produced, directed and wrote
Nightlight (Independent Film Channel) and The Bee (winner of Audience Choice Award – Short Film,
2002 N.Y. Int’l Independent Film Festival). As an actor, Mr. Moseley was in the world premiere of Jose
Rivera’s Massacre, produced by the Teatro Vista in Association with the Goodman Theatre in the
Owen Theatre. He as has also performed in Collaboraction’s When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder (1999
Jeff Citation nomination for Best Actor), Beyond Therapy, Three Sisters, Spandex and Sympathy and
Pong. Mr. Moseley has also been performed in numerous commercials, televisions shows and movies
including Prison Break and The Beast. Anthony was the 2007 Michael Maggio Fellow for early-career
directors at Goodman Theatre. He graduated in ’95 from the University of Notre Dame with a BA in
Finance before having his quarter-life crisis and pursuing a career in theater and arts.

Becky Perlman (Literary Manager) is Collaboraction’s literary manager. She’s worked with
companies including Apple Tree Theatre, Around the Coyote, Child’s Play, Collaboraction, Collision
Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, Northlight Theatre, Pavement Theatre
Group, Six Flags Great America Theme Park, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Timeline Theatre
Company, Uma Productions, Williamstown Theatre Festival. This winter, she dramaturged J.T. Roger’s
The Overwhelming at Next Theatre.

Miles Polaski (Sound Design) Miles Polaski is a sound designer, composer and musician in
Chicago, IL. He is the resident sound designer with Collaboraction and a music director/curator with
Serendipity Theatre’s 2nd Story. In 2008, Miles worked on music for Lie of the Mind at Strawdog Theatre
which won a non-equity Jeff Award and his sound design for White People at The Gift Theatre was
nominated for an equity Jeff Award. In 2007, he was nominated for two non-equity Jeff Awards for his
sound design and original compositions for Equus at Actor’s Workshop. Miles has had the pleasure
of working with many Chicago theatre companies, since moving to Chicago in 2004, including TUTA,
Chicago Dramatists, Noble Fool Theatricals, The House Theatre of Chicago, Chicago Shakespeare,
Light Opera Works, Redmoon, The Hypocrites, Theatre Seven, Infamous Commonwealth, Backstage
Theatre, among others. Before moving to Chicago, Miles worked as an actor and sound designer at
The Barter Theatre, state theater of Virginia.

Sam Porretta (Production Design) is Chicago based designer, director & performer. A company
member since 2004, he currently serves as Collaboraction’s Creative Director, and has designed
productions for Jon, Sketchbook ’04 -‘08, Guinea Pig Solo, Beggar’s Banquet ’04-’06, along with
also co-directing Carnaval, Prom, Suffering City, and Krisis. He has also designed sets for Serendipity
Theatre Collective (Girl 20), Theater Wit (Men of Steel), and Field House Lab (Orpheus Now). As
a performer, he has worked with notable Chicago companies such as Redmoon, The Hypocrites,
Strawdog, and Trap Door. He devoted last year to studying design methodologies at the alternative
design school Archeworks. There he worked in a multidisciplinary design team along with members
of Chicago 2016 (Olympic Bid Committee) creating strategies to engage Chicago’s ethnic and cultural
communities in the Olympics.

Jessie Wayburn (Props Designer) is thrilled to be working with Collaboraction for the first time.
She is the Production Manager for The New Colony, typically, but she also works as a Stage Manager
all around town. She most recently stage managed The Shape of a Girl with Pegasus Players, a Jeff-
recommended production. She was stage manager for The New Colony’s inaugural production, Amelia
Earhart: Jungle Princess, winner of Chicago Free Press’s Pressie for Best Local Theater Production. Her
previous Chicago stage management credits include The Grounded Theatre, The Comedy Shrine,
the Awesome 80’s Prom, Open Door Productions with Northlight Theatre, A Red Orchid Theatre,
the Theatre Arts Project with Thresholds, Trap Door Theatre, Open Eye Productions, Black Sheep
Productions, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, Seanachai Theatre, and the Game Show Show... & Stuff!
with Strawdog Theater members at the Lakeshore Theatre. Her other credits include Spoleto Festival
USA and PURE Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, as well as One Little Goat Theatre of Toronto,
when they toured to Trap Door Theatre.

Sheena L. Young (Stage Manager) is completely thrilled to be working with Collaboraction on


Sketchbook 2009. Some of her previous experiences have included working as the ASM for Winter
Pageant Redux 2009 and SM for Boneyard Prayer at Redmoon Theater. She has also enjoyed working
on Noir at the Building Stage Theater, Odin’s Horse at Infamous Commonwealth Theater, and Bare, A
Pop Opera at the Bailiwick Repertory Theater. She is also currently the Dramaturg for The Grapes of
Wrath at Infamous Commonwealth Theater as well. Sheena thanks her family, De and Michael Stauffer
for inspiring her.
What is Collaboraction?
Collaboraction’s is a company of creative people organized as a non-profit corporation
which acts as the hub of a large and fluid Chicago-based artistic community to create unique
artistic experiences through theatre and multidisciplinary collaboration in order to celebrate
the human spirit.

The company is an award-winning theater dedicated to melding artistries and providing


them in a variety of forms. Founded in 1997, Collaboraction has created over 35 productions
representing a wide variety of genres that have garnered 14 Joseph Jefferson nominations

the Chicago area. In the ten years since its inception, Collaboraction has established itself
as a reputable non-profit arts organization that has performed for over 60,000 audience
participants, and as an artistic force with a unique voice in Chicago.

Collaboraction cultivates the influence of new ideas and creativity from several disciplines,
taking inspiration from theater, music, film, visual art and dance and combining them in
unexpected and original ways. Collaboraction’s examining nature is rooted in the blending of
these mediums as a means to enhance the audiences’ experience and to cultivate the artistic
growth of collaborative artists. The company seeks to offer cultural experiences that truly
reflect and contribute to the total range of human experience. In addition, Collaboraction
strives to give young, emerging and mid-career Illinois artists opportunities to present
their work in showcases like SKETCHBOOK and our Total Environment fund raisers, such as
Beggars’ Banquet and Carnaval.

ARE YOU IN? Over the past 9 years, SKETCHBOOK has played a
critical role in developing the future of Chicago theatre's artists and audiences. While
introducing young, diverse, audiences to the power and beauty of theatre, we have
been able to play a small part in developing the careers of some theatre artists who
will lead the industry for the next 30 years, including Sean Graney, Brett Neveu, Laura
Jacqmin, Emily Schwartz, Ann Filmer, Jimmy McDermott, Amanda Delhiemer, Sandra

the festival and we must rely upon donations from individuals, funders and business

At the Goodman’s Owen Theatre: 170 N. Dearborn St.

El Grito del Bronx follows the story of Lulu on the eve of her wedding as she confronts
her past, including her connection to her brother Papo, who is on death row awaiting
the death penalty for murder. Collaboraction’s world premiere production will
merge the lyrical nature of Migdalia Cruz’s work, Teatro Vista’s stellar ensemble and
Collaboraction’s penchant for cinematic staging and powerful acting.
