Sowing seed
Tomatoes are very easy to grow from seed. Alternatively you can buy tomato 40 from 0 garden plants from 30 late 0 spring CMYK centres and are a good option where you 182 the 220 right 174 conditions for cant maintain RGB germination and growing on. Web Colour: #B6DCAE
PANTONE 345
Sow seed in early spring for outdoor crops, and late winter 60 for 75 growing 55 45 in an unheated CMYK glasshouse. Seed can be expensive, but usually only79 a few plants are needed, and 53 64 RGB germination is usually good.
PANTONE 518
Fill 9cm (3in) pot with seed or multipurpose compost Level and firm the compost, then water Sow seeds on the compost surface, spacing them evenly, about a fingerwidth apart, to prevent damping off disease Cover the seed with a layer of vermiculite Keep at approximately 21C (70F), ideally in a heated propagator, until seedlings emerge Transfer seedlings to a heated greenhouse or, although less good, a sunny windowsill Seedlings emerge after about five days. Place them in the best possible light (such as a greenhouse) and at a temperature of around 18C (65F) to prevent seedlings becoming long, thin and leggy. Leggy plants produce their first flowers high up on the plant leading to a bare, unproductive lower stem.
Growing on
Ideally, grow on in a glasshouse (or failing this, a well-lit windowsill), spacing plants so that their leaves never touch to avoid legginess. About a month after pricking out, the plants will be ready for planting into their final positions this is indicated by the first flowers showing their yellow colour. The stress of being grown in the confines of a pot promotes flowers earlier than in less stressful positions, such as growing in the ground.
Cultivation notes
Whether you raise plants from seed or buy your plants, they can all be grown in the same way. Planting Plant outside in early summer. In unheated greenhouses, planting can take place in mid-spring. Set plants 40cm (16in) apart and water in well. Watering and feeding Roots should be kept moist but never waterlogged. Pots and grow-bags require frequent watering. Feeding isnt essential for soil-grown plants, but those in bags or pots benefit from regular feeding, using tomato feed and following manufacturers instructions. Fruit set Tomato flowers self-pollinate readily. However, indoor plants benefit from being gently shaken to dislodge the pollen. Misting flowers with water can help fruit set. Harvesting Pick fruits as required, with the calyx (stalk) still attached. When cropping slows in early autumn, green fruits can be gathered and kept in a warm, dark place to ripen. Problems In a warm summer, tomatoes are easy to grow if they are well watered. However, problems can occur, with fruit ripening, fruit splitting and cracking, leaf problems, stem problems, blossom end rot, tomato blight, tomato leaf mould and tomato viruses.

Beef & lentil burgers with sweet potato wedges and salad
Serves 4 1 carrot 1 shallot 250g cooked lentils 500g lean beef mince 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 egg salt and pepper
Preheat the oven to 220C (200 fan). Grate the carrot and leave to drain for five minutes before putting into a large bowl. Finely slice the shallot and add to the bowl. Add the drained lentils, mince, tomato puree, egg, salt and pepper and combine. Divide the mixture into four and squeeze together, making into balls, then flattening to make the burgers. Put onto a baking tray (they may be too fragile under the grill)
and bake on the middle shelf for 20mins, turning halfway through. Cut the washed sweet potatoes into wedge shapes and put onto a baking tray. Toss with a tablespoon or two of oil then season with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast on the top shelf of the oven for 20-30 mins, shaking the pan halfway through to re-coat the potatoes. Serve the burger in a bun, with the wedges on the side and a big helping of freshly-dressed salad. Perfect!

IN FINE FORM: Lead by BAFTA-winning Clare Balding, Channel 4s excellent racing commentary team get set for Ascot later this month
oyal Ascot returns on 18th - 22th of this month and, for the first time, will be shown exclusively on Channel 4 as part of their extensive racing coverage. With 30 high-class races held over the course of five days, including five at the very top (Group 1) level, Royal Ascot is an unrivalled spectacle of exceptional racing, with an increasingly international profile of runners and riders. The week is also, of course, a key date in the social calendar as ladies dig out their wildest hats and fascinators for Ladies Day, and the majority of race-goers prepare for their wallets and purses to take a battering. Clare Balding is one of the UKs leading broadcasters and leads Channel 4s racing coverage. Since becoming a sports presenter in 1998, Clare has since been voted RTS Sports Presenter of the Year, Racing Journalist of the Year and worked on four Olympic Games, three Paralympics, three Winter Olympics and recently won a BAFTA for her personal contribution to factual television. Balding was previously a leading amateur flat jockey and Champion Lady
Rider. Her warmth and expertise have made her one of the most popular faces on television. Clare says she is absolutely thrilled at being part of the Channel 4 racing team. Racing is my home sport and I am delighted that I will still be part of its coverage on TV. I am excited by Channel 4s plans for their coverage and the way in which they have committed to expanding the profile of jockeys, trainers and horses. Channel 4 secured a new deal for the entire UK horse racing terrestrial rights for 2013-2016 with the Racecourse Media Group (RMG), in association with Jockey Club Racecourses, Ascot Racecourse and other independent racecourses. Royal Ascot, Grand National, Epsom Downs and QIPCO British Champions Day will sit alongside long-established coverage of Cheltenham Festival, Newbury, York, Chester, Glorious Goodwood racecourses and the Flat Season QIPCO British Champions Series. The four-year partnership will deliver around 90 days a year of terrestrial coverage of horse racing on Channel 4. Clare is flanked by an impressive commentary team, including legend Jim McGrath, Gina Bryce - who joins the team after a scholarship at the prestigious Darley
Flying Start, Graham Cunningham and Simon Holt. Channel 4s racing coverage across the five-day Royal meeting will incorporate over 31 hours of live action with six daily races plus a feast of programming to support the occasion. More information can also be found at www.channel4.com.
