BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) Starts Operation on March, 2012
BIFT has a second Campus located at Azampur, Rabindra Sharani, Uttara where regular classes are conducted which occupies about 8000 sft of floor space. Construction work of the permanent campus of the university on 2 Acre of land at Dhaur, Uttara is going to start very soon and the expected time of shifting to the permanent campus is April 2014. Total floor area of the 10 storied university complex will be about 3,78,560 sft. BUFT is also going to purchase 22 kathas of land adjacent to the southern side to expand its permanent campus. In addition, BUFT has received an allotment of one bigha of land at Uttara from RAJUK Mission and Objectives
In keeping with its name, BGMEA launched BUFT with an expectation to create the university as a center of excellence for development of technically competent human resources for the apparel sector of Bangladesh. The primary mission of BUFT is to provide, at a reasonable cost, technical education characterized by academic excellence in a range of subjects that are particularly relevant to current and anticipated societal needs. Central to the BUFTs mission is its intention to produce versatile and resourceful practitioners with scientific, technological and social knowledge and equip them to overcome the challenges of the 21 st Century. Specific objectives behind establishing BUFT are as follows: To develop BIFT as an international standard institute of fashion and technology in the apparel sector. To deliver international standard education in fashion and technology. To strengthen the Bangladesh export oriented RMG industries through providing technically skilled human resources. To increase the overall efficiency and productivity of the RMG sector through development of human resources. To develop technical competency and consultancy skill relating to local, national and international issues. To provide technical assistance in all aspects of garments manufacturing to the local apparel industries. To keep close contact with the students and employers to fulfill their intellectual and creative potential. To create opportunities for development and training of the employees and staffs of the RMG sector. To establish and maintain close links with the similar local and foreign institutions to encourage exchange of staff and students. To facilitate exchange of views, sharing experience and best practices within the industry for overall development of Bangladesh RMG sector. To provide useful information and data about the industry and update the students as well as entrepreneurs with latest technology in the apparel sector. To extend support to the stakeholders of the industry on policy advocacy and reforms through organizing and conducting seminars, workshops, conference, study tours etc. Apart from the above objectives, BUFT Management and Faculties are also keen to undertake any kind of academic and research activities within their capacity for the overall benefit of the country as a whole and particularly for growth of the RMG sector of Bangladesh in view of the prevailing competitive business environment in the global market.

Proposed BUFT main campus

BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) which was earlier known as BGMEA Institute of Fashion & Technology (BIFT) has been dedicated to train and develop skilled manpower for the readymade garment, textile and allied sectors of Bangladesh. The aim is to develop this university as a centre of excellence for producing technically competent human resources through higher education, research and development to serve the nation. Sponsored by BGMEA, this university started functioning as BGMEA Institute of Fashion & Technology (BIFT) from 1999, a pioneer and leading training institute specialized in the apparel sector of Bangladesh. It started functioning from 2000 and was affiliated with the National University until it was declared as a full-fledged private university i.e. BUFT in March 2012. With the advent of the readymade garment industry in Bangladesh, the apex body of RMG industries, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) visualized the need for a world class education institution that will deliver quality training and educational services to produce graduates and qualified practitioner and skilled personnel who after completing their education from BUFT will join the export oriented garment industry in Bangladesh and thereby, help filling up the vacuum of skilled manpower for the growing RMG industry earning the major portion of foreign currency from the countrys export basket. Another feature of Bangladesh garment and textile sector is the constraints of properly educated and qualified mid level managers. As a result, this sector has to recruit and hire thousands of expatriates with very high salary which drains out a substantial amount of our hard-earned foreign currency. This is mainly due to lack of proper educational facilities and non availability of training courses in the existing educational system of Bangladesh. To overcome this problem, BGMEA took a visionary step by establishing BGMEA Institute of Fashion & Technology in 1999 and subsequently the initiative to upgrade this institute to a private university is another historical landmark, which will enable the garment and apparel sector to compete with the global competitors and increase its market share. Essentially, skill development and enhancement of quality of manpower working in the RMG sector through appropriate training and research & development has become a crucial factor at this point of time. Skilled manpower increases productivity, reduces cost of operation and enables the local industries produce goods at a lower cost and thus the industry becomes competitive in the global market. At present, the export oriented readymade garments industry sector needs a large number of skilled manpower for its 5,000 factories in order to enable them to produce quality products at a very competitive price. In this regard, BUFT as the Center of Excellence in the Apparel Sector can play a very effective role. Since inception, this institute has been offering courses of high standard, which are comparable to courses offered in the developing world. BUFT maintains an excellent academic atmosphere to achieve high academic standard for its reputation. As a result, most of the BUFT graduates normally enter job market before publication of their final results.
