Evaluation of Student Progress

Evaluation tools are selected based on the appropriateness for the concept being taught. Teacher observation, oral assessments, projects or reports, journals, student portfolios, rubrics, anecdotal records, conferences with students, open-ended question responses, class participation, written tests and quizzes, and performance are examples of evaluation tools that may be used. Assessed work will be sent home every Wednesday in each students red Graded Papers folder. Parents will view the work, sign the signature log, and return the folder the following day.

Student progress on the report card is based on what is being taught within the nine weeks. If units of study occurred during the first nine weeks in a content area, the remainder of the spaces after the first nine weeks should be left blank. Symbols will not be carried forward to consecutive nine weeks if they have not been instructed again during the nine weeks.

year, mid-year, and end of the year Portfolio: Student work samples that reflect curriculum integration and can be used when evaluating several content areas.

I will assess Math through observations, tests, daily work, and participation. Math tests are given at the end of each unit. There may be other assessments given during a unit of study as well. Science and Social Studies are assessed by unit tests, observations, projects, and participation.

Communication with Parents Modeling

It is very important that you and I model daily reading and use of math. I read to your child every day in class. It is very important that you model reading and read to them at home. If your child is struggling with the assigned reading task, you need to read a page and let your child read the same page back to you. We ALL need practice to accomplish new things. Remember reading is new to your child. Please be patient with them and give them lots of practice at home. Review basic math skills with your child so they may build fluency for new skills that will be introduced. Parents, teachers, and students must work together to ensure that each student reaches his or her fullest potential. Communication between home and school is the key to success for every child. Each family will receive: *A copy of the classroom syllabus *A weekly Monday Memo that includes skills being taught and school-wide announcements *Telephone calls, emails, or notes concerning a childs progress or behavior *Invitations to special class and school events *Bi-weekly progress reports *Report cards *Parent conferences *STAR Binders **All communication will be documented.

Please refer to the ABCs of First Grade for all school & classroom policies. You may find the ABCs in your childs STAR binder. Long-range teaching plans may be found on my teacher website. If you would like a copy of the long-range teaching plans, please let me know.
