For 15 years, we have been producing timeless furniture from solid teak and oak. In our designs, we go back to what is the essence of good furniture: we aim for impeccable craftsmanship to create sustainable pieces full of character, made of solid wood that ages beautifully. Ethnicraft furniture is authentic, warm and natural. It is strong, functional and sturdy, made with a passion for pure lines and respect for the wood itself. Every product is finished carefully in our own workshops in Indonesia, Vietnam and Serbia. Our timeless, stunningly simple collections can be found in the most diverse interiors all over the world, where they only become more beautiful as years go by.
One single container full of decorative items from Indonesia. That is how the story of Ethnicraft began. In 1995, Antwerp entrepreneur Philippe Delaisse decided to bring back a container of furniture and interior accessories from his holiday in Indonesia, in order to sell them at home. His friend Benoit Loos heard about it and joined forces with Philippe. Together, they started to import one container every few months. After just one year, they had clients waiting at the Antwerp docks, numbered ticket in hand, to buy that one special item they desired. The partners very quickly decided that they wanted to design and manufacture their own furniture, and set up their first production site in Indonesia. Today, Ethnicraft has production facilities in Indonesia, Vietnam and Serbia, with offices near Marseille, in Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong, and, of course, a head office in Belgium. Ethnicraft is an international trendsetter with an extensive network of retailers all over the world. And it is still growing, with more and more customers in Asia, America and Europe specifically asking for the brand. A new chapter has begun.

An interior with personality is all about creativity and inventiveness. Wed like to help you with that. Our benches, for instance, are clever space savers: they create extra seating around the table, but can also be used to display your favourite books and magazines or to make a decorative corner.

Alain van Havre designed the circle table
Classic Japanese puzzles served as inspiration for the design of the circle table.
Alain van Havre works fulltime for Ethnicraft as in-house designer. The complexity of things has always intrigued him, which led him to study product development at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. To him, all design embodies the same duality: the aim is to create a timeless product, yet with a hint to the specific moment in which it is made. We are always influenced by the past; however, it is up to us to find the right balance between past and present. Alain, who is a friend of Philippe Delaisse and
Benoit Loos, started working at Ethnicraft in 1999 - first in Operations in Ethnicraft Azur in Aixen-Provence and since 6 years in product development. It was a perfect match, especially since he considers wood as a continuously evolving material, where boundaries are pushed further every day, creating endlessly new challenges. He found his inspiration for the design of the circle table in classic Japanese puzzles. The wooden legs slot together to create a solid base and a unique table. Its round shape adds to creating a convivial atmosphere.

Patrik Pettersson designed the pettersson dining table

Pettersson, the dining table with a twist.

The Oak and Teak Pettersson table is characterised by the way the table legs are crossed. The table looks Swedish, and so it should: it was designed by Swede Patrik Pettersson. Patrik studied to be a lawyer, then decided to attend the Stockholm Beckhams School of Design, and graduated as a product designer. On page 140 Patrik tells us about his inspiration for his first Ethnicraft design.
This table is all about dining at home.

This striking table with its slender oval top and tapered legs was inspired by Scandinavian design. Everything about the Ellipse breathes dining at home. The Ellipse table represents everything Alain stands for. It is a solid yet stylishly refined wooden table, a combination of the past and the present, and its black colour only enhances the beauty of the wood. This design is intended to make everybody feel at home; everyone is welcome at the Ellipse table, a table that gives a naturally elegant and easy chic look to every home.

Heidi Earnshaw designed the Tripod side table
Heidi creates contemporary furniture that fits seamlessly into our everyday life.
Toronto-based Heidi Earnshaw designs and makes furniture. Her background in fine art and a deep understanding of the nature of wood make her designs real works of beauty, with clean lines, carefully thought-out proportions and clever details. Heidis inspiration comes from Japanese and Scandinavian architecture, Shaker furniture, mid-century modernism and traditional craftsmanship. She re-interprets historic
pieces and creates contemporary, beautiful furniture that fits seamlessly into our everyday life. She says: When I designed the Tripod table, I wanted to create a light, versatile piece that could be used on its own, or in a group of several tables. It can easily be moved from room to room, and its simple and versatile enough to be used next to a chair or a settee, or as a bedside table.

Nathan Yong designed the N-chair collection
Nathan Yong describes his work as silent engineering: I like my design to evoke a sense of wonder.
Yong is often described as one of the most successful and influential designers of his generation. Currently based in Singapore, he runs a multidisciplinary design consultancy practice. His work spans across industrial design, graphics, interior design, architectural design, strategic planning in product development and manufacturing processes as well as branding. Nathan Yong graduated from Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore, with a diploma in Industrial Design. He began his career not as a designer, but as a buyer as well
as engaging in product development for various companies. For these jobs, he travelled to various countries including India, Vietnam, and Indonesia to source for craftsmen and quality manufacturers to develop and manufacture furniture and home accessories. He started designing the successful N chairs for Ethnicraft a few years ago. This year we are proud to launch a new version: the N4 chair, a very elegant and light chair thanks to the use of thin profiles. This N4 chair is a veritable eye catcher.

Teak is the extremely strong, durable wood from the Tectona grandis, which grows in the East Indies. The wood has a warm, intense glow that makes teak furniture attractive. Patrik Pettersson designed the Pettersson table
The dining table with a twist!
Its typically crossed legs characterize the Pettersson table, crafted from oak and teak. This dining table looks distinctly Swedish, and no wonder: the Swede Patrik Pettersson designed it. Patrik first studied to be a lawyer, then changed his mind and decided to attend Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm, where he graduated as a product designer. He subsequently went
on to work for a list of renowned designers such as Eero Koivisto until 2005, when he established his own design studio in Stockholm. Over the years, he has built a strong international reputation, participating in many internationally celebrated fairs from Maison & Objet in Paris to the Design Weeks of London, Milan, and many more.

The totems symbolise the relationship we have with the earth

We discovered the Totems in the studio of unconventional Antwerp artist Walter Goossens. He carved these works of art from wood in 1982. I have always been fascinated by Native American Indians, says Walter. To me, the Totems symbolise the relationship we have with the earth. They rise up from the ground and tell their story to the sky and the sun. Ethnicraft has reproduced the authentic Totems in different heights. These minimalist objects can be grouped in various ways or combined with different settings, giving a dynamic touch to any interior.

Wood, like any other natural and porous material, continues to absorb and to release humidity throughout its life. Ethnicraft designs furniture that can adapt well to the hygrometric conditions of its environment. Its design structure allows the wood to expand and contract.
Wood has always been the core material in the Ethnicraft collection. Therefore we continuously think about the consequences for the environment and take environmental issues to heart: from the origin of the wood, the energy we use in the entire production and distribution process, to the treatment of the products and reduction of waste. Every day we try to be good stewards of the earth.
Variations in wood grain, texture & colour, knots and other natural occurring characteristics are inherent to solid wood. We believe that these imperfections contribute to the charm of Ethnicraft. Wood is a product of nature, we finish our products according to the rules of art and best practices. Our craftsmen apply different wood working techniques such as wood inlaying and usage of wood paste. Ethnicraft consciously selects a specific wood quality that adds more character to its designs. All our furniture is made of solid wood and has been designed for indoor usage. The ideal house humidity should be kept between 40% - 60%. The ideal constant room temperature is 21C during the day at no less than 14C at night.
THE ORIGIN OF OUR CORE MATERIAL Ethnicrafts teak wood comes from two main sources. On the one hand, it is carefully reclaimed timber extracted from neglected buildings or old warehouses, mainly from the island of Central Java in Indonesia. On the other hand, Ethnicraft works closely together with the Indonesian government body in charge of managing the teak plantations originally set up by the Dutch about 150 years ago. This government agency applies strict policies with regard to annual replanting, as well as to the size and quantity of trees felled each year. For oak our partner factories work with French and Serbian oak from well-managed forests in Europe.
FSC LABEL FOR TEAK FURNITURE Our commitment to the environment is reflected by the FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) certification of our distribution centres. FSC is a worldwide independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that promotes the responsible management of the worlds forests. In other words, this organisation certifies that products that carry the FSC label come from forests that are managed in a way to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. In the case of Ethnicraft NV and Azur, the CoC-certificate provides the guarantee that the company is perfectly structured to buy, stock & sell products with a specified FSC certificate originating from well-managed forests, controlled sources, reclaimed materials, or a mixture of those. At the moment, several of the collections Ethnicraft sells already have a FSC 100% Recycled label, meaning that the products are made of reclaimed timber. These collections are indicated in the catalogue. Moreover, all efforts are being made to increase the number of collections with an FSC label in the future.
NO ENERGY TO WASTE
Wood is a product of nature, we believe that its imperfections contribute to the charm of our creations
Production waste, such as residue of logs, wood leftovers and sawdust are being re-used for other means. The sawdust from the logs is either used as a fuel in the drying ovens or compacted as a basis for palettes. All the leftovers after cutting planks to size are recycled by using them as a base material, as finger joints for panels.

MAINTENANCE OAK*
The oak wood used in the Ethnicraft Oak collection is sourced from well managed forests in Europe. All oak furniture is first slightly tinted with a water-based colour and then oiled. This combination gives the furniture a natural colour. This finish will restore the initial coating and seal the pores of the timber, forming a natural protection against everyday wear and tear. Frequent washing with the natural soap solution will increase the surface resistance. Overtime the wood will absorb more and more soap making the piece more repellent to marks or staining. Preventive & regular treatment Ethnicrafts unfinished teak furniture allows you to choose from various preventive treatments. Due to the diversity of treatments available on the market, you will have to choose a protective treatment according to your own expectations. Ethnicraft distributes two preventive treatments for teak furniture: Ethnicraft PU-oil: Treatment with PU-oil. The coating can hardly be seen, but will slightly lighten the surface. Optimal protection will be obtained one week after applying the varnish. Daily care: use a sponge with a mild solution of water & natural soap (avoid aggressive soaps). Ethnicraft Hardwax oil natural mat (3062) Treatment with Hardwax Osmo oil. Will darken the wood. Easy maintenance of the oiled surface. Application: apply the oil once/twice a month during the first 3 months. This finish will seal the pores of the timber, forming a natural protection against everyday wear and tear. Afterwards, an application twice a year should be sufficient to maintain the soft oil finish of the wood. When taking good care of your product this protection should be sufficient. General remark Polyurethane oil (PU) vs Hardwax Osmo oil: The two treatment options are incompatible. Both protections are no guarantee against stains. alloy steel that is strong and durable. Stainless steel is easy to clean. Wash the stainless steel parts of the furniture with soap or a mild detergent and warm water. Rinse afterwards with clean water. Wipe dry if necessary. To remove fingerprints: rinse with soap or a mild detergent and warm water. To remove fingerprints, you can also use an organic solvent instead of soap (e.g. acetone, alcohol or methylated spirits). For stubborn stains and discolouration: to remove stains or discolouration, use a rag, sponge or fibre brush (in soft nylon or natural bristle; also an old toothbrush can be useful). Remove the stains with a mild cleaning solution, such as e.g. Jif or Cif, or another specialty stainless steel cleaner. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry. Scratches: for slight scratches, use multipurpose scouring pads (e.g. Scotch-Brite) to clean the surface. Follow the polish lines. Clean with soap or detergent as for routine cleaning. Do NOT use any steel wool or sandpaper, mineral acids, bleaches or chlorine cleansers on the stainless steel surface!
MAINTENANCE SALOON SOFAS

All leathers must be cleaned with a dry cloth or slightly damped in natural water if necessary. Avoid hard rubbing when cleaning. Vacuum the seat platforms to remove dust or crumbs. Our leather does not require feeding but can be enriched by using a quality leather cream. These sofas are designed for indoor use.

Ethnicraft uses reclaimed and plantation teak wood from Java, Indonesia. Teak is a dense hardwood with high natural oil content, naturally repelling moisture. No other wood shares the exceptional strength and durability of teak. Thanks to its density, stains remain on the surface and do not deeply penetrate the wood. The Ethnicraft teak collection comes unfinished; it hasnt undergone any kind of protective treatment. The wood is merely polished, causing the natural oils to rise to the surface.
