Brief History

Mobilink GSM (PMCL), a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom, started its operations in 1994,

and has become the market leader both in terms of growth as well as having the largest

customer subscriber base in Pakistan - a base of over 20 million and growing. Pride ourselves

on being the first cellular service provider to operate on a 100% digital GSM technology in

Pakistan that also provides state-of-the-art communication solutions to its customers.

Orascom Telecom

Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. ("Orascom Telecom") or ("OTH") was established in 1998

and has grown to become a major player in the telecommunication market in the world. OTH

is considered among the largest and most diversified network operator in the Middle East,

Africa and Pakistan. It is a leading mobile telecommunications company operating in seven

emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia having a population under

license of 460 million in total population with an average penetration of mobile telephony

rate across all markets of 8%. Orascom Telecom operates GSM networks in Algeria

("Djezzy"), Egypt ("MobiNil"), Pakistan ("Mobilink"), Iraq ("IraQna"), Bangladesh

("Banglalink"), Tunisia ("Tunisiana") and Zimbabwe ("Telecel Zimbabwe"). Orascom

Telecom subscriber number reached over 20 million subscribers as of June, 2005.

Orascom Telecom's operation in Pakistan, Mobilink, started its operations in 1994, and until

early 2001, had a market share of 40%. In April 2001, OTH took over management control of

the company and as of June, 2005; Mobilink served more than 7 million subscribers,

representing a market share of approximately 61% of total mobile subscribers in Pakistan.

Orascom Telecom has positioned itself as a leader in the region for its diverse GSM

operations, with various GSM support and Internet operations. One of Orascom Telecom's

main strategies is to create its own non-GSM subsidiaries to act as a support for its regional

GSM operations. OTH has achieved this by dedicating financial, technical, and management

resources for its subsidiaries. This includes network support and installation of GSM

operations, equipment procurement, handset procurement and distribution companies, value

Added Services, and Internet operations.

OTH is dedicated to provide the best quality services to its customers, value to shareholders,

and a dynamic working environment for its nearly 11,000 employees.

• Mobile communications is often linked with an increase in productivity. In Pakistan,

numerous ways of how mobile communications impacts productivity have been
identified. The telecom industry in Pakistan has also directly created economic value
through wage and employee benefits; contractor costs; taxes and regulatory fees;
corporate social responsibility and dividends. The growth of mobile communications
and the corresponding positive social and economic impact represent a significant
success story. Mobile communications have transformed the way in which business is
conducted – in Pakistan mobile communication has revolutionized the way people do
business.

 They prefer their own employees and go outside only when fully qualified person is
not obtainable.

Following are some issues of HRM in Mobilink

 The timing although is 9 am to 5 pm, but it is adhered to as the normal employee

leaves his office not before 6 am.

 The hierarchy chart shows 3 HR managers/ coordinators for Islamabad, here as only 1
fore Lahore. This can be unjustified keeping in view that a large number of employee
work in Lahore.

 Mobilink has a formal environment which can be changed to more relax and friendly
environment.

Success of the products:

Mobilink.............................Reshaping Lives! IIUI
April 10,
Project Of Mobilink
2008

The main success of Mobilink products is Over 5000 cities coverage, because the most of
population is live in villages and small town.

2nd main thing is they product re-engineering process is very quick, according to the market
demand

Largest Subscriber base amongst the cellular companies in Pakistan;

• Network more expanded than any other telecom company even in CHITRAL
now.
• ISO 9002 Quality Management System Certification for Billing, Engineering
Departments, continuous improvement is their main focus and as well CS Contact
Center.
• Implementation of a full Intelligent Network (IN) platform from Siemens for the
prepaid platform.
• Biggest Call Center in Pakistan, which is there to assist the customers 24 hours.
• First cellular service in Pakistan to provide network quality coverage on the M2
motorway.
• The first organized cellular network with proper customer care centers in Pakistan
on different regions.
• Bilateral roaming agreements signed with 100 countries around the world to have
true roaming service operational in 151 operators of the world.
• Mobilink GSM's allows Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Management services that are
being provided by Tracker (Pvt.) Ltd., under the brand name of C-Track, a
company licensed by Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA). Tracker currently
operates from Karachi but can provide these facilities at all those locations where
GSM coverage is available.

Failure of the Products:

As per market survey and market experience on Mobilink I found the feed back two products
that are most unsuccessful products of Mobilink.
1. Mobilink PCO.
2. Black Barry
The failure of the PCO is:
• High cost PCO set
• The high call rate
• The Billing issues
• PCO set malfunctioning
• Card charging Issues

The failure of the Black Barry is:

• High cost of Black Barry set
• Less user friendly
• The high call rate

Mobilink.............................Reshaping Lives! IIUI

April 10,
Project Of Mobilink
2008

• The Billing issues

• Not applicable at all class.

Service get low standard during bulk sale days due to low uncommitted engineering.
Call rates are high as compare to other net work

Stress on maximizing the customer instead of retaining existing customers i.e. providing
efficient and satisfactory services to the existing customers.

They provide fewer opportunities for the career development of their low level employees
like BDO’s.

Company doesn’t have enough HR to meet the customer requirements so they have to out
source the employees, very less engineering staff as well.

Company doesn’t have any motivational strategy for the low level employees so that lots of
employees switched when new companies launched.

A lot of shuffling in the upper management of the company due to which the company had to
face many full stops during the main run.

MNP
MNP stands for Mobile no Portability. The recent failure of the products of Mobilink is MNP.
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) enables mobile telephone users to retain their mobile
telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. Now this is
the big challenge that is facing by the Mobilink.

Cricket SIM:

The other flop product of Mobilink is cricket sim. Jazz cricket was launched at the time of
world cup 2007.
Due to the loss of Pakistan cricket team in first round of the cricket world cup the jazz
cricket sim didn’t made place in the market

■ Future prospect of the organization

Mobilink has the following strengths due to which it is competing to other competitor as a
Leader of the telecommunication industry.

MULTINATIONAL EXPERIENCE:
MOBILINK has the multinational experience greater than other telecommunication
companies but one company “Telenor” has come into the market if we see in Pakistan
MOBILINK is competing to Telenor bitterly than others due to Multinational Experience.

FINANCIAL RESOURCES:
MOBILINK has the large scale financial resources due to which it can face any contingency
situation that can be occur in telecommunication industry. MOBILINK also uses these
resources in the development of the society and internal stakeholders as employees in sense
of compensating to employees through incentives, bonuses and other type of allowances to
increase the moral of them.

BRAND LOYALTY
From the past era of the MOBILINK business life cycle, MOBILINK has got the greatest
amount of Customer brand loyalty in Pakistan that has become the strength of the
MOBILINK to which MOBILINK has achieved. People here in Pakistan feel enjoying good
status while using this cellular service.

GOOD LARGE COVERAGE

In Pakistan, MOBILINK has the large scale network area of providing the services to the
customers than others; it is the also strong strength of the MOBILINK because new coming
companies are hiring the network of MOBILINK to provide their services to customers.
LOW EMPLOYEE TURNOVER
In MOBILINK, there is very low employee turnover rate due to large amount of incentives,
bonuses and ideal salary package; other factor is better job security than other competitors of
telecommunication industry.

• Contemporary Issues Raise in Mobilink

Mobilink in Pakistan is bigger cellular company but in Mobilink some issue has raised
about service due to increase in competition. Some issues are there;

1. Issue about the calling rates:

No doubt, Mobilink is the most widely used and a favorite (may be) cellular company of
Pakistan. Where most of its customer line is satisfied with the quality services, there
exists a big community of "dissatisfied customers" as well. They are confused with the
calling rates (even they are lower than before) when they check their remaining balance
after ending a call. They don’t think that Mobilink is charging them according to the call
rates for what they speak about in TV commercials and other print-medias. This
disappointment has already shifted millions of Mobilink valued customers to use the
services of their competitors mainly: Warid and Telenor. Warid attracted many millions of
potential-customers and won their trust by working on "Transparency Policies". When a
Warid user ends a call, he/she immediately receives a message detailing about the cost of
the current call and remaining balance. If I am not wrong, this policy partially helped
Warid to penetrate in Pakistani consumer market. I think Mobilink should also follow this
policy to keep its customers more reliable and attached.

If I compare Mobilink or Warid with Telenor then I can see that Telenor is a company
which believes in bringing innovation. They have world's most advanced cellular
technology and their mobile services are un-match able to both. Mobilink also believes in
innovation but they should work on this tool also. LFO (Learn From Competitor). If any
service is announced by any of its competitor then Mobilink should also add this service
to its services list. This will certainly become a psychological threat for its competitors
and on the same time it will ensure immense increase in their customer’s line. If Telenor
can raise the list of their customers by introducing new services to mobile users then why
Mobilink is not following the strategies of its direct competitors? Sometimes following
pays more than leading

2. Issue of Signal of Mobilink Service:

When we search about the issues in Mobilink, the most common issue in Pakistan is week
signal of Mobilink. Thousands of claims has made against the signal problem of
Mobilink. When we searched about the issue in Petition Spot site, overall hundreds of
petitions are there against the complaint of week signal. Some are written there.

Mobilink.............................Reshaping Lives! IIUI

April 10,
Project Of Mobilink

a) Salma. I totally agree. Mobilink should be banned and all of their management
should be hanged.
b) Shazia KhajaWarid. Telenor is much better. Mobilink Sucks.
c) Sadia Khan. I totally agree. It never works when you need it. And call rates are very
expensive.
d) Salman Ahmedyar. ML is the worst company in the world. All the time signals down
and service is just sucked as up. I abord using this brand. But what can we say, in
Pakistan we are all corrupt from top to down. so there is no use such efforts there is
no use of it
e) Shaista Zaidi. Mobilink is an unethical company. They have a bad network and
sometiemes SMSs don't reach while they deduct you’re hard earned money.
f) Shamim. I agree with contents here, but would be frank in my analysis that there is
'no' such service of MNOs that we may term as better. Mobilink being the biggest is
the centre of attention always, but everyone else including Ufone, Warid, Telenor,
Paktel has their own share of customer infringement issues. The battle is against poor
service and not against one player.
g) Aijaz Hassan. I am using Mobilink and other cell no Mobilink is not giving me good
serves as compare to Warid an Telenor they r more cheaper and giving good service
like Telenor is giving miss call let free of cost and
h) Mohammad. I totally agree. It never works when you need it. And call rates are very
expensive
i) Adeel Farooq. I totally agree. It never works when you need it. And call rates are very

j) Farah Usman. Mobilink is an unethical company. They have a bad network and
sometiemes SMSs don't reach while they deduct you’re hard earned money.
Solution:
1. Company must invest more for services not for advertisement.
2. Company must increase the customer loyalty by providing full time service like 24
hours and should increase the numbers of towers all over the Pakistan.
3. Company must take initiative step for new offers before the competitors.
4. Company must invest more money towards new service which attract customers and
also retain others which are already having customer of company.
For solving these issues Mobilink CEO invest $500 million in 2008 with main objective
to retain the customer and also meet the challenge of competition. His also mission is to
expand the network more city.

Mobilink.............................Reshaping Lives! IIUI

April 10,
Project Of Mobilink
2008

According to Naguib Sawiris, chairman of Orascom Telecom, said: "Our success in

having reached this significant milestone is not just about large-scale investments,
infrastructure and world-class services alone but being a 5,000-people organization,
where every family member has played their role."
