Since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law, unscrupulous scammers have been creating

ways to take advantage of consumers uncertainty surrounding the law. Valley County residents have been targeted, and Tom Mills of St. Marie received a phone call regarding a medical discount card. A lady will call you with your personal information, your name, age, address and everything and she was very convincing, Tom says. I think theyre targeting us older folks. Dont be misled, no matter what your age! Should you receive an unsolicited phone call asking for personal information such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers or Social Security numbers, its a red flag to a scam. Always STOP before writing a check or giving out any personal information. If you or someone you know has been a victim of this sort of scam or has received such a call, you are asked to please contact the Valley County Sheriff Department at 228-4333. Also call your bank and/or credit card company to stop any charges.

Taking advantage of no school this past Friday and FWPs Early Youth Deer Hunt at Fall Break, 13-year-old Cordelia Nickels harvested this awesome 5x6 mule deer buck somewhere up there in the north country. A second-year hunter with help from Uncle Ty, Cordelia is the daughter of Jesse Nickels of Nashua and Jennifer Nickels of Glasgow. Way to go Peanut! Youre giving your brother Lane a run for his money this year!

Winter Weather Awareness Week:

Tuesday - Winter Weather Climatology
Every year, winter claims dozens of lives and causes millions of dollars in damage across the United States. A significant higher number of injuries occur; seventy percent of which are the result of vehicle accidents. Just in Montana since 2000, 14 people have lost their lives in extreme winter weather conditions with many more injuries. Cold weather exposure and automobile accidents are the main causes of winter weather related deaths in Montana. Livestock injuries and deaths can also be quite common during the more hazardous events. The following are some of the causes of both direct and indirect deaths and injuries in Montana as well as causes of damage: Extreme wind chill or extreme cold (within a home and outside) Vehicle accidents Avalanches Leaving a shelter such as a home or vehicle Carbon monoxide poisoning from an incorrectly set up generator or vehicle exhaust obstructed by snow Collapse of structures from heavy snow loading Fallen tree branches due to heavy snow HORSE PROPERTY

Where did she get that notion?

(Anonymous) My wife hosted a dinner party for family far and wide and everyone was encouraged to bring all their children as well. All during dinner my four-year-old niece, who was sitting directly across the table, stared at me. The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food, patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried my best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for me. I finally asked her, Why are you staring at me? Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior and the table went quiet for her response. My little niece said, Im just waiting to see how you drink like a fish.

Disease outbreak again impacts white-tailed deer in Region 6

An outbreak of disease has again impacted white-tailed deer numbers in some areas of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6, state wildlife officials say. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, commonly known as EHD, has been confirmed through laboratory examinations of tissue taken from several deceased white-tailed deer in the Havre area, said Region 6 Wildlife Program Manager Mark Sullivan. The affected area where whitetails were reported dead earlier this fall ranges primarily west of Harlem and essentially covers the western third of Region 6, Sullivan said. Other widespread EHD outbreaks have also recently been confirmed in several other areas of the state, including FWP Region 4 to the south and west. EHD is an acute, infectious, often-fatal viral disease of some wild ruminants, especially white-tailed deer. The disease, characterized by extensive hemorrhaging, fever, and a resultant urge to be near or even immersed in temperaturecontrolling water, has been responsible for significant die-offs over the years in the northern United States and southern Canada. A major EHD outbreak also took place in FWP Region 6 in 2011 and was primarily centered in the Glasgow area along the Milk River where whitetailed deer numbers had been at record highs. A similar hemorrhagic disease commonly called bluetongue also occurs throughout the U.S. and Canada, but the two diseases are clinically different. Both diseases can affect mule deer and pronghorn antelope, but not as much as white-tailed deer. Outbreaks of EHD most commonly occur during the summer and early fall, and animals contracting highly virulent strains can die as quickly as one to three days after exposure. The disease is spread by tiny biting midges, but hard frosts kill the insects and end the outbreaks, at least for the year. When the insect activity slowed down with the cooler weather, apparent EHD-caused deaths started decreasing, Sullivan said, adding that a few scattered reports of dead whitetails also came

in from the Glasgow and Malta areas earlier this fall. However, we werent able to take samples from those animals because they were too decomposed by the time they were discovered, he said. The reports were also very few in number. Sullivan noted that whitetail numbers in the Glasgow area are still recovering from a series of harsh winters and the 2011 EHD outbreak. Deer hunters should take note and plan accordingly. Whitetail numbers remain good in the northeastern portion of Region 6, he said. No EHD was reported there in 2011 or this year.

Trick or Treat for the Troops

The children at Action for Eastern Montana Glasgow Head Start are going to Trick or Treat for the Troops on Thursday, October 31st, accompanied by soldiers from the 484th Military Police Company. Instead of having their treat bags open for candy for themselves they will be asking for treats that can be sent to the Troops overseas by the St. Marie Womens Club. On Halloween Day, the children will travel to participating businesses to show their costumes and pick up the donations that will be brought back to the Glasgow Head Start Center. They are inviting any and all community members to add to the items that have been donated by Head Start parents, staff and businesses. There is a donation box outside the front door of the Centers classroom located at 839 1st Avenue South and a donation box at the VFW Post 3107, Hwy. 2 . On Friday, November 1st the children will then make a presentation of all items collected to the St. Marie Womens Club to send overseas. The Treats that can be shared with our service men and women include but are not limited to:
