AP-8X CHASSIS POWER SUPPLY EXPLANATION

The power supply in the AP-8X chassis works very similar to the previous models, with some very significant exceptions. This power supply runs at 50% when the AC is applied with the set OFF. The use of the power supply creating the A12V supply eliminates the need for a Stand-By transformer. The following explanation will describe the Turning ON and OFF of the projection television. (Coming soon, Power Supply Operation in Stand-By mode explanation for more details).

Power Supply Frequency of Operation During Run

When the Horizontal deflection is in operation, the power supply frequency fluctuates in accordance to screen brightness, causing differing demands for High Voltage replacement. The normal operational range for the power supply is between 30 KHz to 50 KHz. The lower the frequency, the higher the current supplied to the load. During Stand-By, it operates at 20KHz.

Power Supply Shutdown Explanation

This chassis utilizes I901 as the Osc.\Driver \Switch for the power supply, just as the previous chassis have done. This IC is very similar to the previous versions, however it does differ in Frequency, (described previously) and in Stand-By detection. The Shutdown circuit, (cold ground side detection), is routed to I901 via a common circuit. This circuit is comprised of Q914 (the Shutdown SCR), I902 (the Photo Coupler), which isolates the Hot ground from the Cold ground and couples the Shutdown signal to the Hot Ground side, and I901 pin 7 (the 100% Dead time pin, See Figure 1.) All of the Power Supply Shutdown circuitry can be broken down into the following groups; Voltage Missing Detection Excessive Current Detection Voltage Too High Detection In the following explanation, the Shutdown circuits will be grouped, this will assist the Service Technician with trouble shooting the Chassis, by understanding these circuits and having the associated circuit routs, the technician can then Divide and Conquer.

Commonly Used Shutdown Detection Circuits Excessive Current Detection. (See Figure 2 on Next Page)
One very common circuit used in many Hitachi television products is the B+ Excessive Current Sensing circuit. In this circuit is a low ohm resistor in series with the particular power supply, (labeled B+ in the drawing). The value of this resistor is determined by the maximum current allowable within a particular power supply. In the case of Figure 2, the value is shown as a 0.47 ohm, however it could be any low ohm value. When the current demand increases, the voltage drop across the resistor increases. If the voltage drop is sufficient to reduce the voltage on the base of the transistor, the transistor will conduct, producing a Shutdown signal that is directed to the appropriate circuit.

Voltage Loss or Excessive Load Detection (See Figure 3)

The second most common circuit used is the Voltage Loss Detection circuit. This is a very simple circuit that detects a loss of a particular power supply and supplies a Pull-Down path for the base of a PNP transistor. (See Figure 3) This circuit consist of a diode connected by its cathode to a positive B+ power supply. Under normal conditions, the diode is reversed biases, which keeps the base of Q1 pulled up, forcing it OFF. However, if there is a short or excessive load on the B+ line, the diode in effect will have a LOW on its cathode, turning it ON. This will allow a current path for the base bias of Q1, which will turn it ON and generates a Shutdown Signal.

B+ Voltage Too High Detection. (See Figure 4)

In this circuit, a Zener diode is connected to a voltage divider or in some cases, directly to a B+ power supply. If the B+ voltage increases, the voltage at the voltage divider or the cathode of the zener diode will rise. If it gets to a predetermined level, the zener will fire. This action creates a Shutdown Signal.

Any Positive B+ Supply

Shut-Down Signal

Figure 4

Negative Voltage Loss Detection. (See Figure 5)

The purpose of the Negative Voltage Loss detection circuit is to compare the negative voltage with its counter part positive voltage. If at any time, the negative voltage drops or disappears, the circuit will produce a Shutdown signal. In Figure 5, there are two resistors of equal value. One to the positive voltage, (shown here as +12V) and one to the negative voltage, (shown here as -12V). At their tie point, (neutral point), the voltage is effectually zero (0) volts. If however, the negative voltage is lost due to an excessive load or defective negative voltage regulator, the neutral point will go positive. This in turn will cause the zener diode to fire, creating a Shutdown Signal.

In the figure below, (See Figure 6) is a block diagram indicating all of the Shutdown inputs that will stop the power supply. There are a total of 22 individual Shutdown inputs. In addition, there are also two Shutdown inputs that are specifically detected by the main power driver IC, I901 that protect it from excessive current or over voltage.

Any one of these circuits activated will STOP the power supply, and create a Power Supply Shutdown Condition. (See the X-Ray Shutdown Diagram on page 02-07) (Also see the X-Ray Protect Circuit Diagram on page 02-08)

(Continued on page 5)

Page 02-05
Trouble Shooting the Power Supply Shutdown Circuit
The AP-83 utilizes some Visual Reference LEDs to determine the operational state of the Power Supply. The following Voltages are monitored by a GREEN LED. (See Diagram on Page 02-09 for details). 27V -M27V TV9V TV5V Deflection B+ (120V) Audio 32V A12V There is also a RED LED (D912), that monitors the condition of I901, which is the Power Supply Driver IC. The service technician can observe these LEDs and make a determination if the power supply is operational. As stated previously, this power supply operates even if the set is OFF. This condition is call Stand-By. While the Power Supply is in Stand-By, there are several things the Service Technician should observe, utilizing these LEDs. First When the Set is in Stand-By All of the LEDs should by ON except the TV9V and the TV5V LEDs. These two voltages are OFF in Stand-By. Second When the Set is turned ON The RED L.E.D., (D912) should be ON anytime the set is plugged into AC voltage. Normal brightness is when the set is operating normally. In the AP-83, this RED L.E.D. also has a condition where it Blinks. If there is a Shutdown condition that arrives from any of the 22 Shutdown inputs described previously, the L.E.D. Blinks On/Off repeatedly. Anytime the Power Supply is in Shutdown, none of the green L.E.Ds. should be ON. If there is a condition that creates a load on a B+ line which is monitored by a Green LED, the Service Technician should carefully observe all Green L.E.Ds. during turn ON. If it is detected that one of the Green L.E.Ds. attempt to come ON or possibly never comes ON, then that particular B+ source should be investigated for a loaded condition. This may be very difficult to determine because the set will Shutdown quickly, due to the Excessive Load or Short Detection circuitry. When the RED L.E.D. is found to be Blinking, then the Service Technician must begin to isolate the Shutdown inputs to determine from which detection circuit the Shutdown is being generated. Generally, the first step should be to remove the Deflection B+ fuse (E994). (Please note, during this process, the Deflection and High Voltage circuits will be defeated. The Heater circuit is monitored by the Shutdown circuit. If its lost, the set will shutdown. To allow the Power Supply to operate, it is necessary to defeat this circuit when removing the Fuse E994. To defeat the Heater Loss Circuit, lift one end of D724). This will deactivate the most common Shutdown inputs created from a defective Deflection circuit generally caused by a shorted Horizontal Output Transistor. If at this time the Power Supply returns to operation, investigate the Horizontal Output Transistor and all circuits providing an input to the X-Ray Protect path. (See the X-Ray Shutdown Diagram on page 02-07) (Also see the X-Ray Protect Circuit Diagram on page 02-08) The most common areas to investigate are Shorted Vertical Output IC Open R737 (Heater output from Flyback) If by removing E994, the Power Supply doesnt return to normal operation, further isolation is necessary. One of the most common circuits to investigate is Shorted Rear Audio Output IC If this circuit checks normal, begin by removing Q913. WARNING When Q913 is removed, the Power Supply Short Detection circuits are defeated. Remove the CRT PWBs to prevent Burning of the CRTs and use Quick cycling On/Off of the set. These cautions MUST BE OBSERVED.
(Continued on page 6)

Page 02-06
If at this time the Power Supply returns to normal operation, investigate; Shorted Front/Center Audio Output IC Short on the TV9V line Short on the TV5V line These suggestions are the most common areas to investigate for fault. Other circuit areas that may need investigation are; shorted 5V line or the -M12V line is too high, (negatively). These recommendations are the most common circuits areas to check. There are other circuits that can cause Shutdown, please utilize the Power Supply Shutdown Circuit diagram for a complete list. (See the X-Ray Shutdown Diagram on page 02-07) (Also see the X-Ray Protect Circuit Diagram on page 02-08) The Figure on page 7 represents all of the X-Ray Protect inputs feed back to the Shutdown SCR from the Deflection PWB side.

AP-8X X-RAY PROTECT Circuit Diagram. (See the X-Ray Protect Circuit Diagram on page 02-08)
Any high generated from the Deflection Circuit Shutdown sensing circuit will be routed out the X-Ray Protect line to the Power Supply and generate a Shutdown event.

Heater Loss Detection Circuitry

This circuit is a new addition for Hitachi product. Its responsibility is to monitor for a loss of the Heater voltage. Since the Heater voltage is utilized for the Excessive High Voltage Detection circuit; it is necessary to monitor the source voltage used by this circuit. If a circumstance arose, in which the Heater voltage disappeared, such as the opening of R737, then there would be NO Excessive High Voltage Detection. To prevent the operation of the set without High Voltage Detection, the Circuit comprised of Q710, D723, D721, and D721 constantly monitors the Heater Voltage. If for some reason the Heater voltage disappeared, the two zeners would no longer supply pull-up voltage to the base of Q710. This would cause the base voltage to decrease on the base of Q710 and a high would be impressed on the anode of D725. This would cause the set to Shutdown.

Vertical Output IC Excessive Current Detection.

Q609 monitors the V26V power supply to I601 (Vertical Output IC). If this IC draws too much current, the base voltage of Q609 will drop turning it on. Its Collector will go high. This high is routed through D615 to the X-Ray protect line shutting down the Power Supply.

Vertical Charge Pump Capacitor Leakage Detection.

D606 monitors the Charge Pump Capacitor C614. If this capacitor leaks, the voltage will rise on D606 anode generating a shutdown event.

Excessive High Voltage Detection.

D709 monitors the Heater Voltage. This voltage will reflect the status of the High voltage, but its a much lower voltage and easier to handle. If this voltage goes too high indicating that High Voltage is too high, the diode will fire. The heater voltage is generated by the pulse output from the Flyback T702 being rectified by D712 and filtered by C731.

12V Line Too High Detection.

D607 monitors the 12V line. If this voltage goes too high, the zener will fire generating a shutdown event through D606. .

POWER SUPPLY ON AND OFF (STAND-BY) OPERATION EXPLANATION

The power supply in the AP-8X chassis works very similar to the previous models, with only a few exceptions. This power supply runs all the time when the AC is applied. The use of the power supply creating the A12V supply eliminates the need for a Stand-By transformer. The following explanation will describe the Turning ON and OFF of the projection television. (See the Power Supply On and Off Circuit Diagram on page 02-13) The Microprocessor generates the ON-OFF control signal as before, with the exception that there is no Relay Driver. The schematic shows a relay driver Q003, however it is in parentheses. This means that the component doesnt exist in the set. This On/Off control will perform the following : Turns on the regulation control signal Turns on the A5V and A9V regulator Turns on the Shut Down Power Shorted detection circuit Turns on the Horizontal Vcc supply to the Rainforest IC, I501 The Microprocessor outputs the On/Off control from Pin 35, to the PSD3 connector Pin 4. (See Figure 1) The active state is On = High and Off = Low. The high for Power On is then routed to Q908 and Q907. Q908 is turned On, removing the base bias for Q907. Q907 turns off and removes D948 from the circuit of Pin 2 of I905 which is the regulation error voltage feedback line for the regulator IC, I901.

Q908

Q907 D948

Fig. 1 The purpose of D948 during Stand-By, is to create a false feedback that artificially compensates for the reduction in output voltage when the power supply switches to a lower frequency. However, due to another factor, this doesnt cause the power supply frequency to rise to maximum which will be described next. HORIZONTAL B+ DEFEAT CIRCUIT: (See Figure 2) When the power supply goes into Stand-By mode, the Horizontal Drive signal for deflection is shut off. This is accomplished by Q916 and Q917. The Low out produced from the Power On/ Off pin 35 of the Microprocessor is detected by the base of Q916. This allows the collector voltage to go high. This action turns off Q917 which removes the B+ from its collector. The Collector of Q917 is connected to the Deflection B+ pin 22 of the Rainforest IC, I501 via pin 3 of the PSD2 connector and Pin 13 of the PSI1 connector. This action stop I501 from producing a horizontal deflection drive signal.

Fig. 2

POWER SUPPLY OPERATIONAL FREQUENCY DURING STAND-BY: (See Figure 3) When the Horizontal deflection is defeated, the power supply no longer has a deflection load. This low current demand is detected by the three resistors connected to the source of the internal Switch MOS FET inside I901 via pin 2. Pin 4 of I901 is the over current detection pin, however it is also the current demand sensing pin. When the current demand is low due to horizontal defeat, pin 4 will be less that 1.4V and the internal frequency will switch to 20Khz. This is caused by the Quasi Resonant circuit operation which is covered in a Hi-Lite article. This reduction of power supply frequency will move the frequency below the Bell of the power supply transformer and all secondary voltages will reduce to approximately 1/2 of their normal voltage. Due to the fact that the power supply is still operating at 1/2 voltage output, the Green LEDs used for visual trouble sensing will reduce in intensity, however they will remain lit. With the exception of the TV9V and TV5V regulator.

POWER SUPPLY ON AND OFF (STAND-BY) OPERATION EXPLANATION

TV9V AND TV5V REGULATOR OPERATION IN STAND-BY: (See Figure 4) Both of these ICs as well as the A12V regulator are DC to DC converters just like last year. This is because of the wide range of input voltages from Stand-By to Normal operation of the Power Supply. The TV9V regulator (I912) and the TV5V regulator (I913) are shut off during Stand-By mode. This is accomplished by Q906 and Q905. When the low for the power On/Off pin 35 of the Microprocessor is detected by Q906, its collector will go high. This action will turn ON Q905 and its collector will go low. This will pull pin 5 of I912 and I913 low, turning off the two DC to DC converters. I001 Micro

SOME SHUT-DOWN DETECTION CIRCUITS SHUT OFF DURING STAND-BY: (See Figure 5) During Stand-By, all of the secondary voltages are reduced to approximately 50% of their normal voltage. This could cause a potential problem with the Short Detection circuits for shutdown. To avoid accidental shut down, Q906 also controls the activity of Q905. During Stand-By, Q906 is turned off. This allows the Base of Q905 to be pulled up which turns on Q905 and its collector voltage is low. Q918 is also turned off because its base voltage is pulled low through D975. This prevents any pull-up voltage from appearing on the emitter of Q913. The base of Q913 is connected to 6 Low Detection inputs, (see AP-8X Power Supply Shut Down Circuit). When the power supply operates at 50%, the Short Detection circuit could activate. By turning off Q913, no accidental shut down operation can occur. For added protection, Q912 also prevents any Shut-Down voltage from reaching the Gate of Q914, which is the Shut-Down SCR latch.

AP-7X and AP-8X CHASSIS I901 (Regulator IC) EXPLANATION

I901 POWER SUPPLY DRIVER IC EXPLANATION POWER SUPPLY OPERATES IN TWO MODES: STAND-BY: During this mode, in which the set is plugged in but not on, the Power Supply will be running. During the initial plug up of AC, the voltage will rise Pin 5 of I901. See below for INSIDE I901 information about pin 5. During Stand-By all secondary voltages should be approx. 1/2 their normal voltages. Except voltages on the output side of a DC-DC converter. Example: A12V POWER-ON: See the Power On Explanation and Circuit Diagram for details. All output voltages are normal. INSIDE I901 (The POWER SUPPLY DRIVER and POWER SWITCH IC). The responsibility of I901 is to maintain an accurate Deflection B+ during set operation. This prevents any abnormal fluctuations in screen size, brightness and/or focus. By stabilizing the Deflection B+ at 120Vdc, all other voltages generated from the secondary of the Main Power Transformer will remain stable as well. There are a couple of pin functions of I901 that will be helpful to understand in the event some troubleshooting is necessary. PIN 5 VIN (VOLTAGE INPUT) EXPLANATION: (See I901 Internal Circuit Diagram) START UP VOLTAGE: Is generated by taping the AC input to the Power Supply Bridge rectifier through a high ohm resistor R905 and R906 and filtering it with a capacitor C907. As the input voltage climbs, the internal current draw of I901 is low, approximately 100uA. When the DC component of Pin 5 reaches 22.5Vdc, the internal Oscillator begins to operate and the internal current draw of Pin 5 raises to approximately 20mA. The Start up circuit will keep the oscillator running as long as the voltage at Pin 5 remains above 15.1Vdc. (Note: The current demand of I901 is too strong for R905 and R906 to supply enough voltage to keep I901 running. See Blinking Red LED Explanation below for details.) The internal Oscillator time constant (Frequency determining RC network) is comprised of C2, C3, R5, R4 and the DC component fed back to Pin 6 and to Pin 4. The voltage at Pin 5 is reinforced, stabilized and held at approx. 22.5Vdc, due to the Run voltage. RUN VOLTAGE: Is generated from the Main Power Supply Switching Transformer T901 Pins 7 and 8. The pulses output from these pins are rectified by D905, D904 and filtered by C907. This voltage will be available in either Stand-By or Power On mode. The internal Oscillator would be producing an

input to the Drive circuit and generated from the Drive circuit, a Drive signal would be sent to the Gate of the Internal Switch MOSFET. This action turns on and off the Internal Switch MOSFET which switches ground return on and off for Pin 4 of T901. This action builds and collapses the field and secondary pulses are generated. Q901 acts as a regulator for Pin 5 voltage. Monitoring the voltage by its emitter. If the voltage drops, the transistor becomes more conductive and supplies more pull up voltage to Pin 5. X-RAY INPUT (PIN 7) OF I901 EXPLANATION: In the AP-7X and AP-8X chassis, 23 Shutdown inputs are detected. In the event that Pin 7 voltage exceeds 9.9Vdc, the internal comparators positive (+) leg goes higher that the negative (-) leg and this circuit triggers an input to the three input "OR" Gate and a Latch signal shuts OFF the Drive signal made available to the internal Switch MOSFET. Latch Circuit Operation There is an external LED connected to Pin 7 (D912 Red LED- See LEDs Circuit Diagram for details) which is used for visual detection of several things, (Visual Troubleshooting and Operational Check): Following is a list describing what can be obtained by observing the RED LED: 1. There is Oscillator B+ to pin 5 = LED glow is normal. 2. There is NO Oscillator B+ to pin 5 = LED glow is Off. 3. There is a X-Ray Shutdown input = LED Blinks. BLINKING RED LED EXPLANATION: The reason the LED blinks when the Latch circuit is activated is due to the following, when the Latch circuit operates and stops drive signals from reaching the Switch MOSFET, the secondary voltages that were produced by the Switch Mode Transformer (T901) are no longer generated. The DC voltage supplying Oscillator B+ to Pin 5 is now generated by the Start-up pull up resistors R905 and R906. However, the internal current draw of I901 exceeds the capability of this circuit to provide enough DC voltage to keep the internal oscillator running. In this case, the IC actually oscillates from OFF to ON. Initially when I901 goes into Shutdown, the current draw is around 20mA. The DC voltage at Pin 5 begins to decrease. When pin 5 reaches 15.1Vdc, the internal Start up circuit stops, which reduces the current draw to 100uA. This allows the DC voltage at Pin 5 to again climb back to 22.5V which again fires off the internal DC regulator and with the Latch Circuit in operation, the entire process repeats. To restore the IC and release the Latch circuit, unplug the set. This will cancel the Latch circuit operation by
(Continued on page 18)

PAGE 02-017

AP-7X and AP-8X CHASSIS I901 (Regulator IC) EXPLANATION

decreasing the VIN voltage at pin 5 below 8.6V (Typical). PIN 4 (OCP) INPUT PIN EXPLANATION: This pin serves as control for the internal Switch MOSFET drive circuit. Pin 4 has three functions, all of which are a non-latching state. In other words, if Pin 4 cause the power supply to stop, if the problem that caused the shutdown is removed, the power supply will resume operation. SOFT START: During the first few moments of turn on, when AC is applied, C913 is not charged. When DC is first applied by the internal DC regulator inside I901 from Pin 7, C913 passes this voltage to Pin 4. While Pin 4 is pulled up by this action, the internal drive signal is not output to the MOSFET. As C913 charges, Pin 4 voltage drops and the internal drive signal increases to the MOSFET. This action prevents high surge current because all secondary voltage filter capacitors are also charging. SPIKE DETECTION: In the event of a CRT anode quick discharge such as a Snap or Arch, the current demand on the power supply when the High Voltage drops would be excessive and could cause damage to the Driver IC. To prevent this Pin 4 monitors for spikes in current draw. If a spike is sensed, the drive to the MOSFET is decreased until the spike disappears. EXCESSIVE MOSFET CURRENT DETECTION: In the event the MOSFET is placed in a damaging demand for current supply, there are three resistors that monitor the current through the MOSFET. R917, R986 and R987 (each 0.1 ohm). The Voltage drop across these resistors is monitored by Pin 4. If the voltage exceeds a given value, the drive to the MOSFET is disappears until the excessive voltage detection drops back to a safe level.

S-JACK AND COMPONENT INPUT EXPLANATION

AP-8X COMPONENT IDIOSYNCRASIES: See AP-8X AUTO LINK DETECTION CIRCUIT When the S-Jack is inserted, it always takes priority. Incorporated into each S-Jack, is a mechanical switch. This switch is utilized by the Selector IC, IY01 and notifies the IC whene ver an S-Jack is inserted. (Note that the S-In selection is not dependent upon having active Y/C available). The switch grounds the S input detection pins as follows; Pin 12 for S-1 Pin 18 for S-2 Pin 6 for S-3 When any one of these pins are grounded and that particular Input is selected via the INPUT button on the front control panel or the remote control, internally the IC will switch over to only look at S-In for that input. Example: Normally when AVX. 1 is selected, the selector IC will accept input from pin 7 which is the Video 1 input pin. If however, Pin 12 is low, then the IC will only accept input from pin 9 and 11. This information is important related to the Component inputs. Included in the Component Y input jack is another mechanical switch. When there is NO Component input jack connected, this switch is normally closed. This routes the S-In Y component to pin 15 of IY01. When a Component jack is inserted, the mechanical switch within the Component jack opens and disengages the S-In Y path, preventing noise. The component Y is routed to three places; 1) To Pin 16 of I503. (Component Selector IC) 2) To transistor QA80, which energizes the electronic switch Q009. This loops key out to key in, notifying the Microprocessor that there is a component input. 3) To Pin 15 of IY01, (Selector IC). This route is not used. When the Microprocessor detects component in at pin 33 and it doesnt detect S-In at Pin 21, the Microprocessor output a Component selection command from Pin 48, through the PSI2 connector, arriving at Pins 2, 7 and 12 of I503

AP-8X CHASSIS ABL CIRCUIT EXPLANATION

SEE AP-8X Chassis ABL CIRCUIT DIAGRAM FOR DETAILS: Page 04-02

he ABL voltage is generated from the ABL pin of the Flybact transformer, T702. The ABL pull- up resistors are R-718 & R-719. They receive their pull up voltage from the 120V B+ for Deflection line generated from the Power Supply via T901 pin 15, rectified by D929, filtered by C929 and then routed through the excessive current sensing resistor R931. ABL VOLTAGE OPERATION:

Q-500 will go down, this will drop the emitter voltage which in turn drops the cathode voltage of D502. This in turn will pull voltage away from pin 45 of the Rainforest chip, IC501. Internally, this reduces the contrast and brightness voltage which is being controlled by the I2C buss data communication from the Microprocessor arriving at pin 27 and 28 of the Rainforest IC and reduces the overall brightness, preventing blooming. SUB BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT: I2C Alignment

he ABL voltage is determined by the current draw through the Flyback transformer. As the picture brightness becomes brighter or increases, the demand for replacement of the High Voltage being consumed is greater. In the case, the flyback will work harder and the current through the Flyback increases. This in turn will decrease the ABL voltage. The ABL voltage is inverse proportionate to screen brightness. Also connected to the ABL voltage line is D710. This zener diode acts as a clamp for the ABL voltage. If the ABL voltage tries to increase above 12V due to a dark scene which decreases the current demand on the flyback, the ABL voltage will rise to the point that D710 dumps the excess voltage into the 12 line. ACCL TRANSISTOR OPERATION:

he purpose for the Sub Brightness Adjustment alignment is to set up the Lo west DC level to which the Brightness control voltage can be set. Again, this voltage is controlled internally within I501 via I2C buss data. The adjustment is performed within the Service Menu, which is called Memory Initialization. To enter this adjustment menu, with the set turned off, press and hold the Input button, then press the Power button. This will bring up a Service Menu. Under the P.01 menu, the 9th selection is Sub Bright Adj. Selection is made using the buttons and adjusting the data values are made using the ? ? buttons. When this adjustment is not performed accurately, several problems can occur: Not enough brightness can be achieved Brightness cant be turned down completely When Brightness is turned to maximum, the picture can wash out the white peaks.

he ABL voltage is routed through the PSD2 connector to the base of Q-500. Under normal conditions, this transistor is nearly saturated. Q500 determines the voltage being supplied to the cathode of D502. D502 is connected to pin 45 of the Rainforest chip, IC-501. During an ABL voltage decrease, due to an excessive bright circumstance, the base of

Q703 down and allowing its EC current to increase. This action supplies additional current to the primary of T703, decreasing its secondary resonance. At this point the waveform at the collector of the horizontal output transistor will proportionately peak, generating an increase in the replacement high voltage. This function is performed to replenish the additional high voltage being consumed by the picture tube, thus avoiding blooming. (NOTE: This does not mean that the high voltage will rise. The high voltage is maintained at 30KV throughout the actions caused by the increase or decrease High Voltage replacement demands.) The figure below indicates the results of activity of the High Voltage Regulation/ Stability circuit on the collector of the horizontal output transistor.

igh Voltage Regulation is accomplished by Q702, Q703, and T703. T703 functions as an extension of the flyback transformer primary with the ability to vary its secondary resonance from 7 times the horizontal frequency, to no resonance at all. This is determined by the primary current of T703. The secondary resonance is inversely proportional to the primary current, i.e., if the primary current is high, the secondary resonance is low, and vice-versa. The ABL voltage supplies Q702 base voltage. Since ABL voltage is no higher than 12V with a dark picture, this is considered high, turning on Q702. This increases the voltage at its emitter, which is routed to the base of Q703 and holds Q703 off. In this condition, the EC current is low which is routed through the primary of T703 and the resonance of T703 is 7 times that of the horizontal frequency, placing a small dip in the collector waveform of the Horizontal Output Pulse. This is because the High Voltage r eplacement demand is low during this time. The emitter of Q703 is connected to 12V through the emitter load resistor, (R713). When there is a bright scene, there is also a corresponding reduction in the ABL voltage. Q702 conduction begins to decrease and the emitter potential drops, pulling the base of

PROPRIETARY TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION MODELS: 55UX58B SUBJECT: Critical information within the Service Manual addendum for the 55UX58B, (PA NO. 0107) was omitted.

This year the AP-62P chassis for the 50FX48B actually uses analog convergence. The Digital Convergence Units were removed from these chassis. To reduce waste, these DCAM's were used in the AP-83 chassis for the 55UX58B only. This required some minor deflection modifications but most obvious is that for these models, the DCAM is attached to the cabinet (similar to the older AP-5X/6X). They are NOT mounted directly to the Power/Defl. PWB. Once the AP-62 DCAM's were liquidated, production switched back to the standard AP-83 chassis for the 55UX58BA. (Note that the BA denotes actual AP83 chassis, NOT modified and the B only indicates a modified chassis). Below list typical FAQs related to the subject. QUESTION: When the Service Only button is pressed and held on the deflection PWB and then the Power Button to enter the Digital Convergence Adjustment Mode, (DCAM here after) with Cleared RAM, the set comes on in the normal picture mode, in this case tuner. The Dig. Conv. Module RAM was cleared like normal. To get the DCAM grid, the Service Only Button had to be pressed again. Is this normal? ANSWER: For DCAM adjustment on the AP-62P, reference the AP-62 Service Manual, (PA NO. 0070). Of course sometimes when DCAM data is cleared, the crosshatch does not appear and you must press the DCAM button 1 more time. This can happen no matter what DCAM is used. A note to this effect can be seen in section 2.7, page 20 of the AP-62 service manual PA NO. 0070. QUESTION: When pressing the EXIT button 5 times , the set would not toggle between the external video and DCAM. The service literature indicates that it will. Is this normal? ANSWER: Because this is a DCU from an AP-62 chassis, The ENTER button must be pressed 5 times to switch between Video and DCAM. QUESTION: The Service Literature also indicates that pressing the INFO button will perform the Interpolation process. However, pressing the INFO button did nothing. Is this normal? ANSWER: Again, because this is a DCU from an AP-62 chassis, you must use the AI button for interpolation. (See CLU-951MP remote). Also see the CLU-951MP remote for the following adjustments of the DCU in the AP-83P chassis, SRD to perform Phase adjustment.
