YMCA JANUARY 2014 Newsletter

Tree. Your support brought much joy to those who were displaced from their homes during this holiday season due to domestic violence and sexual assault. The Christmas season is one that for so many is filled with laughter, family traditions, and the comforts of home and health. At Safe Space, we see the other side of Christmas that is shadowed with fear, strange people and places, and a sense of defeat. With your generosity and support from the Angel Tree, you brought hope and a sense of normalcy to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. It was so heartwarming to see the relief in moms who, without your support, would have had nothing to give to their children for Christmas. Staff also saw tears weep from the eyes of those moms who were surprised to see gifts for them, too. Safe Space would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who donated to the Shelter itself. The office and shelter supplies, as well as, toys for the playroom assist us in continuing our quest to serve the survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The sense of community and generosity of our citizens never ceases to amaze me, and for this, we cannot thank you enough! Sincerely, Sarah Weber Executive Director

CEO CORNER
What a terrific year 2013 was for your YMCA. Amid so many changes, we found victory in strengthening programs, facilities, and events. Mavis Bentley joined our team changing Swim Lesson formats making them more effective and adding more than 100 registrants each session. For the first time since the opening in 2006 we found solutions for the leaking and climate problems that had plagued our building. For the most part, no more are the dozens of white buckets around to capture water. Temperatures of water and air has stabilized making it more comfortable for our members and protecting our structure. Active 6 concluded its first full year with 100% of Butte schools and their 6th graders participating. The Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation and PPL Montana joined in supporting the program with grants totaling $115,000. Our 3rd grade swim program became known as the Fritz Apostel Dream teaching more than 320 local kids about water safety made possible from the support of the Butte Ski Club Foundation providing a $5,200 grant and pledging future support. We concluded a successful capital campaign with so many businesses and leaders in our communitys support. A potential permanent solution is on the horizon. Dane Schroder joined our team as the new Aquatics Director and has made significant improvements in safety and enjoyment of our beautiful center. Record number of kids participated in special events such as Healthy Kids Day; Pumpkin Swim; Easter Swim; and the new Holiday Swim. For the first time, our Summer Camp and After School programs are at capacity and improving benefits to kids. Youth sports is as good as ever with increased participation. New Fitness Classes are bringing greater unity in fitness among our membership and drawing in the community. Stay tuned in 2014. The list goes on. We appreciate all our members and friends within the community and look for 2014 to be stupendous.

Pictured above with 150 presents for Butte families is Phillip Borup, YMCA CEO, being interviewed by ABC Fox News. The YMCA received the following letter: Dear YMCA Members: On behalf of Safe Space residents, their children, the Board of Directors, and myself, Id like to extend a huge heart felt thank you for the generous donations you made through the Angel

YMCA Success Stories!

A session of Adult Swim lessons started only a few months ago at the Y, and two adults have achieved amazing results. Christine Weekes had a huge fear of water. She timidly signed up for the swim session and wore a swim belt for the first few classes. Now after just 6 weeks, Christine is swimming in the deep end belt free, and has learned how to dive! When asked how she feels about her accomplishment, she quickly said great, awesome, happy. Dave Lubick remembers working out upstairs and watching people swim through the window and wondering if he could learn to swim. He said it has been a shock at how much physical endurance that swimming requires, and he hopes to continue to build his own endurance to swim greater distance. Way to go Christine and Dave!
