The document discusses the design of raft foundations. It states that when designing the bottom reinforcement of the raft, the value at the face of the column should be taken into account as shown in figure 12, with moments inside the column area disregarded. It also notes that due to concentrated forces at column locations, the soil bearing capacity should be checked using the conventional Navier stress equation rather than spring reactions from computer output. The document is authored by Dr. Hisham Arafat Mahdi for students of foundations projects at Sixth of October University's engineering faculty.

When designing the bottom reinforcement of the raft, the value at the face of the column shall be taken into account as shown in figure 12 below "section 1-1 and section 2-2". Accordingly, all moments represented by the moment contours inside the area of the columns should be disregarded.
Owing to the concentration of forces at the location of columns, it is crucial that the soil bearing capacity shall be checked using the conventional stress equation of Navier (equation 2) and not by the spring reactions determined from the computer output.
