Lesson Focus: Students will be able to: Analyze character development in a text Identify themes and motifs in a text Lesson Goals: Students will be able to: Recognize how the metaphor of blindness functions in the chapter Recognize what role race plays in determining social structure in the novel Materials: Invisible Man texts Procedures: Warm Up: Collect Close Reading writing assignment Pick 3 students to share questions from reading, to be answered during class, write on board Discussion: Ask each student to find one word from the chapter that is the most significant or most representative in the context of the entire chapter Go around the classroom and have each student share their words, teacher will categorize words based on overarching themes/symbols/motifs in the novel, highlighting three central aspects of chapter (Family) Influence of IMs grandfather o What is the significance of his last words? o Why does IM keep recalling his grandfathers words? (Blindness) What is blindness associated with in the chapter? Find quotes to support o Literal blindness, darkness, the unknown, loss of control, loss of dignity, clouded judgment (Speech) What is the difference between social responsibility and social equality? o Why do the white men get angry at the slip of social equality? How does this represent a disruption of the societys values, norms, expectations? What is the purpose of this chapter? What is its function in the novel? What structure is established between IM and the white men that could reappear throughout the rest of the novel?
