Born in France on March 14, 1824, Father Bouvier was the first Parish Priest of St. Francis
Xavier. It was he who completed the frame church started by Father McNulty and, in 1853, the bell
was blessed and the Stations of the Cross erected. Shortly after this, he undertook to have a
stone church built in Springtown, at that time a mission of St. Francis Xavier. He also had a
presbytery built in 1863 which would serve as the residence for priests until replaced in 1920.
Father Bouvier was transferred to Portage Du Fort, Quebec in 1854 but returned to Renfrew in
September of 1862. True to form, he started the construction of a stone church but was unable to
complete it. This would one day become the first St. Francis Xavier, parts of which are still
standing. In July of 1865, Rev. Paul Rougier joined Father Bouvier as curate and it was he who
eventually completed this structure.
Father Bouvier returned to France in 1866. He came back to Canada to serve in Arnprior and
Osceola. He died in Osceola in 1879.
