FROM 1848-PRESENT
In the beginning, Yglesia Mision y Cavezera de Bergara dela Nueva Guipozcoa was under the
Obispado de Cebu until May 27, 1865 of which the Diocese of Jaro in Iloilo took over. From
1848-1859 (11 yrs.), the parish was under the guidance of the following Recollect Friars:
On January 30, 1857 – the once called Yglesia Mision de Cavezera de Bergara dela Nueva
Guipuzcoa became Parroquial de San Pedro Apostol de Dabao. The first Parish Priest was Rev.
Fr. Toribio Sanchez. Then succeeded by:
From 1860-1937 (77 yrs.), the parish was under the pastoral care of the Jesuit Friars:
On August 15, 1878, Bishop Mariano Cuartero, OP, Bishop of Jaro, made his First Pastoral Visit
of the Parish and solemnized the Sacrament of Confirmation to the parishioners.
On April 10, 1910, the parish was under the episcopal care of the Diocese of Zamboanga. During
that time, the Local Ordinary was Bishop Michael James O’Doherty. He was succeeded by
Bishop Luis del Rosario, D.D., S.J.
From 1938-1969 (31 yrs.), the care of the parish was entrusted to the PME Fathers
On the year 1939, St. Joseph the Husband of Mary Parish in Kingking, Pantukan was canonically
established.
Two years after, on the year 1941, St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Sta. Cruz was canonically
established making the entire province of Davao del Sur under its parochial jurisdiction.
On the year 1947, Christ the King Parish in Tagum was canonically established. Its parochial
jurisdiction covers the entire Davao del Norte including the present Compostela Valley Province.
On the year 1948, two parishes in Davao City were canonically established. These were the
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Calinan which was established on July 3, 1948; and Sto. Rosario
Parish in Toril, established on July 11, 1948.
On 17 December 1949, Davao became independent from the Diocese of Zamboanga. It became a
Prelature “Nullius” and Fr. Clovis Thibault became the Apostolic Administrator.
And, on the year 1955, Fr. Clovis Thibault was ordained bishop and became Prelate Ordinary of
Davao. On March 2, of the same year, Our Lady of Fatima Parish was canonically established.
On June 6, 1959, the Parish of the Our Lady of the Assumption was canonically established.
On January 1962, the political territory of Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental was separated
from the Prelature of Davao and was established as a Prelature Nullius with Rev. Fr. Joseph
Regan as its Apostolic Administrator.
And on July 11, 1966, the Prelature of Davao became a full-pledged Diocese with Bishop Clovis
Thibault, PME as the First Residential Bishop.
From 1969 up to the present, the Diocesan Clergy took over the care of the Local Church.
On 29 June 1970, the Diocese of Davao was elevated to the rank of an Archdiocese, and Bishop
Clovis Thibault became the First Archbishop.
And on the year 1972, then Bishop Mabutas became the Second Archbishop of Davao upon the
resignation of Archbishop Thibault.
On November 5, 1979, Diocese of Digos was established and Bishop Generoso Camiña became
its First Bishop.
The following year, that was, on October 11, 1980, Diocese of Tagum was established and
Bishop Pedro Dean Jr. became the First Bishop.
On February 16, 1984, Diocese of Mati was established under the administration of the Bishop
of Tagum. And on December 14, 1984, Bishop Alo was installed as First Bishop of Mati.
When Bishop Baquial died on March 1, 1993, Fr. Leonardo Dublan, Jr., one of the Parochial
Vicars of the Parish, was designated by Archbishop Mabutas to be the Acting Parish Priest.
On May 28, 1995, St. Francis of Assisi Parish was canonically established.
On June 1995, Fr. Roger Duhaylungsod was appointed as the Parish Administrator and
eventually became Parish Priest from June 1998 until May 2004.
On November 28, 1996, Most. Rev. Fernando R. Capalla, D.D. was installed as the 3 rd
Archbishop of Davao
On May 15, 1999, San Isidro Labrador Parish in Catalunan Grande was canonically established.
Then, on May 15, 2002, the Ascension of the Lord Parish in GSIS Matina was canonically
established.
On June 2004, Fr. Victor Isidoro G. Gilay was appointed by Archbishop Fernando R. Capalla,
D.D. as the Parish Administrator.
On May 26, 2006, Most Rev. George B. Rimando, D.D. was installed as Auxiliary Bishop of
Davao and became the Parish Priest until May 2011.
On February 11, 2012, Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles was appointed as the 4 th Archbishop of
Davao and was installed on May 22, 2012.
After the demise of Msgr. Vicente on April 26, 2020, Fr. Voltaire P. Dimol, was immediately
appointed by Archbishop Romulo Valles as the Parish Administrator.
