    Maryvale Afterschool Chess Club

    Maryvale Elementary School and the Maryvale PTA are pleased to announce the Maryvale Afterschool Chess Club. The club is designed for 20 students from grades 3 through 5 to learn and play chess for one hour after school on Mondays throughout the school year. A Richard Montgomery High School student, Fiona Lam, will be teaching chess and chess strategy to the club each week. Ms. Lam is the United States national chess champion for females in her age group. The club will be held in Mr. Millers classroom. Mr. Miller is a 3rd grade French Immersion teacher who enjoys chess and uses it to help teach strategic thinking. The program will also have several parent volunteers to supervise the program. The club meets every Monday afternoon from 3:30pm4:30pm. Students must be picked up at 4:30pm, no daycare is provided after 4:30pm. There is a one time application fee for joining the club of $5 to cover the county cost for the classroom. Only the first 20 students to apply will be allowed in the club, first come, first served. Only complete applications with cash or check for $5 attached will be considered.

    This program is open to Maryvale Elementary School students only, grade 35. Students must obey school and club rules. Students must be picked up no later than 4:31pm each club day. Two instances of late pick-ups may result in a student being removed from the club. The program sponsoring teacher, chess instructor, and the parent volunteers may remove any student from the club who does not follow school and club rules, is disruptive to other students or the club, or who does not demonstrate a desire to be in the club.
