A boy named Anthony encounters a snake named Snaky living inside the walls of his old school. Snaky listens to the classroom lessons from inside the holes in the walls and can now speak, having applied itself to learning over many years. Snaky protects the children from other dangerous snakes on the other side of the wall. THE STUDIOUS SNAKE

My school was very old, the walls of the playground had holes in where the roots of the big and old trees were droiven into them, Those huge trees could have hundred and hundred of years. All children in school played there every afternoon. I still remember what happened that day, because I was there. I was one of the pupils of the school, one day went to play as every day after school. Sometimes soe !ids were punished and had to stay in class when we were all outside. That day two of my best friends couldnt come to play; "eter and y cousin #ran!y$ We were a group of four, so %osh and I went out alone waiting for them to come out. My nae is Anthony by the way. We were sitting on a pile of the stones fallen from the holes of the wall taling about the punishment of our friends. !osh was saying how unfair was the teacher, "ust because they were taling a bit# Anthony$ %Im with you, Im tired of the apply your self thing& !osh$ %We "ust tal some times& Anthony$ %The teacher is a witch& And we both began to laugh$ Suddenly a &oice said' %The teacher really cares a(out all of you& !osh and I looed at each other$ Anthony$ %'ave you heard soeting(& !osh$ %A voice(& Anthony$ %A voice saying something about the teacher& !osh$ %)es, I have& We started to run far fro that place) once saved we looed at the stones, but nobody was there. *eter and +rany had finally finished their punishment and were coming with us. Anthony$ %!osh; don*t tell them anything about& +rany$ %,ets go there to play& - said pointing at the stones. !osh$ %.o, there is a strange &oice& +rany$ %What(, are you mad(& Anthony$ %I told you not to say anything/& +rany$ %Anything about what( come on, tell us& We told them the story and went bac to the stones place, sat in the same way than before and waited, but there was not voice at all.Then the school*s (ell sounded and we had to leave. The ne0t day we were very +uiet in class (ecause we all wanted to go out at (rea! tie, so none of us taled in class time. At brea time we went running to the place of the voice and sat there waiting. Anthony$ %1aybe we should say something about the teacher again& !osh$ %The teacher is a witch& 2ut there was no voices, so we began to shout$ %The teacher is a witch/& an the voice sounded again. %Some day you will repent of not letting the teacher teach you, then will be late, I have seen much more ids lie you during all these years&. *eter and +rany fleed frightened but we didnt. Anthony$ %Who are you( I cant see you& The voice$ %,oo up here inside the hole& When I looed couldnt believe what I was seeing; a (ig sna!e staring at e$ The snae$ %3ont be afraid, I* a student too& Anthony$ %What( I have never seen you in class& The snae$ %)es, I arrived here when I was too small, so Imagine how many years, that branch up there is my des from where I see your class and listen e&erything your teacher says%. Anthony$ 2ut how can you tal( The snae$ %I have been paying attention in class since I* here, I applied y self and now I can tal, and teach you maths, history, literature# and "ust because I pay attention in class& The bell sounded again and I had to go bac to class. Anthony$ I have to go, whats your name( The snae$ %I dont now..mmm, call e Sna!y, When I went to the classroom !osh had already told *eter and +rany about the snae. *eter$ %We should tell the teacher& Anthony$ %3ont /& +rany$ %2ut she can be dangerous/& Anthony$ %.o/ she is "ust trying to study/ Don*t you dare to say something/& The ne0t day I was very nice in class, wanted to see Snay at brea time, so I really paid attention) e&en the teacher congratulated ep. Then when te bell sounded I went out to see Snay, my cousin and my friends couldnt because had been taling about the snae during the whole class and were punished. Anthony$ %Snay/Snay/& Snay$ %Im coming/& Anthony$ %1y friends say you are dangerous& Snay laughed and said$ %I* not dangerous) actually I protect all of you, at the other side of the wall there are some dangerous snaes, but I dont let them cross the wall& Anthony$ %So, you protect us from them& Snay$ %Sure, they call me the wall guardian& Suddenly a group of children came and asing about the snae, and Snay hid inside the hole. Anthony$ %There is no snae& 4hild$ %I will tell the teacher/& I was there trying to conceal y e-pressions when the teacher came. Teacher$ %Anthony come here/, whats going on( something about a snae(& Anthony$ %It was .ust a .o!e& Teacher$ %5, but Im going to tal to the principal to mae sure this wall is reodeled and the trees are cut down/ I dont want anyone playing near here until then& I loo!ed for Sna!y during days) (ut I couldn*t find her$ 5ne day some men came to cut down the trees and other men sprayed the wall$ I ased one of them$ %Whatss that for(& %To ill the insects inside the wall& Anthony$ %6ven snaes(& %6verything& After a few wees I had assued that y friend Sna!y was dead) one day I was watching a foot(al atch of soe !ids fro y class, one of them scored a goal and I screamed$ %/oaaaaaal/& And suddenly I heard Sna!y saying$ %)es, nice goal&#.
