Macavity - The Mystery Cat

a poem by T S Eliot
Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw--
For he's the master criminal who can defy the aw!
He's the bafflement of Scotland "ard# the Flyin$ S%&ad's
despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not
there'
Macavity# Macavity# there's no on li(e Macavity#
He's bro(en every h&man law# he brea(s the law of
$ravity!
His powers of levitation wo&ld ma(e a fa(ir stare#
)nd when yo& reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not
there'
"o& may see( him in the basement# yo& may loo( &p in
the air--
*&t + tell yo& once and once a$ain# Macavity's not there'
Macavity's a $in$er cat# he's very tall and thin,
"o& wo&ld (now him if yo& saw him# for his eyes are
s&n(en in!
His brow is deeply lined with tho&$ht# his head is hi$hly
doomed,
His coat is d&sty from ne$lect# his whis(ers are
&ncombed!
He sways his head from side to side# with movements
li(e a sna(e,
)nd when yo& thin( he's half asleep# he's always wide
awa(e!
Macavity# Macavity# there's no one li(e Macavity#
For he's a fiend in feline shape# a monster of depravity!
"o& may meet him in a by-street# yo& may see him in the
s%&are--
*&t when a crime's discovered# then Macavity's not
there'
He's o&twardly respectable! -They say he cheats at
cards!.
)nd his footprints are not fo&nd in any file of Scotland
"ard's!
)nd when the larder's looted# or the /ewel-case is rifled#
0r when the mil( is missin$# or another Pe(e's been
stifled#
0r the $reenho&se $lass is bro(en# and the trellis past
repair--
)y# there's the wonder of the thin$' Macavity's not
there'
)nd when the Forei$n 0ffice finds a Treaty's $one
astray#
0r the )dmiralty lose some plans and drawin$s by the
way#
There may be a scap of paper in the hall or on the stair--
*&t it's &seless of investi$ate--Macavity's not there'
)nd when the loss has been disclosed# the Secret Service
say:
1+t m&st have been Macavity'1--b&t he's a mile away!
"o&'ll be s&re to find him restin$# or a-lic(in$ of his
th&mbs#
0r en$a$ed in doin$ complicated lon$ division s&ms!
Macavity# Macavity# there's no one li(e Macacity#
There never was a Cat of s&ch deceitf&lness and s&avity!
He always has an alibit# or one or two to spare:
)nd whatever time the deed too( place--M)C)2+T"
3)S4'T THE5E'
)nd they say that all the Cats whose wic(ed deeds are
widely (nown
-+ mi$ht mention M&n$o/errie# + mi$ht mention
6riddlebone.
)re nothin$ more than a$ents for the Cat who all the
time
7&st controls their operations: the 4apoleon of Crime'
