Title : JD(S)-Cong Bhai Bhai? No Ullu Banoing

In Bangalore, not a day passes without Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of Congress and Janata Dal
(Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy hurling abuses at each other over the government cancelling
selection of 362 candidates to Class I posts. But some 350 km away at Shikaripur in Shimoga district -
the hometown of BJP strongman B S Yeddyurappa -the two parties have joined hands to take on BJP for
the August 21 by-polls at Shikaripur.
Congress candidate HS Shanthaveerappa Gowda is fighting Yeddyurappa's son and BJP nominee BY
Raghavendra in the by-election.
Siddaramaiah and Pradesh Congress president G Parameshwara, who camped in the town for two days,
visited taluk JD(S) leader HT Balegar on Tuesday and, successfully ensured his party's support to the
Congress candidate. The Congress and the JD(S) will make a formal announcement about this on
Thursday, public works minister HC Mahadevappa told ET.
He said Madhu Bangarappa, JD(S) MLA from neighbouring Sorab and son of late chief minister S
Bangarappa, has also extended his support to the Congress candidate. Balegar joined us in the
campaigning to day (August 13), and Madhu will be joining us tomorrow (August 14), said
Mahadevappa who is leading the Congress campaigning in Shikaripur.
When contacted, Balegar confirmed that he and Bangarappa junior will be seeking votes in favour of
Gowda. We are supporting the Congress as we want to elect a secular leader. The arrange elect a
secular leader. The arrangement, however, is limited to Shikaripur, and these elections only, Balegar
said.
In last year's Assembly polls, Yeddyurappa, as a candidate of Karnataka Janata Paksha party that he had
formed, secured about half the votes polled, while Congress candidate Gowda and JD(S) candidate
Balegar polled 32% and 10%, respectively. Balegar has his own following in the taluk as he has led a
few movements on social issues. I am sure it will help the Congress, Mahadevappa said.
Shimoga-based analysts, however, said it will be a formidable challenge for the Congress to make
inroads into the loyal voter base Yeddyurappa has built in the district. If you go by the votes polled by
the BJP last year, I am not sure if the coming together of the Congress and JD(S) will significantly alter
the outcome of the polls, said Arun, a Shimoga-based political analyst. I don't know how much JD(S)
voters will listen to their leaders as the party is engaged in a bitter attack on the ruling Congress in
Bangalore, he added.
This is not the first time the Congress and JD(S) are coming together in Shimoga. In 2008, when the BJP
fielded Yeddyurappa from Shikaripur, projecting him as the CM candidate, the Congress and JD(S)
stayed away from the fray, and backed the late S Bangarappa, who had solid base in Shimoga district.
Yeddyurappa emerged the winner then.
Interestingly, the JD(S) and the BJP have swung toward each other more favourably in recent years.

In July this year, the JD(S) backtracked from a secret deal it had struck with the Congress for the ruling
party's support for its candidate in the election of deputy chairman of the legislative council and went
with the BJP. In 2006, too, the two parties had formed a coalition government, but parted later. They,
however, had a secret understanding ahead of this year's Lok Sabha polls as they had considered
Congress as the bigger enemy.
Bellary Rural in Bellary district, and Sadalaga in Belgaum district are also going to polls on August 21.
