Grade ESL Syllabus

Middle School ESL Department
Welcome to ESL! As your students ESL teacher we intend to develop and enhance his/her English language proficiency.
This means we help build his/her ability to process English through listening and reading and his/her ability to produce
English by speaking and writing in preparation for high school academics.

Class Description:
Learners will engage in the process of dissecting functions of the English language in order to communicate. Learning is
cultivated from concept-based curriculum, promoting inquiry through a constructivist design, with the intention of
nurturing a problem based learning environment. To promote insightful processing, learners will engage in multiple
modes of interaction with:
A. self
B. partner
C. small Group
D. whole Class
E. teacher
F. experts/Supports
G. text
H. multi-media

Expectations: Learning is a shared responsibility owned by the teacher, student and classmates. In order to help ensure a
successful learning environment, we follow these norms:
1. Act and behave in a manner that creates a positive learning environment.
2. Engage in discourse and assigned work in a manner that promotes a productive learning experience.
3. Share insightful opinions, develop critical thinking and articulate ideas clearly.
4. Consciously and continuously work for improvement.
5. Seek out feedback and help.


Grading Scale: Students will be scored using rubrics in each individual standard for ESL. The score put into the grade
book will range from 1 through 4.

*Each standard is evaluated by discourse level, sentence level and word/phrase level which will be distinguished on the
rubric used for grading.*
