Uses of Wired Remote Controlled Robots
and Their Pros and Cons
Wired remote controlled can be used in many applications. Some applications are given
below.
Maintenance robot : Can be used for repairs in tunnels, air vents.
Cleaning Robot : To do ordinary cleaning
Spy/ Mine detecting Robot : For advanced military applications
Advantages
By using a cable you get around the problem of heavy batteries. The robot can be powered by
an AC-outlet. Another benefit of a tether is the ability to easily use a PC to control the robot.
Disadvantages
Limited Range
Electric signals transferred over a wire lose energy because of the wires resistance.
The result is that the amplitude of the signal decreases as distance increases.
Reflections can be a problem when the data rate is high. This means a previous signal
doesn't disappear before the next is transmitted. This is why transmission lines are
"terminated" with a resistor to ground.
Interference is caused by the magnetic fields of other conductors or capacitive
coupling of high speed signals in other conductors. Shielding cables reduces
interference.

Mechanical Issues with Cables
Cables have fixed number of wires in them, if you need more, you'll have to replace
the whole cable, which can be very time consuming.
Cables have certain stiffness. The thicker the cable the more force you need to apply
to bend the cable.
Cables have a weight. This can make it hard for smaller robots to drag it around.
They can get in the way of the robot.

Why a Cleaning Robot ?
It is a direct practical application of wired remote controlled robots.
It is easy to make a cleaning robot when compared to a military robot or a
maintenance robot.
Can be made with a relatively little amount of money with the features needed.
A good solution for household \ office cleaning.

Procedure of Cleaning
We know that there are many forms of cleaning such as sweeping, vacuuming, washing,
blowing. Since this is an electrically powered product we do not intend to use this for wet
cleaning purposes. We have chosen the methods sweeping and vacuuming for this product.
So we intend to use rotating brooms and a vacuum unit in this product.

The rotating broom will be rotated using a motor and it will sweep the floor and the things
will be collected in a bag inside the cleaning unit. Then the vacuum unit will suck in all the
dust on the floor and will give a clean floor. We have not yet decided whether to buy the
vacuum unit or to make it ourselves using a high RPM motor a fan.

Locomotive System

The locomotive system of the robot is controlled by a remote controller. Two non-latch
DPDT switches are used to move and steer the robot. Circuit diagram of the locomotive
system is as follows.

The main objectives we had while designing this circuit were;
To have a method to manually ON/ OFF the robot, rotating brooms and the vacuum
unit.

Components used and their uses
Two 12V high torque 80 rpm motors to move the two wheels. This enables to move a
big load. Low power consumption.

Motors for rotating brushes and vacuum fan for cleaning purposes. Probably with a
very high RPM value.
Wheels + caster wheel to move and steer.

Battery pack to supply power (3000mAh Ni-MH) and a power pack to charge the
battery pack.

Wires for connections (flexible wires)
DPDT switches to control the movements of the robot.

Rotating Brooms

Normal switches to on /off vacuum and rotating brush.
MDF boards, water proof paper and Aluminium sheets to make the outer cover and
chassis of the robot.

Problems that we have
Designing the vacuum unit. (Whether to buy or produce the unit ourselves.)
Wires getting entangled. (We are thinking to enclose all the wires using a flexible
tube.
