Simple Sentences
A clause is a group of words that contains one subject and one verb. A sentence that
consists of one clause is called a simple sentence. Here are some examples.
1) The girls are playing baseball.
2) Sally found a good hiding place.
3) I am eating my breakfast.
4) Tom is wearing his new shoes today.
5) Will you help me?
6) The sky was very cloudy.
7) I can hear the birds.
8) Everyone was happy.
9) Is it raining again?
10) Natalie won the marbles tournament.
11) Bill and Edward signed up for the paper drive.
12) Your pen is like mine.
13) Kims coat is similar to mine.
14) Jacks coat is the same as mine.
15) Soccer balls are different from basketballs.
16) Green sea turtles live longer than elephants.
17) My grade on the test was worse than yours.
18) A monkey is more intelligent than a turtle.
19) Pedro speaks English more fluently than Ernesto.
20) Professor Brown teaches full-time.
21) Robert and Maria arent the same age.
22) A blue whale is larger than an elephant.
23) The exploding human population is the greatest threat to all forms of life on earth.
24) The Mongol Empire was the biggest land empire in the entire history of the world.
25) I work hard every day.
26) I live in an apartment with one of my friends.
27) We saw a pretty flower in the park.

Compound Sentences
A compound sentence contains two or more simple sentences joined by a comma and
and, but, or or. They can also be joined by a semicolon (;). Look at these examples. Notice
that there are two verbs, one on each side of the conjunction.
1) Some people are always happy and some people are always sad.
2) She opened the bag and took out a book.
3) Do you want coffee or would you prefer lemonade?
4) Is that a bird or is it a plane?
5) John is good at English but hes not very good at math.
6) Michael wants to see Star Wars but his friends have already seen it.
7) Tom dropped his sandwich so I gave him mine.
8) It started to rain so we went inside.
9) Jessicas cake won first prize, and Katherine won the sack race.
10) Jessicas cake won first prize; Katherine won the sack race.
11) The runners lined up and waited for the starting signal.
12) Mom is working in the garden and Dad is busy in the kitchen.
13) Sam is playing football and Eric is reading a book.
14) I switched on the TV, but there were no interesting programs on.
15) Maura phoned her friend Anna, but she wasnt at home.
16) Would you like to go to the movies or shall we go for a burger?
17) Hurry up or youll be late for school!
18) Dad not only washed the car, but he also polished it.
19) Sally not only baked the cake, but she decorated it as well.
20) John not only did his homework, but he cleaned his room, too.
21) They visited Sydney, as well as Hong Kong and Tokyo.
22) Sam ran faster than both Kim and David.
23) The movie was neither funny nor interesting.
24) You can do your homework either now or after dinner.
25) We could walk, or else take a taxi.
26) We can write Mandy a letter tonight, or we can call her tomorrow.

Complex Sentence
A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent
clause such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that,
who, or which.
1) When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page.
2) The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.
3) The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
4) After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.
5) I was reading when the storm began
6) I was working when he opened the door.
7) I was having a cup of coffee when he took my picture.
8) I was practicing my lesson when he arrived.
9) I was watching the baseball game when it began to rain.
10) I was listening to some music when the phone rang.
11) I dropped the book when I was drinking some tomato juice.
12) I found the pencil while I was moving the furniture.
13) It began to snow while I was working in the garden.
14) John came while I was writing a letter.
15) The taxi broke down when I was going to the airport.
16) Before he went to New York, Mr. Miller bought an umbrella.
17) After she finished her breakfast, she went to work.
18) Before he ate lunch, he wrote a letter to his parents.
19) After she ate lunch, she went to the museum.
20) Until it got dark, John and Paul played tennis.
21) After they heard the weather report, Mr. and Mrs. Smith left for California.
22) After it saw the cat, the dog made a lot of noise.
23) He went to class after he ate breakfast.
24) John was watching television when I began to write.
25) I dropped the book while I was walking to class.
26) It began to rain when John was fixing his bicycle.

Compound-Complex Sentence
Sentences with two or more principal clauses and one or more subordinate clauses are
called compound-complex sentences.
1) Go to the store and get some milk, as I must have your cake baked in time for the
party.
2) Snowboarding looks like fun, but it requires a lot of practice which is boring or
dangerous.
3) When you were renovating, did you hire contractors or did you do the work
yourself?
4) She types better than I do, but she has not written me for several months.
5) The library book that I liked so much was overdue, and I paid the fine when I got
some cash.
6) An old book is a new book until you have read it, and do not judge a book by its
cover.
7) Mary and John like their teacher a lot, and they especially like her when she
teaches art.
8) Although they used to be quite rare, wild turkeys are now common, and they are
everywhere.
9) Because I went to a private school, I can diagram sentences and I must say I quite
enjoy it.
10) Does Judith think she is a terrific dancer already, and is it true she plans to stop her
lessons?
11) During the era of steam locomotives, Canada built a railway across the continent.
12) Some people like action movies, but others prefer cartoons or sports shows.
13) My grandmother gives us milk and cookies when we visit her at her house.
14) Fighting is what some children do when they are bored, but Peter and Fred arent
like that.
15) Oh no! My cell phone is ringing, and at the same time so is my landline.
16) Choosing between chocolate clairs and banana splits is a dilemma to my children.
17) Dont tell me you didnt buy the things on the list, since I need them for your party.
18) Get your coat and put on your boots, as its cold and snowy tonight.
