Conference title, and a Class B district title, lost in regional semifinals
returnees - Senior Jenna Erway,
forward; senior guard Alayna Hess;
senior guard Emily MacLean; senior
forward/center Taylor Scheurer and
senior forward Lisa Metzger.
newcomers - Juniors Natalie
Appledorn, Gabby Hoaglund and
Nicole Kleinsorge; sophomores Kylie
Christensen, Hope Emington and
Mikayela Johns.
strengths - I think we will be a
good defensive team and our
quickness should be a factor, too.

We have some quick and athletic

girls that we need to be able to
use in the right way. We have some
athleticism under the boards, too,
with Kylie.
working on - We need to work on
our team chemistry and we need
to develop our system offensively.
We need to be able to limit our
turnovers, as well.
style - Offensively, we want to run
and push the ball to be able to take
advantage of the athleticism players we have. Defensively, it will be
man-to-man.
conference - Traverse City West will

be good and Traverse City Central

has a good young team. Gaylord
also should be good again. Our
conference is getting pretty tough.
goals - We want the girls to grow
as athletes, as members of the
community and be able to help
grow the game in Cadillac. On the
court, our successes will be in limiting our opponents points. We also
have goals of winning the Big North
Conference again and making a
run in the state tournament.
experience - Five seniors, three
juniors and three sophomores.

This year, because we do not have that

run a disciplined/patient half-court offensive.
goals - We will define success this year by
measuring our growth in the development
of individual basketball skills and improved
team performance from the way we perform in our first game to the way we play at
the end of the season. We will try to improve
on the 7-5 record of last years team. We
are a young team with only eight players.
It will be exciting to be able to watch their
growth as they learn and improve. I am
happy and excited to be back at the helm
of our basketball program after an eightyear retirement. My expectation is that we
will, like so many Heritage teams of the past,
be competitive with our opponents. The success that we have experienced in the past
is almost miraculous when you consider that
we usually have only 20 to 30 students in our
ninth through 12th grades.

strengths - We will be young, fast

not be tall, so we will need to beat
teams up the court. We must be
able to knock down shots and convert fast-break layups. We will work
hard and make our town proud.
working on - We lost 11 seniors
from last years team and only
have three returning players. We
have used this as an opportunity
to refocus and reshape our program exactly how we want it. We
will be building chemistry, installing our defensive philosophies and

will try to push the tempo and

make teams play at our pace.
But we also need to be able to
slow it down. This is probably our
best shooting team weve had in
a while. Also, look for us to mix in
different defenses to compensate
for our lack of size.
goals - Our goals are always to
compete at the highest level, every
game. The Highland Conference
is a tough conference to play in,
but we wouldnt have it any other
way. Conference and district
champs are always goals of ours.
Our success will be measured not
only with wins and losses, but also
with class, respect and work ethic.
When we step off the bus, we will
represent our program, our school
and our community. It is important
that we look and act professional
and provide a sense of pride for
our community.

record - 12-10.
working on - We will really be focusing on
returnees - Lucas Marion (Junior), 6-4 taking care of the basketball and limiting
(F/C); Kory Root (Senior), 6-4 (F/C); Bradley
Atkins (Senior), 5-10 (G).
newcomers - We have many juniors,
along with a few underclassmen, who
have tremendous potential to be contributors this season.
strengths - The staples in our program
are that no opponent can play harder
than we do, and that our players play
with tremendous mental and physical
toughness. If we project these staples on
both the offensive and defensive ends of
the court, then we will have a successful
season. Specifically, the strength of our
team should be our post play, with the
inside presence of Lucas Marion and Kory
Root.

the amount of turnovers we commit. We

must average a low amount of turnovers
per game to be successful this season.
style - Offensively, we like to run an uptempo style, push the ball up the floor quickly, and get as many fast break opportunities as possible. Defensively, we like to run
a pressure half-court man-to-man system
where we want to dictate what the offense
is able to do. We want our defense to be
the trademark of our program.
goals - Our goal is to win the conference championship and a district championship every season. We believe that
to develop a championship culture, you
must talk about and believe in winning
championships every year.

Coach: bill tisron

will also rely on our defense to hopefully turn into easy
record - 11 - 9
returnees - Laraiah Schichtel, Junior, Guard. Laraiah has offense. The girls have been working really hard in the
started every game since the start of her freshman year.
She averaged over nine points, three rebounds and three
steals a game last year. Hollie Eising, Senior, Guard. Hollie
has been on varsity since midway through her freshman
year. She will be counted on to be the main ball handler
this season. Kathleen Bradley, Senior, Center. Kathleen will
provide depth at the center position this season.
newcomers - Serenity Morgan, Junior, Guard. Serenity will be
the third starting guard and will see time at both the point and
wing. On JV last year, she led the team in scoring averaging
more than 13 points per game. Maggie Thom, Sophomore.
Center Maggie will be the starting center. Last year as a freshman on JV she averaged more than seven points and 10
rebounds a game. Emily Schultz, Junior, Forward. Emily will be
a starting forward. Emily does a great job bringing energy to
the team. She averaged more than eight points per game last
year on JV. Rebecca Young, Junior, Guard. Paige Crittenden,
Junior, Forward. Emma Wade, Junior, Center. Hailey Pylkas,
Sophomore, Guard. Karla Jensen, Senior, Forward (Foreign
Exchange Student from Denmark). Elsa Grisart Senior, Guard
(Foreign Exchange Student from Belgium).
strengths - I feel our biggest team strength will be
our guard play. Hollie, Laraiah and Serenity are all very
good at slashing to the hoop and drawing fouls. All of
our guards are very quick and work well together. We

early part of this season to become a very good team

defensively. We are not a very big team so we will have
to work extra hard and use our quickness to are advantage. We feel like the uglier the game, the better it will
be for us.
working on - As we progress to the start of the season we
will be working on getting accustomed to the speed of the
varsity game. We only have three girls with varsity basketball experience so there will be some adjusting to be done.
We have been making a conscious effort to play fast and
push the ball at all times.
style - We hope to mix and match defenses and keep
opposing teams guessing. We hope to play fast and turn
our defense into offense.
goals - Each year that I have been involved with the
program (JV Coach for 4 years) the varsity has shown
improvement. We would like to build on the success
that they had last year and get double-digit wins for the
second straight year. We are a very young team so I feel
we will be a better team at the end of the year then at
the beginning. Ultimately, I hope that we are hitting our
stride come tournaments and push toward earning our
first victory in districts in sometime.
experience - Four seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores.

strengths - Taking care of the ball,
the ability to stay in front of people

multiple scoring threats should be
our teams strengths if we continue
to improve each and every day.
working on - Our No. 1 goal heading into the season is to improve our
rebounding. This is an area that we
were very weak at last year and this
summer. The guys know if we want
to compete for a championship in

have a lot of players that lead by

senior guard; and Carmen
Gage, junior forward.
strengths - Its a little too
early to tell our strengths, but
we have the quickness to play
defense well, and the team is
very determined.
working on - We are working on
becoming better shooters, and
trying to be consistent in pushing the ball on offense. With
such a young team the main
thing is trying to do everything
at varsity speed.
style - I feel very comfortable in saying you will see a
team play with a high level
of energy when you watch us.
Defensively, we will change it
up often in order to try to combat the styles and skills of our
opponents, but no matter what
defensive set were running, it
will be aggressive. Offensively,
as always, closer to the basket

McBain will likely compete for

the top spot again. If there is a
sleeper, I would have to say it
would be NMC. Manton should
also have a good year and
Evart will be much improved. I
think there will be some competitive games this year.
goals - As always we want to
win all of our non-conference
games, a challenging task as
we begin against BRCCA. We
always want to be in the top
half of the conference standings and win a couple of
games that we probably arent
expected to win. Another goal
is to get a win in the district.
However, our true measure of
success will be, did we compete to the best of our ability
every time we stepped on the
floor, and did we put forth the
effort to get better every day?
If we can answer yes to those
questions, then we will have
had a successful season.
experience - Three seniors;
three juniors; three sophomores;
and a freshman.

capabilities.
Craig is a
record - 13-7
accomplishments - The Ramblers saw their conference very good
championship run of 12 years come to an end and will
look to get back on top this year.
returnees - The roster will have only 10 players this
year, but seven return with varsity experience. Cole
Powell (Junior) returns with the most experience as he
looks forward to his third year on varsity and second as
a starter after leading the Ramblers last year in scoring. Cole, 6 feet 3 inches, is a very athletic player who
brings three-point range, ability and the uncanny ability to get to the rim. However, he will be sidelined until
January with a strained MCL. Senior Tyler Sterk returns
for his senior season after starting last season and leading the Ramblers in rebounding. Tyler provides a lot
of versatility at 6 feet 3 inches and can play multiple
positions. Tyler has been a very good leader so far this
season in practice and is well respected by his teammates. Jordan Vanderhoef our other senior, has been
working extremely well too and providing leadership as
well this season. Jordan is also very athletic and capable of being a solid defender and contributor this year.
Junior Garett Gugle, 6 feet, should provide an offensive punch and solid defense as he looks to lead from
the point guard position this year. Junior Hunter Kitson,
6 feet 4 inches, is athletic and versatile, and capable
of playing big under the basket and stepping out to
shoot the three. Junior Ethan Eisenga at 6 feet 2 inches
is strong and smart. He has been working very hard on
playing in the post as well as shooting the three. Ethan
should provide us with a solid post defender because
of his strength. Junior Seth Barnette, 6 feet, brings experience from last season as one of five sophomores up
last season. He is very strong and he works very hard to
rebound and post up.
newcomers - Junior Jimmy Scheinder, 5 feet 11 inches,
brings valuable point guard experience off the J.V team.
Jimmy is a solid defender and shooter with a very high
basketball I.Q. Sophomore Logan Eling, 5 feet 11 inches,
is a very serious three point threat, excellent ballhandler
and solid defender. Last but not certainly not least is 6
foot 6 inch sophmore Craig Sterk who gives the Ramblers
good size inside in the post with very good hands.
Craig also handles the ball very well with deep range

basketball
player with
a
huge
upside.

strengths
- T e a m
strengths
should be
experience with seven
guys returning who saw varsity playing time last year.
Despite only ten players, the Ramblers are very athletic
with respectable size and athleticism.
working on - Going forward, the Ramblers are very
focused, hard working and committed to making this
a great season. Defense and rebounding will be at the
forefront everyday. Offensively, McBain has some very
athletic players and shooters and a solid bench. I look
for the Ramblers to use their athleticism.
style - After a disappointing 2013 - 2014 season and a
tough loss to Traverse City St. Francis in the districts, this
year McBain is focusing on playing tougher defense and
rebounding. Two traits that have been benchmarks of the
great Rambler teams in the past. Offensively the Ramblers
will look to push the ball up the floor and execute offensively.
conference - The Highland Conference will be
extremely tough this season. It starts with Beal City and
Pine River as the top two teams from last year are wellcoached and have key players returning. The Manton
Rangers are another team that has been building
under Ryan Hiller and is now a serious contender for the
conference championship. McBain Northern Michigan
Christian is my sleeper. They are well coached and
have solid senior leadership. Lake City, Evart and
Marion will be solid, especially at home.
goals - The goals are win the Highland conference
and make a serious run in the state tournament.
These goals will take care of themselves provided the
Ramblers continue to work hard and play as a team.
experience - Two seniors, six juniors and two sophomores

strengths - The 2014-15 McBain Ramblers will be
one of the strongest and fastest teams we have
seen in a while. We should be able to get up and
down the floor well.
working on - We have seven new players this
year. Our JV Coach Dan Verberkmoes does an
excellent job getting our underclassmen ready
for the next level. Our team needs time to get to
know each other and learn a few offensive sets.

proven year after year that he can coach the

game of basketball. Beal is Beal. Mantons coach
has improved his team each year under his realm.
They have good size this year, too. Lake City has
a lot of good athletes. Evart has a hungry coach
and he is giving the program some real long-term
vision. NMC has some real good young talented
players, coach Casey gets his kids to believe they
can play with anyone. Coach Miller and Marion
always have the never-die attitude that every
student athlete needs.
goals - Our goals are being set by the players this
year. They know that our practices need to be
tougher than our games. We have good leadership this year and we have some very talented
young players. Success will be defined in practice
and hopefully be carried over to the contest.

We will also be able to get out and run a little.
working on - We will be working on getting into a flow

leadership and that will help our younger players to
develop and find their roles on the team.
style - Our fans will come and see a group of girls who

conference - Beal, McBain, and Pine River are always
among the favorites, but I think the conference is starting to balance itself out a bit this year. I think there will
be some upsets this year or at the very least a lot more
competitive games. The top three may have a couple
of challenges this year.
goals - Our team goals will be defined by winning the
games we should win and not playing to the level of
a less-skilled opponent. Which is, of course, yet to be

defines what high school sports is about. A tournament
run would be nice but it wont define our season.

Guard; and Keirra Jusin(So) Center.
newcomers - Jenna Johnson(Jr) Guard;
Dana Hill(Jr) Forward; Anna Lindquist(So)
Forward; Hannah Hill(So) Forward; and
KayLee Goodman(Fr) Guard.
strengths - Unity and a desire to succeed
should be our strengths. We have the right
girls on this team with the type of parental
support you want. They all want each other
to succeed. I also feel like we have the makings of a good defensive team with quickness outside and size on the inside.
working on - The same things we try to be
good at every year. A lot of defense and
hustle on the boards with transition offense
being a key.

We will rely on some young girls who may

make mistakes at the beginning of the year.
But in the end will develop into very good
varsity players.
conference - McBain will be the favorite with
Beal City right there, as well. NMC, Manton
and Lake City all have good players returning as do Marion and Evart. I really feel like
there could be a lot of competitive games in
the conference this year.
goals - We have a very tough non-conference schedule this year so our wins may be
tough to come by early on. I do feel that if
we improve the way I think we can, we will
be competitive in the conference and in the
tournament at the end of the season.

returnees - We have three seniors this ing on a team back walkover.
year in Allie Peterson, Erin Millen and working on - our stunting is something
Mariah Curtis. Were very happy to have
all three girls. Theyre all so talented and
have a great attitude.
newcomers - We are happy to have five
new cheerleaders with Caitlyn Schepers,
Carrie Boon, Alivia Nelson, Josselynn
Wagner and Rachel Depew.
strengths - one of our team strengths
this year is going to be our tumbling.
Our two top tumblers are Hunter Fauble
and Alivia Nelson, both with back hand
springs and working on a back tuck and
lay out. For our round two, we are work-

we will be working very hard on since we

have some new flyers, bases and back
spots. Some of our new flyers are Mariah,
Caitlyn and Rachel. Josselynn is our new
back spot and Carrie is learning to be a
base. Our returning cheerleaders have
been more than willing to help offer
advice to the newcomers.
goals - our goal will be to beat our
old competition scores from last season
and improving our scores each time we
compete. I would like to see our scores
in the 600-700 range.
